The purpose of the survey was to determine what machine-readabledata bases are accessed by Iibrarie's in.the State of WisCOnsin, andfurther, to as;ess librarian 51 pekeptiOn of what specific data basesthey deem important jn the, future operation of their library.,

A queStionnai,re was sent to a Wisconsin Division of Libraryrvices mailing list, that included public libraries, special librar-

ies, technical'institutes, school librariesland college and universitylibraries. The questionnaire consisted of'Amo parts: Part I, LocallyAccessible Data Baies and Part IL, Wisconsin's FutureNeeds. Part Iquestionnaire result4 were both clarified and supplemented by telephonewith the contact person listed on the returned questionnaires. Thispublication is the compilation of Pirt I information A copy of,thePart I questionnaire is appended. The' results of Part II will' bepublished late summer of 1975.

This publicationl is divided into three sections. The first givesa descriptibn,pf each data base accessed by a Wisconsin library. In-cluded ijhe desOiption is the name of the data base, the subjectcoverage, its availability, the year iebegan, frequency of update,and current size, the prAnted equivalent, the thesaurus used,sou'rcesiof informatioA co'rtained in.the data base, the ways in whichthe.datl base can be 'searched, and the person(s) to contact for addi-tional Information. If, the data base is available through more thanone institution, all institutions are listed. This,section is arrangedalphabetically by data base name.

Section two is an alphabetical listing of institutions accessingdata bases in Wisconsin. Section three'is a general subject index tothe data bases. These sections are cross referenced to the data basedescription section.

This edition of Part I of the s urvey represents an- initial attemptto identify locally' accessible data bases. Comments and suggestionson how to make this typefof docuMent,as useful as possible, as well .
