The existing laws and regulations do not fully regulate the chemicals and contaminants in your paints. The U.S. Government only regulates the VOC quantity for claims of zero VOC, but they do not regulate the effects of these compounds for indoor air quality. Most modern paints are acrylics which contain acrylic resin, water, clay, talc, calcium carbonates, and additives to improve performance, which may contain VOCs, phthalates, formaldehyde, organic solvents, styrene, amines, free monomers, APEO, and cosolvents such as PEG, PG, POE, endocrine disruptors and biocides. TVOCs (total of all VOCs from interior sources) and additives are where the majority of pollution occurs contributing to and causing cancer, asthma, Sick Building Syndrome (SBS), Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and other endocrine and immunological effects, not to mention what they do to the environment.

We have obtained Cradle to Cradle® (C2C) certification version 3.0 bronze level for 13 of our interior and exterior paint products; completed Healthy Product Declarations™ (HPD); completed Eurofins VOC requirements for 28 day testing and asthma-free and hypoallergenic testing; and obtained a scientific study that certifies our marketing claims of no chemical toxicity.

We make bio-logical or mineral paints, a game changer for healthy environments and a healthy planet. Mineral paints form a crystalline structure that bonds with the surface. You can see their molecular crystalline shape (see diagram1 and microscope detail of a silicate2). This crystalline shape is just like that of a honeycomb3.

These shapes indicate the natural structure of how our paint bonds when applied on a wall. The molecular shape permits a mineral paint to breathe and these crystalline structures mimic the reoccurring patterns commonly found in nature.

Why is a breathable wall important? Because it permits moisture and air to move more freely in a closed environment. Mineral paints absorb CO2 acting like a magnet to attract air thus completing the cycle of micro-crystallization permitting a mineral paint to become harder with time. This creates a more durable paint and mold resistant system.

Acrylic paints form an adhesive structure that sticks to the surface. There is no crystalline shape (see diagram4 and microscope detail of a polymer chains5). As you can see the molecular pattern is closed. This means that an acrylic paint is not breathable. Acrylic paint companies make claims that they are natural, organic, non-toxic, environmental friendly, but this is not backed by science. Acrylic paints’ molecular structures are not BIO or natural.

Painting your walls with an acrylic paint means that they will never breathe because it seals the environment. Painting acrylic is similar to wrapping your walls with cellophane, thus creating a perfect environment that traps humidity, toxins, and promotes mold growth. BreathabilityThe micro-crystalline structure of our mineral paints allows air and moisture vapor to permeate through the surface into the substrate, providing a healthy exchange of air. ROMA’s Domus line mineral paint can provide up to 95% of permeability when applied to non-painted virgin product surfaces.

DurabilityBecause of the micro-crystalline bond formed by our mineral paints they create a more durable coating. Durable coatings mean less frequent applications of paint, saving material and labor costs, as well as reducing carbon footprint.

Luminosity & ColorROMA’s Domus line mineral paint is luminous because of dynamic color refraction due to the mineral content. Thus color palates are more vibrant providing more depth and light. Using earth oxides tints with our mineral paints allows UV stability and provides decades of endurance without color loss unlike acrylic which is not UV stable and can show significant fading of color over time.

Mold ResistantROMA’s Domus line mineral paints are inherently resistant to mold and fungal growth due to their high alkalinity. Mineral paints chemical structure and breathability helps prevent the growth of mold on paint surfaces as compared to acrylic paints which oxidize very quickly and are thus prone to mold within their molecular structure.

Odorless & Toxic FreeOur mineral paints contain no solvents, are almost completely free of TVOC (Interior Air Emissions) and completely free VOC (Exterior Air Emissions), odor free, hypoallergenic and asthma-free. Acrylic paints can contain a combination of petrochemicals, phthalates, and biocides, high levels of TVOC, and always a certain amount of VOC.

Fire-ResistantROMA’s Domus line mineral paints are inherently non-combustible and have excellent resistance as well as reaction to fire. Potassium silicate has been used for centuries to treat wood products so that they are resistant to burning. Acrylic paints contain petrochemicals and acrylic which are more likely to burn in a fire.

SustainablePotassium silicate is the primary binder in our mineral paints, an abundant, natural, raw material. Acrylic paints are derived from a chemical process of petrol refinement to create resin that when mixed with certain coalescing agents, creates a paint product.
