Welcome to our spring/summer issue! I love spring – the lethargy of Christmas long forgotten, lighter evenings and the promise of summer just around the corner. And, of course, with summer comes lovely outdoor weddings. Boho dresses, barefoot ceremonies, Pimm’s, picnics and hay bales... The smell of BBQs and hog roasts wafting in the breeze, street food style vendors serving your evening food – paella or wood-fire pizza perhaps? And, if you’re having a festival style wedding with a spot of glamping, how about morning coffee and porridge served from an old VW camper van? If that sounds like the kind of wedding you’re planning, I pray the great British weather will be on your side. On page 54 we discuss just that – the weather. Are you brave enough to risk it?
Whatever style wedding you’re having – summer or winter – you’ll find some lovely ideas and fantastic suppliers within this magazine.
I’m delighted with the colourful styled shoot on page 50. I organised the shoot and had lots of fun on the day. Manoeuvring the giant macaron towers was terrifying but wow, they’re showstoppers (and they’re alcoholic!).
I also worked on the ‘Working in Weddingland...’ photo shoot on page 42 in association with The Nostalgic Wedding Fair. We wanted to capture the people behind the products; the suppliers who work so hard to bring together all the elements for your big day. They’re fun, creative, crazy and often sleep deprived...

LOVE EmilyGone is the woeful wedding breakfast of frozen prawn cocktail followed by chicken breast with texture akin to the sole of your right trainer. Phew! But what now?
Well, like everything else in your mounting pile of wedmin, there’s a lot to choose from and consider, but there’s an upside: it’s FOOD so you get to TASTE it all.(Don’t give me any of that wedding diet crap, I don’t wanna hear it.)
Now, whilst you’re out there stuffing your faces, there’s a few important things to consider:Dietary requirements (all your guests are bloody difficult). Alcohol consumption vs. food consumption ratio (i.e drunk guests. Have you seen the video of the drunk bridesmaid who dances round the central tent pole resulting in total wedding marquee collapse? It’s funny).Tiny tummies need filling fast (hungry children = angry children).
I suggest these points lead to one outcome. You can forget the whole ‘one big sit-down meal’ thing. All your guests want something different, hunger peaks at different times, people are drinking, children are getting hungrier and angrier as we speak. So, let’s break this down, give full tummy control to the guests, get some variety, and spread it out.
Picnic – (My friends did this recently, it was perfect.) Big wooden crates, hampers, or baskets on tables filled with little boxes and brown parcels of meat, cheese, fruit, salad, anything at all you want to stuff in there; keep it varied to satisfy those bloody difficult guests of yours.Hearty British grub – Lots of courses of simple, hearty foods; mugs of soup followed by trays of hot or cold pies (savoury then sweet), cheeses on crackers and then grapes.Food vans & buffets – Food vans are uber popular now, and they’re great fun, choose anything from ice creams to fish and chips.Lots of cakes – A desert table or different kinds of wedding cakes on a table is a mouth-watering sight to behold, and inexpensive if you have baking friends. Add a tiered cheesecake, cupcake cake, naked cake with berries and some of your favourite desserts to please everyone.
Whatever you choose, make sure you love it, have fun with it, and you keep it coming. Lots of courses mean full, happy tummies and guarantees the fussy eaters will find something they like, even if they skip a couple of courses.

#WEDDINGREVOLUTION Our friends at Chosen Wedding Fair have taken it upon themselves to shake up the wedding industry and showcase what is really ‘now’ and fun. Created in 2012 (by a frustrated bride-to-be) they know how many creative and innovative vendors there are out there. DUBLÉ BUBLÉI met singer, Johnny Zero at one of Belle’s Events wedding fairs a few years ago. We both religiously traipse the Sussex wedding fair circuit and we became friends. Johnny has sung at all three Doily Days parties and I’ve supported events he’s organised.
I met the enchanting Curtis Skinner, again via Belle’s Events, a couple of years later. He’s a cheeky chappie with the voice of an angel and I always look forward to a bit of flirtatious banter whenever we’re at the same events. Curtis performed at our issue 3 party at the Funfair Club in Brighton.

Queen BeesRemember what it was like being a kid in a sweet shop? All the choice! The pretty colours! Well for Hampshire based Allison of Queen Bees, every day is like being in Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. She makes colourful macarons for wedding favours and special events (you can even order a box online to be sent out by post). The company are constantly developing their flavour and colour combinations. Flavours currently include lemon, raspberry, rosewater and pistachio... YUM! If you have ideas for unique sweet/cake based wedding favours, make sure you contact Queen Bees, they love working on bespoke orders (we love their delicate and colourful meringue kisses).
Queen Bees also make retro sweet cones, sweet trees and edible buttonholes and bouquets (great for child bridesmaids).

On your wedding day you’re likely to get some of the best photos ever! You’ve got a professional photographer, you’re dressed to the nines, hair and make-up professionally done. So you need some way of displaying your favourite photos of the day.
How about turning them into funky wood prints? A photo printed on wood looks really amazing, especially on reclaimed wood. The image blends with the natural background and it
shows the wood grain, knots and imperfections through the photo.
Antoinette Hoogstrate only uses recycled scaffolding; it gives the photo a rough look but with a subtle vintage feel, like a painting.
Your favourite wedding photo will be printed onto the wood with a slight distressed look. The chunky wood is sanded and the edges have a slight round finish. The whole piece is finished with matt clear varnish and delivered ready to hang (although the piece is thick enough to stand on its own).

1. GuestsForget family politics. Only invite people you REALLY want to be there. If that’s nobody, then nobody it is!
2. VenueThink about what you really love and what represents you as a couple. If you want to get married in a treehouse, tie the knot in a shark aquarium or say your vows during a freefall skydive then why the hell not? No one says you must get married in a church and have the party in a nearby hotel.
3. Clothes and shoesBridal shops will charge you several thousands of pounds for a heavy diamante-covered monstrosity you’ll only wear once. Why not check out Topshop or any other high street shop? They have dresses
perfect for a relaxed, informal wedding, will be a fraction of the price and will probably make you look super hot instead of like a big meringue. As for shoes, your first port of call could be Irregular Choice (I love that shop). If that doesn’t float your boat, buy a pair of shoes you like the shape of, paint them and pimp them with anything from buttons to sweets to Lego men.
4. ThemeTheme your wedding around something you really love. It could be anything from your favourite book or movie, a location, an era, a holiday such as Halloween, or even a hobby, like sailing or knitting. Consider asking your guests to dress to the theme. Having a theme gives you a really good starting point when it comes to organising the details of the day.
5. FlowersInstead of flowers, make a bouquet out of your favourite book, comic or music sheets. The paper bouquet featured here is made from Doctor Who comics with a Sonic Screwdriver handle!
6. FoodIf sit-down dinners and table plans bring you out in a cold sweat, why not throw some blankets down on the grass (in summer!) and have a picnic or a BBQ? Or have one long table where your guests choose where to sit. Other ideas include hay bales, a serve-yourself platter on the tables and hog roasts.
7. DetailsPinterest has a lot to answer for when it comes to driving you crazy with ideas for details. So why not assign your wedding party the task of making or

collecting things to decorate the venue with, and ask other guests to bring a small dessert. That’s decorations and cake sorted out without lifting a finger! As for personal details, why not create a photo line – it’s conversation fodder for your guests and you can hang it up at home after the wedding.
8. TransportIf your venue is within walking distance of the ceremony location, put on some flat shoes and lead a convoy on foot! If it’s a bit further, how about a beer bike, tuk tuk or motorbike? If you want to save on your transport, try looking up local vintage car enthusiasts and see if anyone wants to show off their car by driving you to your wedding.
9. GuestbookAlternative ideas include a video guestbook, a dictionary that your
guests use by looking up a word they think describes you and writing a message next to it, or a Polaroid guestbook; put out some props and a Polaroid camera so your guests can take instant snaps of each other, stick it in the book and write a message next to it.
10. TimingsYou don’t have to follow the conventions of ceremony at 2pm, followed by canapés, hanging about making small talk, dinner at 5pm, cut cake at 6.30pm, band sets up at 7pm and party till midnight. If you’re a morning person, drag your mates out of bed for a morning wedding and spend the afternoon doing a fun activity such as surfing or paintballing; if you’re a night owl, have a sunset ceremony – the Roman Baths in Bath do both sunrise and sunset ceremonies – I’m shooting a sunset wedding there next year, so watch this space!
Remember the ultimate key to holding an alternative wedding: if you don’t like it or don’t know why people do it, then don’t do it! Things like cutting the cake, first dance, throwing the bouquet. They’re all fine but if you don’t feel like doing them, listen to your heart and spend more time chatting, laughing and larking about.

DIY Brides Wedding Cake BuntingA quick tutorial by Make, Do & Trend
You will need: a small piece of fabric for bunting, complimenting twine, fabric scissors, 2x lollipop sticks, fabric glue, ruler
Step 1 – Cut your fabric into diamond shapes with a 4cm middle, you will need five flags in total.
Step 2 – Tie some twine to the top of one of the lollipop sticks.
Step 3 – Place a small amount of fabric glue on the bottom triangle of your first flag, trapping the twine, before folding the top triangle to meet the bottom.
Step 4 – Repeat step 3 until you have attached all of your flags, making sure to leave a small equal gap between each one.
Step 5 – Attach the end of the twine to the top of the other lollipop stick and trim the ends.
Step 6 – Your cake bunting is finished and ready to place on top of your wedding cake!

She wanted to offer handmade wedding workshops for other brides to learn how to make their own decorations and add DIY personal touches to their special day. In these workshops, brides come along and learn how to make decorations and share ideas with other brides whilst spending girly-time with friends or family. The Colour of
MagicScarlet & Matthew from the South Coast spent three years searching for a wedding venue before discovering The Meeting House at Sussex University. Designed by Sir Basil Spence in 1966, the striking coloured windows of the circular chapel inspired the theme for their special day.

Colourful rosettes, complete with love song lyrics, were attached to an oak tree outside for our guests to choose from.
I designed the feather cape and a friend made it for me.
We made a mix CD and gave one to every guest. It lasted exactly 1 hour,11 minutes and 1 second signifying that we were now “as one”. Twenty-three songs of faith, hope and love in celebration of our marriage.

Hilary Channing is a wedding celebrant, she designs and conducts bespoke ceremonies that reflect your ideas, lifestyle and personalities. For a civil wedding/partnership to be recognised in law, the legal part can be short and basic. It must take place in front of two witnesses and a registrar at an approved venue. It can be done before the day of your ceremony and the rest of the service can be celebrated at any location. You may choose to have the ceremony outside in a natural location, you can write you own intimate vows and choose readings and songs that are meaningful for you.
Hilary can help you incorporate different cultures and beliefs, and include symbolic elements such as hand fasting, rose and candle ceremonies.

Hello Adam! We love Crumble Catering. Can you give us some information regarding your background and experience?
My passion for food started when I worked in my local Farm Shop in Milford, Surrey. They grew a lot of their own produce and I took an interest in the farming side too. Alongside the shop, I worked for a catering company in Godalming, first of all front-of-house and then I began to work in the kitchen, helping to prepare and cook the food.
When was Crumble Catering born?
I decided to follow my dreams and start my own business so I launched Crumble in 2012. It took ages to decide on the name, I wanted to produce decent, home-cooked food, the sort grandma used to make. ‘Crumble’ felt perfect.
What kind of menus do you provide?
Anything from afternoon teas to formal sit-down meals. I
provide quite a lot of ‘sharing’ menus. For me, there is nothing better than a huge pot of beef bourguignon or a chicken tagine to dive into. Food is very sociable and I love seeing guests tuck into their meals, sharing around the table. I’m very much in to Moroccan and Middle Eastern food at the moment, so this features heavily in my menu suggestions.
What’s the best/most memorable menu you’ve worked on?
We have provided ‘carve at the table’ lamb to a beautiful couple and their guests in London, a 6-course wedding breakfast in Portsmouth –smoked chicken and mango salad followed by shots of mushroom and marsala soup, then chilli prawns on a shirazi salad, then blood orange sorbet followed by roast sirloin of beef and apple crumble with salted caramel and vanilla ice cream. We’ve also worked on some wonderful picnic menus.
Do you have any exciting events/
menus coming up this year?
We’re providing a French themed picnic on the Isle of Wight and we’re getting involved with the Amazing Thailand Festival in Milford.
How do you present your food?
I try to be imaginative when I serve canapés – I’ve got old books, clock faces, mirrors and slates. Presentation is important with food. I use smart white crockery for the main meals, and the afternoon teas I serve on vintage china.
What food do you see being popular this year?
The ‘carve at the table’ idea is popular and a lot of clients are asking for Ottolenghi inspired menus – big salads, spicy and aromatic meat – the Middle Eastern theme!

Here at Petal & Feast we are super pleased to release our newest project into the wild!
The Secret Barn is a ‘proper barn’, on a proper farm, nestled down a quiet country lane in West Sussex. With views of The Downs and lovely countryside, this barn is the quintessential rural idle, complete with a paddock for camping (up to 50 happy campers), an orchard – perfect for a Darling-Buds-of-May-Style, Humanist, or hippy-hand-fasting type ceremony, and lawn for canapé-ing on or toasting marshmallows over the fire pit. There is use of The Secret Barn itself (seats up to 90/stands up to 180), with beams crying out for fairy lights and floor boards begging to be danced on! Think trestle tables, festoon lights, hay bales, star-gazing, wild flowers and festivally fun. The Secret Barn is an authentically rustic hideaway, it has lots of old woody beams and original flooring, it is not a ‘done-up wedding barn’, and we love it
all the more for its cracks and creaks – hopefully you will too. It is by no means a wedding factory and we will only be booking a very limited number of weddings there between about May and September, we have no intention of turning this little slice of Sussex into a wedding conveyor belt, and we want every couple that books to be able to relax and enjoy it, without the feeling that they have to be out and cleared up for the next wedding in line.
We have parking and Portaloos, nicely hidden away in an outbuilding. If you are looking for a wedding-y wedding venue then The Secret Barn is probably not it. If, however, you are looking for something more relaxed and properly rustic we have that in spades! You would be able to come and set everything up beforehand, enjoy your day, and come back to clear up and pack up your bits. As we are only booking a few weddings a year we can give you more time to set up
and pack away; there’s more time to get creative and you can do the clear up in a fairly relaxed way too.
If you have been disheartened by chair covers, saddened by sugared almonds or disillusioned by the formality of it all, then we might be just the antidote you are looking for. So, you have set the date, the venue is booked, the canapés and wine have been selected and you have seen your dream dress. You want to look and feel amazing, but have you thought about making time in your busy wedding planning schedule to get yourself fit, toned and feeling fabulous for your big day?
Many brides don’t consider this element of wedding planning. This should be high on your list of priorities as the fitter and stronger you are, the more you will be able to cope with the demands, and let’s face it, at times stressful task of planning your wedding.
Weight Loss – This is a very big subject so I will try to keep it brief. If you want to lose weight then you will have to pay attention to how many calories you are consuming versus how many calories you burn off. Simply put, if you consume more calories than you burn off each day, then the excess will automatically be stored as fat. Therefore, you need to be in a calorie deficit in order to lose weight. Just by making small changes to your daily diet and including some effective exercise will help you to lose body fat (weight).
Exercise – The most important thing to consider is ‘will it be something that you enjoy’? Do you like group training or one-to-one instruction? Where do you want to train? And what type of exercise? The possibilities are endless! It is most effective if you can find an exercise that combines both cardio and strength training such as kettlebell workouts or pole fitness as this will give you a bigger calorie burn and leave your body burning calories for hours even after your workout has finished.
Time Scale – Everyone is different and has a different body composition but on average it is not recommended to lose more than 2lbs per week. The best measure of your changing body and fat loss is a tape measure and your own clothes. If your exercise provider offers body composition checks then take advantage of this.
If you are fit, strong and healthy ahead of your big day you will have increased confidence, improved body image, clearer skin, have bundles of energy and feel great too! You never know, you might even want to continue with your new healthy lifestyle after the wedding too.

Don’t Rain On My ParadeCast your mind back to the summers we had in the 80s. If you booked a party for August it wouldn’t cross your mind that it would be anything less than glorious sunshine. Al fresco dining was a given. There simply were no wet weather plans. But oh how times have changed! And do you want to risk it on your wedding day? I’ve seen some complete wash-outs. Receptions totally geared up to sunshine – bales of hay, hog roasts, tea on the lawn – only for the heavens to open, guests to be huddled in too-small tipis, having to wade through the mud in high heels to get to the Portaloos. I’ve seen brides who’ve refused to believe it could possibly rain on their wedding day only to be mortified when the sky turns black. Of course, rain is a great
excuse for colourful brollies and wellies to match your theme and as long as your guests are warm, cosy and dry it’s fine. As long as there IS a plan.

Wax Lyrical about Wax FlowersSaracen brides made an enchanting impression on the Crusaders who brought orange blossom back home to England for their sweethearts. Symbolising chastity and innocence to the ancient Chinese, it also came to symbolise fertility as the flowers and fruit can appear on the plant at the same time. Queen Victoria wore it on her wedding day; it was in her hair, pinned all over her dress and given to her guests as favours tied with silk ribbon. She also made popular the inclusion of myrtle, symbolic of luck and fidelity, at her daughter’s wedding. So, the 19th century girl without an orangery to call her own needed an alternative. Enter the wax flower. The blossoms and buds
were made from paper or textile coated with beeswax. Sprigs and trails of flowers, attached to gowns, shoes and headdresses were made up in a loose natural style. As fashions changed the headdresses became much more stylised and took on the form more of tiara with regimented lines of buds and blossoms in up to three rows at a time. Feathers, beads and wired diamantes were added too. Once creamy white in colour, the 19th century flowers develop a honey tone with age. Towards the end of the century, paraffin wax was used and tends to remain much whiter. Pearl paint developed to make artificial pearls was adapted by the wax flower makers and by the 1930s other types of flowers had appeared, lilies

being very much in vogue at that time. Wax flowers continued to be worn through the 1940s but as fashions changed again, and with the development of post war plastics, the availability and popularity of these tiny treasures waned.

“I run a community choir. They sang ‘Everywhere’ by Fleetwood Mac during the ceremony. We put out song sheets so that everyone could join in… and they did! We also had a lovely trio made up of choir friends who sang ‘Sweet Bride’ by Kate Rusby. Martha Paton, a beautiful singer/songwriter sang ‘Wanderers Wandering’ (her own song) to walk us down the aisle and ‘Signed Sealed Delivered’ as we finished the ceremony, she also played during dinner. After dinner we had a fantastic band called The Swing Ninjas and then our friend Cherelle DJ’d from behind the bar.”

The All Important First Dance...
Anna Sin and her pop-up band are a skiffle act who spend their time vagabonding around the UK and stalking Brighton’s watering holes with residencies around the city. They’ve played in venues from churches, beautiful weddings to club nights, festivals, corporate parties, diners and dives.
The band pride themselves on their shape-shifting ability; they’re able to scrub up for a wedding, scrub down for a club night and put their specs on for a self-run workshop with the elderly.
The first dance is the most important song to feature in your wedding soundtrack; not necessarily because of its tradition but because in all honesty, it can be the only tender moment a newlywed couple have together until the end of the night. Providing the music for the first intimate and private moment between a newlywed couple is a privilege I am overjoyed to experience. When people ask me what I’d suggest as a first dance, I always say the same thing, “this is the first song you will hear, the first song you will dance to and the first song
you’ll always remember as a twosome; make this a song that means something to you.” With that in mind I have compiled a list of songs that would mean something to me or have done to many happily married friends of mine, in the hope that it inspires you to do the same.

Make-up is more advanced than ever before and, with HD cameras, make-up artists are more aware of their application methods. HD can show every line from a brush or sponge, if not blended well. When I started working with make-up, I researched the possibilities and found all makeup is only as good or bad as the artist applying it. It’s not the make-up product that will make or break the look, it’s the artist’s methods.
Airbrush make-up is liquid applied via a small airgun in a super fine mist that gives a thin layer on the skin creating undetectable coverage. Some formulas are with or without
silicone, paraben free and not tested on animals. Foundation colours can be mixed and, being such a fine mist, your true skin tone shows through making it look more natural. Most are water-resistant, although do not wipe away tears or sweat, instead just ‘blot’ to ensure 18 hours of wear. It is often used to camouflage tattoos and any unwanted skin discolouration as it does not come off with slight rubbing or brushing.
Mineral make-up is fine powder made from oxidizing processed crushed minerals. It creates an even porosity on the skin’s surface for a smoother, matte finish. Its natural composition
includes reflective properties, creating an almost pearly finish. And as lovely as it is, light will reflect off the minerals, creating a distinctly brighter, lighter face thus making it unsuitable for photography.
Traditional make-up is the most versatile and can be applied in many different ways. Your skin type will determine the best formula suited to you. A good, high quality product can look awful if applied incorrectly. It is incredibly flexible and can be fixed within seconds, so allow for occasional touch-ups. Make-up with SPF will make your face whiter in pictures.
Ultimately, it all depends on your personal preference. I always recommend a trial to see the full effect and how it looks on your skin. My team and I prefer using airbrush make-up because of the speed, ease and flawless results every time.

These sweet little vanilla scented meringue kisses can be coloured to match your theme – here I’ve used pretty pastels. Put them in big glass bowls on your dessert or dining tables for guests to share, or place small handfuls in ribbon-tied cello-bags for delicious home-baked wedding favours.
Ingredients:100g free range egg whitePinch of salt150g caster sugar50g icing sugar, sifted1 tsp good quality vanilla extractGel food colours
Method:Preheat the oven to 80c, gas mark ¼ and line a couple of baking trays with parchment paper.
Place the egg whites and salt in a large clean bowl and begin
whisking on a high speed. As the whites are stiffening, gradually add the caster sugar. When the whites reach the ‘stiff peak’ stage stop whisking and carefully fold in the vanilla extract and icing sugar. Divide the meringue mixture equally according to the number of colours you are using and add gel colour to each bowl to achieve your desired shades. Be careful when adding the colour as it is very concentrated! Spoon each coloured mix into a disposable piping bag fitted with a star nozzle and pipe your kisses onto the parchment lined baking trays. Bake for 2-3 hours until completely dry and crisp. Store in an airtight container until needed.
