  • 31. IntroductionDefinition

A domain name is a simple means to identify and access a Web site.

    Examples: voila.frnice-aeroport.aerotrademarkexplorer.com

Two components make up a domain name:

The Sub-domain is the component that the owner can create to identify a company, service oractivity.Examples: voila

    nice-aeroport

The Top Domain or Domain Extension is the component under which the domain name is registeredand is separated from the sub-domain by a period (.).

    Sub-domain

Sub-domains can contain up to 63 characters, and may include: Any or all of the letters in the alphabet, from A through Z Any or all numbers between 0 through 9 The hyphen -

All other characters, such as the slash (/), the underline (_), the apostrophe (), the space ( ), theperiod (.) or other punctuation marks are not usable.

    Domain Extensions

Top Level Domains (TLDs) TLDs come in two categories: generic (or international) and geographic (or national)

Generic Top Level Domains or gTLDsThese domains are not associated with a country and include the following 14 extensions:aero (aeronautic) biz (business)com (commercial) coop (cooperative)edu (education) gov (government)nfo (information) int (international)mil (military) museumname (family name) net (network)org (nonprofit organization) pro (professional)

Country Code Top Level Domains or ccTLDsThese domains are associated with a country. They are two-letter codes that represent countries.

Second Level DomainsThe dot . Is a character that serves to separate the two different levels. There are approved second-level domains with such extensions as .com.fr, .co.uk, .tm.fr, .asso.fr. There are also privatesecond-level domains such as nice.aeroport.fr. These domains are not included in the service.

  • 42. Access to Domain NamesAll QuestelOrbit service contract customers have access to the Domain Name Service, which is availablein English at www.trademarkexplorer.com.

You can access the search screen in two ways:1. By clicking on Domain Names search on the upper right-hand corner of the Search menu.

    2. By clicking on the link domain n@mes on the results page of a trademark search.

  • 53. The Search

    The Search Screen

Wildcard (* and ?) domain name searchEnter the domain name in this field box.

Identical SearchTo conduct an identical domain name search, enter the exact domain name without truncation. Keep inmind that the hyphen - can be part of a domain name. Therefore a search on the name inter-net willnot yield internet.com. Similarly, the search internet will not yield the domain name inter-net.com.

Similarity SearchTo conduct a similarity search, use the truncations (wildcards) * and ?. The asterisk * replaces anunlimited number of characters. The question mark ? replaces exactly one character. You can usethese two truncations as prefixes, suffixes or infixes of the search term.

Note: In searching, the truncated term must have at least three characters with the truncation * and atleast two characters with the truncation ?.

    Examples:

Searching alexander* will yield the domain alexander and all other domains thatstart with alexander

Searching *alexander* will yield the domain alexander and all other domains thatcontain alexander

Searching alex*ander will yield the domains that start with alex and end with

  • 6ander.Searching ?lexander will yield the domains with lexander preceded by any one

character. Examples: alexander, ulexander 4lexander, etc.

Accessing Domain Names in Order to Complete Your TrademarkSearchWhen you access the search screen by clicking on the link domain n@mes after a trademark search, thetrademark name that you have selected will automatically appear in the field box Wildcard (* and ?)domain name search.

If this trademark contains only one word, it will be included automatically without truncation. If thetrademark contains more than one word, an unlimited truncation * will be inserted automatically betweeneach word. If the trademark contains characters that are unauthorized for domain name use, they will bereplaced by an unlimited truncation.

Specifying an ExtensionIf you wish to limit your search to a specific domain name, you only need to enter in the field boxWildcard (* and ?) domain name search, the name following the desired domain extension.Example: voila.frWithout specifying an extension or modifying other criteria, the search will run On a group of domain names excluding the least pertinent fields when conducting the search online On generic a selected group of generic domain names and the national domains that correspond to

the trademarks country (as indicated by the additional TLDs), as in the case of search to complete atrademark search (see Appendix on page 19).

GroupsTo fine tune or enlarge your search, you can make use of three large categories of groups:

Trade GroupsThese groups divide countries by trade or commercial exchange treaties: Andean Pact A group of countries from northeast and South America. EFTA the European Free Trade Association, consist of Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and

Switzerland. NAFTA the North American Free Trade Agreement, consists of Canada, Mexico and the United

States. Benelux European Union Mercosur consists of countries in the southern tip of South America Geographic GroupsThis category includes country groupings based on geographic lines. The Americas Asia Europe Middle East Australia and Oceania Africa

Other GroupsThis final category consist of two groups: Generic top Level Domains Global Top 50 Countries

  • 7You can display detailed information on each group by clicking on the name of the group. To limit yoursearch to one or more groups, click on the corresponding radio boxes.

Other OptionsYou may also modify search criteria by using one or more of the following:

Exclude gTLDs from resultsClick on this options radio box if you wish to exclude from your results generic domains when you: Do a total search by default (without selecting groups) Use the NAFTA group

Additional TLDsChoose this option if you want to: Add one or more domains to one or more selected groups

Example: generic + .fr Limit your search to more domains that are not within a group

    Example: .com and .fr

You must enter the domain extensions without the period . and separate one from the other by acomma.

Exclude Some Less Relevant TLDs from ResultsDeselect this option if you do not want any restrictions on your total search.

Search ExampleIn the example below, you search French, English and German generic domains, that containEVASION.
