Every now and then I manage to get awayfrom my laptop and get out of my room. Whenthis happens, I go to a coffee shop orrestaurant so that I can just hang withpeople. Then I remember why I’ve chosen asemi-hermitic lifestyle because, in the main, all I hear is moaning, complaining andwhining. On my best days I battle to keep myequilibrium without still having to contendwith negativity.Yes, I get that a good whineevery now and then to unburden oneselfprobably feels good as one vomits all thenegativity out of oneself. I’ve been prone toa pity part or two in my time. But, I’m not sureit is very helpful, though. It’s also futilebecause we seldom have power to changethe things we whine about: blackouts, abroken leadership, petrol price increases, theUSA’s stance on gay marriages, the economy,al-Bashir, the Guptas, Mugabe, Pistorius andthe neighbour’s dog. So, I understand thatgetting things off one’s chest is cathartic andprobably necessary from time-to-time. Butwhat I don’t get is when people who have somuch have so little gratitude.I’ve noticedthere’s a trend on FB (in my circles anyway)to ‘make of heaven a hell’. I have ‘friends’that will find the dark cloud in every silver
lining. You know the ones: They complainabout the bed that was too hard in their 5-star hotel in Paris, the wine that wasn’t chilledenough in their business class flight to theBahamas, the Internet connection is patchyin Perth, their flight was delayed in London,Sydney, Cancun or wherever, their lobster waslaborious in Mauritius.I’m not sure whatuniverse they come from? I think most of uswould love the opportunity to be able to flybusiness class or first class, to go to exoticplaces, to meet amazing people and to eat‘master chef’ quality food. I for one wouldn’tcare if my Internet connection is patchy, theservice is not entirely up to scratch and thefood is not always up to par. I would befocusing on the gift that I have. So when wewhine, let’s reflect on those folks that haveless than us (no matter our circumstances)and then maybe, just maybe we will realisewe already have more than is due to us andthat an attitude of gratitude is probably abetter choice than the one that some of ustake. For further information:Jacques de [email protected] 906 3693
Productivity (noun):The effectiveness ofproductive effort, especially in industry, asmeasured in terms of the rate of output perunit of input. synonyms: efficiency, production, productiveness, work rate, output, yield, capacity, productivecapacity. It’s no use you wake up everymorning, drag yourself out of bed, pitch upto work unmotivated, and spend the daytwiddling your toes. Wasting your time issuch an unhealthy habit that some (we won’tsay who) may call you a thief. A thief that’sstealing the company’s money by getting paidfor being a lazy bum. Each person in yourdepartment has the same amount time to do adifferent number of things. No, Sarah isn’tsuperhuman (or any other superhero for thatmatter). She just has more energy and is moremotivated than you.The trick is to muster theenergy to keep you on a high for longer.Working more hours means a big fat zerohollow egg if you don’t get things doneanyway. Here’s a secret: The best managersdon’t care how much time you spend at yourdesk, they just want quality results. Resultsresults results. And to get results, you mustproduce produce produce.Fun fact: Did youknow that produce is the root word forproductivity? Well now you know (insertgasps, wows, and mindblowing ‘boom badowboosh’ sounds.)So now that we’ve convincedyou, Mr Lazy Bum, that you need to stopthieving time, let’s get you to increase yourproductive juices and even put Super Sarahto shame:1. Find a balance between sleep, exercise andnutrition. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know it’llget your energy up. Actually it took scientiststo prove it. But it’s common knowledge now.So use your common knowledge and balanceyour life.2. Combat procrastination.Because later becomes one-minute-before-deadline. Or worse - never. Procrastinator maysound awesome, like Terminator orGovernator, but it’s not. Not even almost. Ifyou don’t know what to do, look up Nike’sslogan.3. Productivity and being busy are not thesame thing. It is possible to be busy doing nothing. SuperSarah already knows that working and gettingthings done are different. Get serious and askyourself: Is what I’m doing right now addingvalue to my job and growth? If you’ve beentyping all day e’ry day, but answered no…Honey, you’re doing it wrong!4. Plan your tasks.Simple: make a to-do list. Simpler: decide howmuch time each task needs. Simplest: Do ittop to bottom without distractions.5. Do the most important task first.Remember that simple to-do list you need tomake? Of course you do, just look 3 lines up.On your to-do list, put the most urgent, themost important and the one with the closestdeadline at the top. Duh!6. Time’s money so treat it as such.Have a clear understanding of the amount oftime a certain task will take to complete. Set astrict time limit to complete it. Oh look, wealready mentioned this. You may thereforededuce that this is an important point. Yes.Yes it is.(Bonus Tip: Googling ‘Set Timer’ is a real thing!)
7. Master the art of saying noIf the meeting doesn’t concern you don’t go.If a task can wait, add it to a future to-do list. You have to do your best to stick to the taskat hand and follow your to-do list. As youcan see, this to-do list thing really is important.8. Have a break.Have a Kit Kat if you must. Since you’re nota robot (we’re pretty sure you aren’t) yourmind needs to rest in order to refocus. Youcan do at least this one, right? I mean, howhard is it to just chill for a while? #chill #chilling#coffee #lunch #socialisingatwork #freedom#kitkatbreak9. Practice, practice, practice. There are no shortcuts in life. Work hard. Themore you do it, the easier it gets. If you don’tbelieve us, believe Gary Player: The harderyou work, the luckier you get.10. Add some pressure. We get it. Sometimes work is boring.Sometimes the tasks and deadlines are easyand you lose all oomph. And that sucks. Butyou can get your oomph back! All you haveto do is power-up: Add more tasks to yourlist, set personal goals, do a lot more than thebare minimum, and reach the deadlines withtime to spare.Working under pressureawakens a drive you never knew you had. You’ve got the power!Soon you’ll beproductive with your eyes closed (Disclaimer:Do not close your eyes while working. Thisis an idiom and is not to be taken literally.)11. Tune out.Put in your earphones (or headphones ifyou’re one of those people who says ear budsfeel like creepy crawlies) so that annoying-boring-story-telling-Sally doesn’t interruptyou, your thought process or your tightschedule. It’s okay to be selfish.12. Don’t rely on your memory.Take notes, always. Us humans suck atremembering stuff. Yes, even you. In fact, ifyou’re reading this, it’s probably especiallyyou. Write down everything. Or if you wantto be fancy and complicated, use yourphone’s voice recorder.13. Now get off Facebook. You already know this. Facebook wastes timethat you could be using for better blah blahblah…Do you think Superman wastes his timeon Facebook? No, because everyone will dieand the bad guys will get away. Metropoliswill literally fall to pieces (like a sad Gotham)if Superman couldn’t control that notificationicon and its red numbers. So get back towork! And that’s all you need to do.Congratulations, You’re now officiallycrowned Super Productive Man!We wish for all employers and employees tohave a productive week this week.TheEntrepreneurship programme will kick-off inAugust. For all of you that have entered, thank you. We will keep you posted as towhen exactly we will start.

VredePastoor Johan Venter.
