ADULT EDUCATION STATISTICS, 1968-69

December 1968

This report provides statistical information on adult education pro-

grams in school systems with enrollments of 6,000 or more. Data were ob-

tained from the questionnaire used in connection with the Research Divi-

sion's annual salary schedule studies. Of the 841 systems listed by

name in the detailed table attached, 714 reported adult education pro-

grams, and 127 reported that they had no adult education programs. Many

of the systems without adult education indicated that these types of

services are administered by community junior colleges and/or vocational-

technical schools.

The majority of systems that reported salary data for adult educa-

tion teachers compensate them on an hourly basis. In instances where a

range of rates WAS reported for a given system, only the minimum and max-

imum figures appear. Several systems pay adult education teachers a

specified percentage of the regular schedule for teachers. In these

cases, when possible, minimum and maximum hourly rates were computed on

the basis of the teachers' minimum and maximum scheduled salaries.

Three summary tdbles as well as a listing of the individual systems

are included in this report. Table 1 shows by enrollment groups, the

number of reporting systems with enrollments of 6,000 or more. Table 2

reports the enrollment and number of teachers in elementary and/or sec-

ondary school systems and in adult education programs. The total en-

rollment in reporting elementary and/or secondary school systems is

17,054,829; and in adult education classes, 1,305,681. Reporting ele-

mentary and/or secondary systems have a total of 702,600 classroom

teachers and 46,033 adult education teachers. Of tha adult education

teachers, 39,248 are part-time ceachers and 6,785 are full-time teachers.

Table 3 indicates the distribution of maximum hourly rates paid to adult

education teachers as well as means, medians, and ranges of the rates.

The median hourly rate for all reporting systems is $6.00; the mean,

$6.18. Hourly rates ranged from a low of $3.00 to a maximum of $25.00.

This report is not an all-inclusive study of adult education pro-

grams throughout the United States. The summary tables contain data

only on those systems in the individual listing.
