This is a "special event" collaboration between two of Australia's most respected acoustic instrumentalists, particularly in the Bluegrass area. Ian Simpson and John Kane played together for many years in the much awarded and much loved Flying Emus. Each have moved on to lengthy careers in music: Ian as a respected Producer and session player based in Perth who makes the occasional foray to the East to play with people as diverse as Paul Kelly and Australia All Over's Ian MacNamara and his old band the Sensitive New Age Cowpersons. He has worked with Slim Dusty, Keith Urban and US artists like Roland White and Byron Berline. John is a well respected music producer and screen composer these days working over the years with the likes of Judith Durham, Slim Dusty, Anne Kirkpatrick, Ted Egan, The Bushwackers, Jay Laga'aia and Georgie Parker; and composing music for programs as diverse as the ABC's Good Game to the 2008 Paralympics broadcast theme. He has toured with US artists David Bromberg, Vince Gill and Tony Trischka amongst others and even jammed in Byron Berline's music room with the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe.

The banjo album gives John and Ian a chance to return to what they both love. They explore a range of styles form hard driving bluegrass on well known tunes like Duellin Banjos and The Beverley Hillbillies in classic Guitar and banjo arrangement; to banjo duets on Appalachian tunes featuring John playing clawhammer style and Ian classic Scruggs style; through to Ragtime and classical music. All in all a great deal of fun with a few bad jokes for good measure.

Ian will be on a short visit from Perth to promote the Banjo album for ABC Music and John rarely ventures out his studio so this is a rare opportunity to see John and Ian perform what promises to be a relaxed and entertaining show.Cat and the Fiddle, Balmain Wednesday 22nd 8PM

40th Uranquinty Folk Festival

Come one, come all, for all are welcome at the 40th Uranquinty Folk Festival!!

Yes, it’s our 40th year! which is quite a milestone for a music festival, and we hope you will come along to help us celebrate.

Quinty is an inclusive folk festival that encourages participation, whether it be flying a kite on the oval, enjoying coffee with friends at the bakery, dinner concerts at the hall followed by a night of bush dancing, great campfire sessions that usually go into the wee hours, our famous poets breakfasts, music workshops, becoming a star for 10 minutes at a blackboard concert, the special kids’ program, or sitting back and enjoying the concerts —there’s something for everyone in the entertainment packed 40th Quinty Festival.

The new Quinty Community Hall, built just last year, will surprise and delight all who visit. It was sad to say bye bye to the old hall but our new one has modern amenities, a well-appointed kitchen, hot water on demand (but we will miss throwing firewood into the old boiler — we don’t think!). And we were thrilled to discover the new Hall has such marvellous acoustics that amplification isn’t necessary and last year we ran concerts acoustically, which our performers and audiences loved.

Acoustic concerts will now be a feature of the Quinty Festival.Music sessions have long been a much loved feature of Quinty. Writes festival

newcomer Col Pike “The campfire sessions at Quinty need to be experienced to be believed.—put a truckload of the best musicians and singers you will find anywhere around that campfire and let them get on with it. Sit down, relax and enjoy.

Participate or don’t, it doesn’t matter, nobody is out of place.”Quinty has a certain charm characterized by friendly folk who love music and

life and who welcome strangers into their midst without question or judgment. It is a most welcoming event for the whole family.

“The ’Quinty festival reminds us that there are still many decent people around. Families & friends who can enjoy a simple experience in a beautiful spot, where you make your own entertainment with like minded folk. Relaxing & rejuvenating ‘Quinty’ can revive your soul & your faith in humanity.” Danny Spooner, PatronLabour Day Long Weekend 1 to 4 October 2010.Ticket prices per person - Weekend $55 Concession $45; Day $30; Concerts and Dances $12Kids and camping free hot showersWhere? 12kms south of Wagga Wagga on the Olympic Hwy in southern NSW. Gulgong Folk FestivalDespite the story in the “Mudgee Guard-ian”, no volunteers for running The Gulgong Folk Festival have come for-ward, either in the local area or further afield. The festival has been held nearly every New Year for many years, and it’s a shame to see it fold. But it has burnt out several organisers over that time, and the supply seems to have run out, to the regret of many

Folk In The Foothills

Sunday, 17th October will see the 8th Illawarra Folk in the Foothills one day Festival. This now iconic event is held in the foothills of the Illawarra Escarpment at the beautiful Jamberoo Valley Lodge. It will again be the venue for a big day out for Folk enthusiasts when they gather in its magnificent ambience, to hear music and verse performed by a great array of renowned interstate and local performers.

Already those great satirists from Canberra’s, Shortis and Simpson have been booked. There will be real Celtic Music with local band Riogh while travelling up from Melbourne will be Bluegrass Band the Stetson Family. Funny man and poet, Jim Haynes will kick off the program in the morning with a poets breakfast, so folks should bring along their poems and ‘avago’

Bob Campbell from Gulgong will be presenting his radio program on Jimmy Governor as well as his own brand of Australiana in song, tune and verse. Victoria is further represented by the ‘Irish Nightingale’, Maria Forde and Shantyman, Vince Brophy. The tradition is not being neglected with Wongawilli and the ‘No such Thing’ band while the Wollongong Welsh Choir and the Tribal Jewels Belly Dancers and the Greek band Zorba’s Kefi will add a touch of the multicultural. Bowral House from the Highlands and the Wollongong Conservatorium World Music band will round off the program.

The Folk in the Foothills was the last performance in the Illawarra by Alistair Hulett before his untimely death. It is fitting therefore that a tribute concert is held for Alistair and this will be one of the day’s highlights.

Jamberoo is about a two hour drive from Sydney and Canberra. The Lodge is situated at the foot of the Illawarra escarpment on the Jamberoo Mountain Road.

Tickets will be limited and there will be no individual concert tickets. Ticket bookings 1300 887 034 or over the internet from www.illawarrafolkclub.org.au

folk news

dance newsThe Loaded Dog Turns 20! The Loaded Dog Folk Club turns 20 this year. The Dog had it's debut on Sat-urday 27th September 1990 at the An-nandale Neighbourhood Centre. Carole Garland and friends realised the upstairs hall with it's wonderful acoustics was the perfect place to establish a Folk Club with a heavy emphasis on singing, a tradition that still continues. Over the years under four managers (Carole, the late Richard Mills, Greg Bull and San-dra Nixon) the Club has booked the best local, intrastate, interstate and interna-tional folk acts, and the famous singing audience has supplied the harmonies. We're celebrating our birthday in the best possible Dog way, with a night of singing, with lots of chorus songs! Carole Garland, trad and evergreen singer, sometimes with concertina; the legendary John Dengate - singer, poet, songwriter, parody writer, busker; The Roaring Forties who have been singing shanties and other great chorus songs since they were an Ensemble of Fat Bearded Shantymen; Miguel Heatwole, man of a million songs and choir direc-tor extraordinaire; Gerry Myerson who is a mine of American folk songs; Kate Maclurcan (owner of a beautiful voice, champion of refugees), Bob and Marga-ret Fagan singing founders of a musical dynasty; and the wonderful Dog audi-ence who will add more harmonies! The Loaded Dog is Sydney's finest acoustic folk venue - showcasing the best acoustic folk music has to offer, from guitar to autoharp, solo voice to community choir. (No amplification!, no mikes!) Over the years the Dog has presented hundreds of acts - accompanied & unac-companied singers, bands, choirs, musi-cians, poets, storytellers, even dancers!

RFDS Contra DanceJohn Short reports on the Granville Contra in July: ‘There were 95 dancers (a great turn out) and, with donations, we will be sending a cheque to the Roy-al Flying Doctor Service for $1,603.16. I caught up with some of the dancers at Pennant Hills on [the following] Monday night and, without exception, they loved it.’ Next year’s contra for the Royal Flying Doctor Service will start earlier: 7-11pm.

Newcastle Contra DanceOn Saturday, 25th September, the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Folk Club will host Newcastle’s first Contra Dance, with Sydney’s resident contra dance band, Pastrami on Ryebuck, and Julie Bishop calling. If you haven’t tried contra before, you have a delight in store for you. It is the most fun, flowing, forgiving form of social dance you could imagine – all done at a brisk walk, and with a repeating pattern each time through. It will be held at the Wesley Church Hall, 150 Beaumont St, Hamilton, at 7.30pm, and admission will be $14, concession $12, NHVFC members $10, and under-16 free. Enq, Bill 4946 5602. There is a flyer at users.tpg.com.

Many Cornstalk readers will know Patricia from her folk activism over many years, most especially through the dance scene, her involvement in sessions - especially at the James Craig - and through her work as a volunteer at 2MBS-FM.

On 24th March this year, she was coming down some concrete stairs at 2MBS-FM - carefully as she is 75 and walks with a stick. However the railing she was holding on to came away from the wall and she fell heavily breaking a femur in her thigh. This was a calami-tous event but Patricia is a very resilient woman and was back home after about six weeks in the Royal North Shore Hospital.

Patricia spent four weeks at home with a walking frame, but she was in in-tense pain and her doctor found she had two cracked vertebra. Somewhat belat-edly, she was given a full body scan and it turned out that the femur in her other leg had also been broken in the fall.

Now in the Concord Repatriation Hospital, Patricia had to face more complications when she developed an infection from the second leg operation. She’s had a series of procedures to drain the infection in her leg and is now fitted with a vac pac that sucks out the nasties

And there’s more. The doctors dis-covered she has secondary cancer in the spine - not sure where the primary site of the cancer was - probably the breast.

Patricia will be moving to the Rehabilitation section of Concord - far preferable to the hostel accommodation that had been contemplated.

Patricia also said how much she ap-preciates the phone calls and cards she has received and the support she’s had since her accident.

I would urge anyone who hasn’t been in touch to make contact - and you know Patricia: she doesn’t like people to paint rosy pictures when the reality is plainly not auspicious. Keep it honest and light-hearted and tell her what’s happening in your life. - Margaret Walters.

Twenty Five Years On The sudden death of Declan Affley,

inspirational singer and musician on 27th June, 1985, at the age of 45, shocked everyone who knew and admired him.

It is now 25 years since Declan’s death and, for some, his loss is still keenly felt. We are holding a concert on Saturday afternoon 11th September at the Gaelic Club to celebrate this “rake and rambling man”. There will be contributions from a dozen of his friends and family - see the display ad for details - and an opportunity after the formal concert for everyone who’s interested to participate in a session which will continue on until late.

Declan was involved with music from an early age and was well known nationally for his singing, his deep resonant voice, subtle guitar accompaniments based on an appreciation of the Irish Harp, and for his witty, pithy commentaries between songs. Interested in a wide variety of musical styles, he was ardent about Irish traditional music, and also sang songs of the British Isles, Australia and New Zealand. His extensive repertoire included songs by contemporary songwriters such as Don Henderson, Harry Robertson and John Dengate.

Declan was born in Cardiff, South Wales, 8th September, 1939, to an Irish/Welsh Catholic working class family. Some of his earliest memories were of his dad playing Scottish pipes at St. Patrick’s Day marches and attending Irish Ceilidhs and Declan learnt many songs from him including “Crushkeen Lan”.

After completing his Leaving Certificate, he joined the Welsh Merchant Navy at the age of 16. He rose to the rank of Second Mate before jumping ship and coming to live in Australia in 1959. Based in Sydney, he worked for several years on east coast ships as an AB (able bodied seaman). When on shore leave, he sang in “low dives and pubs” including “Push” pubs the Royal George, Sydney and Tattersalls, Melbourne. Irish rebel and other folksongs were sung with enthusiasm in these pubs and this is where he met singers Brian Mooney, Paul Marks, Don Ayrton and Martin Wyndham-Read.

Declan became a regular performer at Sydney’s Troubadour Coffee Lounge,

Edgecliff, and later Traynor’s Folk Club, Melbourne, and was a frequent guest at Sydney and Melbourne folk venues, and a familiar face at national and local folk festivals. He also toured Indonesia, New Guinea and New Zealand.

Declan is probably best remembered for his rendition of Irish folk song “Carrickfergus”, although he also had special affinity with songs such as “An Bunnan Bui – The Yellow Bittern” and “Do you think that I do not know?”, a Henry Lawson poem, set to music by Chris Kempster. As well as guitar, Declan played tin whistle, banjo and fiddle; he later took up the uileann pipes which became his passion.

In 1972 he toured Ireland with Peter O’Shaughnessy and Marion Henderson in The Restless Years, a dramatic production of Australian history illustrated by stories, poems and folksongs based on the 1966 award winning ABC TV program, which he also sang and played in.

As well as involvement in radio programs such as The Australian Legend and Write it Down for Me and TV programs, Declan appeared in several films including Peter Weir’s The Last Wave, and Richard Lowenstein’s Strikebound, where he was musical director as well as having an acting role and singing songs such as “The blackleg miner”.

Declan started the group “The Wild Colonial Boys” in Melbourne in 1969, which combined Irish and Australian music. Band members, including Declan, appeared in Tony Richardson’s Ned Kelly film.

Scorning pretension and bullshit, Declan was modest about his achievements, and never sought fame or money for his music. He was happy to share his musical skills and had the rare ability to enthuse others. He gave generously of his time and skills to causes he believed in.

In 1984/85 Declan taught fiddle and banjo at the Eora Centre, an Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Redfern, Sydney.

Warnings and censorship for performing political/satirical songs merely reinforced his commitment to singing these songs in public. He understood the power of song and wrote: “Nowadays the laws of slander

and libel protect the culpable against the written word, but beware of the song. Somebody’s singing somewhere and people are starting to listen again.”Colleen Z Burke

Declan is survived by his wife, Colleen Burke; his daughter Bridie Burke and son, Paddy Affley and remembered in National awards presented at National Folk Festivals: the Declan Affley Songwriting Award and the Declan Affley Youth Encouragement Award.

Folk TraxThe good thing about September

is that winter has finished and spring is here. That means the festival season is not far away either. At Folk Trax we celebrate this with a few new items online.

Peter Hicks joined us with “ The day the market died” A great CD to take with you and listen to what Peter has to say. Also new online is Tiffany Eckhardt with Dave Steel. “Sunday” should never be too far away from your CD player. Another great effort from this pair.

Local Adelaide band “Creole Cowboyz “ want you to “Get Up & Dance”. If you’re not a fan of Cajun music yet have a listen to this one, it’s a whole lot of fun. All locally written titles, Australian at its best.

Bernard Bolan’s “The quirky works of Bernard Bolan” is one of the bestsellers. Supply however is getting short so be quick if you like Bernard Bolan and with our 10% discount to Folk Federation, Folk Alliance members and readers of the “Folk Rag” you’re getting real value.

We always happy to receive new CDs for Folk Trax. If you would like consignment information just email us at [email protected] I will send it to you.Henk and Jan de Weerd

Is Forbes and the Lachlan region of NSW the Folklore Centre of Australia? Let me put my case to you.

Buried within 25 metres of each other in the Forbes cemetery are the remains of two of Australia’s best known bushranger dynasties, Ben Hall and Kate Kelly, the (in)famous sister of Ned. Not buried however are the songs, poems and stories of these people along with the other well known bushrangers Frank Gardiner, Johnny Gilbert and of course the legend, stories and songs of the famous Escort Gold Robbery, the richest robbery in Australian history. The Ben Hall et al bushranger ballads are recognised as among the best in our folk song tradition. ‘The Streets of Forbes’ is probably Australia’s best known and most sung bushranger ballad.

The cause of all this bushranging activity, of course, was the rich Lachlan (Forbes) diggings and here again we have a large number of songs, yarns and poems reflecting on this 1860’s era. Thankfully many of these have been preserved in our National Library of Australia (NLA), Folklore collection.

After the gold petered out, although it is rumoured there is still a lot left, agricultural enterprise took over. The songs of shearers, drovers, and women and men on the land that mention the Lachlan are numerous, what bush band worth its salt has not performed ‘The Lachlan Tigers’.

Poets, sure, we can quote the works of Will Ogilvie, Breaker Morant who both lived and worked in the region and Henry Lawson, whose birth was

registered in Forbes.

Traditional music and dance – the regional, collected tunes of Harry Schaefer, Colin Charlton, Dave Mathias, Ebb Wren and others are played by musicians Australia wide and there is also a strong regional

dance content that has been recorded. Thankfully these tunes, stories and

dances are also preserved in the NLA collection.

I rest my case. For the last couple of years the

local Council have supported a Festival on the NSW October long weekend to acknowledge Ben’s presence and recognise the area’s folklore contribution. This year we are adding a strong music, performance and dance component. We have many well known ‘folkies’ coming along to share their talents including Collector, Chloe and Jason Roweth, Emu Creek/Gay Charmers band Christina Mimmocchi and Chris Wheeler, Al Musgrove, The Goldfields Brass Band (Richard Evans et al – can’t wait to hear them!), Greg O’Leary, Wongawilli Dancers, Canberra Bush Dance Display Group, Sydney Irish Ceili and more !

Our concept is to get back to the old style Festival and gathering where EVERYONE is involved, be they spectator, singer, poet, dancer or musician – a real sense of community.

The Festival will be centred around the historic Forbes Town Square which consists of Victoria Park, the beautiful (1899) Town Hall which is the venue for dance and concert and the Vandenberg Hotel with its wide verandahs. So everything will be in the one place.

Jason and Chloe are organising the Sunday program, which has not been finalised, but definite events are.Ongoing performances in the park

over the weekend with the opportunity

for musicians and performers to play acoustically. Dancers are also welcome to join in.Dance displays, workshops and

dancesAn Oldtime Dance in the Town

Hall on Saturday night with the theme ‘Dances of the Goldfields – THEN and NOW. This aspect of the festival is in the capable hand of Peter Ellis and will be supported by a local dance couple Ross and Elvy Quirk who will handle the NOW component. Band for the night will be a combination of Emu Creek/Gay Charmers and many friends.A Goldfields Music Hall on

Sunday night – goodness knows what will happen with all the people we have here. Singing dancing and everything in between!A continuous session area in the

Vandenberg hotel for musicians, singers and dancers. Those verandahs are a great spot for a tune as well.Craft, food, displays, holdups,

bushranger tours, busking all over the weekend.

The best part is the cost – NOTHING for all the open air events and only a few dollars to get into the Dance and Music Hall. Not often you get this value.

Country folk are friendly and as a lifelong resident of Forbes I know that it is a fact and, yes, I am biased. We are pretty laid back here and this will be the theme of our gathering. Sure, there are organised parts of the program, if you want to be organised, but the opportunity is there to make your own fun, as it was in the old days.

Please contact Rob Willis 02 68512687 [email protected] or Chloe Roweth for further information on the Forbes Ben Hall Festival 1st to 4th October 2010

The Tin Shed Rattlers One for the Road’Does it sometimes seem to our readers that most ‘bush’ bands are based in the cities? Meet the Tin Shed Rattlers, currently an 8-member band who are based loosely around south west-ern NSW, from Wagga to Narrandera to Griffith to Grong Grong. (And I thought I had troubles organising rehearsals!) The original line up of this band came together in 1971 and I believe they’re up to about 40 players through the band thus far, with one original member, Noel Raynes, still going strong. Here is a band that takes music and dancing (and a few laughs to I would guess) to where people need it - rustic country halls in drought-ridden regions of the state. Their cd reveals that they know a thing or two about entertaining as well as making music and I’d venture to suggest to festival organisers that this band might be a popular choice at the right folk festival. ‘One for the Road’ introduces a competent, cheerful group of musicians who have recorded a mix of generally well known Australian, British, Irish and American songs and tunes just as they would play them to a live audience. There are not too many notes or credits on the album but I suspect there are one or two original songs tucked in with the better known numbers, and they blend in very well too.

While this group has many features typical of an unpreten-tious and ‘useful’ bush band and dance band, it also has some special features that must endear it to its audiences. The band includes as its youngest and newest member a tuneful uillean piper, Mark Williamson, as well as 4 convincing lead sing-ers and a couple of backing vocalists. Melody instruments include fiddle, whistle, pipes, mandolin, banjo and harmonica - more than enough to maintain interest and variety of sound while the rhythm section of guitar, bass and light percussion is effective, generally understated and well suited to the styles of music they play. Bruce has a rare talent . . . the best songwriter I have seen in a long time! (Eric Bogle)That was absolutely f…ing brilliant! (Derek Guille, ABC Radio Melbourne) Bruce Watson is a wordsmith, a teller of tales, a spinner of yarns. He is a contemporary songwriter with lots of stories he tells with passion and integrity. An Australian folk hero!He rocked the festival with a series of hysterically funny songs + heartwrenching songs.

Trevor Swadling & Harry Dingle are two magnificently well kept secrets of original Australian music. Both poetic & philosophical in their musings on life, love, beauty and the world around them, their music is at once imaginative and extremely moving. For the first time, they come together with their respective bands, Selalu and The Dingle Brothers for a shared bill that will have the walls of Humph Hall come alive with song!
