STRANGER IN PARADISE reflects on thepower relations between Europeansand refugees.
In a classroom in Sicily, just inside the
walls of Fortress Europe, recently arri-
ved refugees receive lessons from a
teacher (Valentijn Dhaenens) who has
some rather unbalanced traits. One
moment he mercilessly rejects the re-
fugees – the next, mollifyingly, he
embraces them. Operating at the inter-
section of documentary and fiction,
STRANGER IN PARADISE investigates the
power relations between Europe and
refugees.

The sea breaks its silence as it unveilsthe stories of our protagonists, whofind refuge in the sea in search of abetter place.
In HOW TO MEET A MERMAID the sea is a
haven for mankind, locked in its strug-
gle with its 'indifferent universe'. Prota-
gonists Lex, Rebecca and Miguel have
their own reasons to lay their lives in
the hands of the capricious waters.
Through their adventures, the film ex-
plores the obstacles in their lives and
those that transcend their personali-
ties: cruise-ship violence, suicide, and
illegal immigration. Do they find what
they so anxiously seek underneath the
surface of the waters?

teaches the children to read and write
in Dutch, but also helps them to learn
to solve problems together and to res-
pect one another. The children gain
skills and confidence. With many tou-

THE CLAIM follows the work of TheRestitutions Committee that investi-gates and advises on artworks withan unresolved war past.
The film shows how the Restitution
Committee handles two cases. We fol-
low these people, the investigators of
Nazi art thefts and are present at the
meetings of the committee. Can the
restitution of a painting stolen in WWII
relieve the trauma of Auschwitz? A
story about war that takes place in the
present, a story about a triangular re-
lationship between the Restitution
Committee, museums and the clai-
mants.

DAAN’S INHERITANCE is a retrospective‘coming of age’ film and an ode tofriendship.
Daan is used to stand in front of a ca-
mera. Growing up, it was his father’s
camera, world-renowned photograp-
her and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken.
Now it’s the camera of his best friend,
Joris Postema. Together with him
Daan tries to get control of his life by
confronting his father posthumously.
By means of photos, film footage and
meetings with family members and
friends, Daan tries to fathom what his
father has passed on to him and he
makes a surprising discovery.

Frans Timmermans, former Minister of
Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, is
appointed in 2014 by President Junc-
ker of the European Commission to
become his First Vice-President in
charge of better regulation and funda-
mental rights. But very soon he had to
deal with the refugee crisis, the Tur-
key-deal and the dreaded Brexit.
Rarely did a camera get so close to
the heart of Europe. The result is a
personal, at times funny and moving
film, in a politically extremely hectic
time.

Hongli is a Chinese sexologist who
meets women of all ages at her prac-
tice in Beijing. Although the stories are
wide-ranging, all her clients are strug-
gling with the expectations of society.
Beijing may look modern, but the tradi-
tional mores affecting women of all
ages and classes are very old-fa-
shioned.

The deliveries of a heating oil com-pany in Greece, show a society in cri-sis, struggling to stay warm. In aclimatic sense as well as in human re-lationships.
Tasos and his sister Evdokia run a
business selling heating oil to their fel-
low citizens in Thessaloniki. With the
crisis ever deepening, fewer and fewer
Greeks can afford to buy oil. As their
customers struggle to make ends
meet, Tasos and Evodkia struggle to
keep their business going. They face a
sharp dilemma: should they really re-
fuse oil to people who don’t have the
money, leaving them in the cold? How
warm or cold is a society when a deep
crisis forces everyone to fend for
themselves?

A boatmovie that takes you along anetwork of canals and rivers, fromthe Netherlands to Belgium and theMediterranean.
In PASSAGE one is taken on a trip on a
riverboat along a network of shipping
lanes from the Netherlands through
Belgium to the south of France.
The simultaneous projection of three
images submerges the viewer in a
world of ever changing movement and
time. PASSAGE shows the poetry of
what has been created by human
hands and what tends to be lost
through time and changing economic
and social structures. The trip on a
barge as a metaphor for the slipping of
time and the lingering changing Eu-
rope.

In a juvenile prison three young delin-quents are forced to reinvent themsel-ves under the preventive custody ofthe state.
We descend into the hidden world of
coerced re-education, tedious psycho-
therapy and the continuous possibility
of violent eruptions.
But at night alone in their cell, the ca-
mera changes hands, and the boys
take us into the bewildering maze of
their mind, where feelings of rage,
guilt and despair are alternated with
sudden moments of intimacy and free-
dom.

RADIO KOBANÎ tells the story of youngfemale reporter Dilovan during thefight against IS and the return todaily life in the Kurdish city of Ko-banî.
Dilovan, a 20 year old Kurdish woman,
sets up a radiostation in the devast-
ated town of Kobanî, Syria, during the
liberation fight against IS.
Dilovan interviews survivors, refugees
and fighters; her programs bring a
sense of belonging to the broken lives
of the listeners.
RADIO KOBANI is a bitter, yet intimate
and poetic tale of trauma's, hope and
love.

Through video footage shot by Broodhimself and moving reminiscencesfrom people who knew him well, welook back at the turbulent life of rockmusician and artist Herman Brood.
“When I do my suicide for you, I hope
you’ll miss me too,” Herman Brood
sang in “Rock ‘n’ Roll Junkie” – just
one of many announcements of his
own death Brood worked into his
songs. It’s a subject Brood, who jum-
ped off the roof of the Amsterdam Hil-
ton 15 years ago, often sang about. In
Unknown Brood, a whole range of pe-
ople look back on the rock and roller’s
turbulent life.Video footage shot by
Brood himself and never seen before
is intercut with a rich collection of ar-
chive material.

Dr. Sami, the vet of Palestine’s onlyzoo, wants international recognitionin order to improve his esta-blishment. But he will need the helpof the Israelis…
In the Palestinian village of Qalqilya,
surrounded mainly by Israeli wall, who
is the more constrained, the citizens or
the zoo animals? Many of the animals
were killed during the intifada and the
situation is extremely difficult, but Dr.
Sami, the zoo’s vet, is determined to
bring back life to the zoo in the form of
two new giraffes. However, the coun-
try’s grim political circumstances and
the incredible task of meeting Euro-
pean zoo standards can test even the
most resourceful of vets.

A film about the resilience of chil-dren. Through the eyes of children, wesee what it’s like to grow up in a refu-gee camp with little resources or pros-pects.
ZAATARI DJINN is an exceptionally inti-
mate film about the resilience of chil-
dren. In the middle of the Jordanian
desert a few tents were set up for a
couple of hundred Syrian refugees.
Then, quick as lightning, with improvi-
sed shacks and caravans arose Zaat-
ari, a new city that consists for 80
percent of children. Through the eyes
of four children, we get to see and feel
what it is like to grow up in this place,
with very little resources or prospects,
but with an enormous scope for
dreams.
