New User Orientation StudentGuide, Version 4.0, September1989, 182 pages

The Primer, Version 2.2,October 1988, 186 pages

Contains the information provided in SCD's NewUser Orientation Course. The guide is divided intofive sections that contain introductory informationabout using the IBM 4381 (IO) front-end computer;running basic Cray jobs using COS (CRAY OperatingSystem); accessing the Mass Storage System;processing graphics files; and using the Cray softwarelibraries. The guide is designed to be used inconjunction with The Primer and contains much ofthe same information, but in an abbreviated form. Itis cross-referenced with The Primer, so that users caneasily find additional information. The guidecontains many examples and hands-on practicesessions.

Introduces the computing equipment and peripheralresources available at NCAR and informs you howto access and use them. After reading this guide, youwill know how to use the data communicationssystem to access the IBM 4381 (IO) front-endcomputer, how to use the IBM 4381 (IO) computer tocreate a Cray job, and how to process a job on theCray computer using COS. Appendixes contain ahandy command reference list of IBM commandsand EXECs as well as Cray Job Control Language (JCL)and procedures.

CRAY COMPUTERS

Note: NCAR has two Cray computers, but as of thisprinting only the CRAY X-MP/48 running COS isavailable for production use.
