EZAKAMACKENZIE NEWSNEWSS T A Y I N F O R M E D July to Sept 2016
Tuberculosis is one of the most driving causes of mortality in
South African hospitals. No one can be denied treatment as the
disease is curable. Drugs are available and accessible free of
charge for all patients diagnosed with TB. The poor treatment
outcome for drug resistant TB have been a challenge for the TB
Control Programme in the Country and worldwide in the last
decade. In order to make an improvement we have to make a
change, the question is what change can we make that will
result in improvement? We cannot afford to do the same thing
over and over and expecting different results. There is a need
for us to take a break and analyze the outcome produced by
the the system we have in place.
What do we have to do with the continuous low cure rate, high
defaulter and mortality rate?
Decentralization of MDR TB Management, short term regimen,
Introduction of new drugs may be the response adopted by the
DOH to access the multifactorial issues affecting the progress in
the fight against TB.
Unfortunately new change may bring new challenges so we
“Service providers and beneficiaries need to work together in
order to achieve our targets for a better living society free of
TB.

SURPRISE SURPRISE BY MEN’S FORUM
Men's forum surprised all female staff at Don McKenzie hospital, with something secretly organized for their mothers and sisters. They have been holding meetings as usual when or-ganizing this surprise. When asked how did they came to this decision, their response was that some of the females do not have people who would organize something for them during their month i.e. Women’s day.
They collected money from all males in the Hospital, bought red roses for all females staff in the Institution. Staff were immediately called to the hall without knowing what is happening, when entering the hall, refreshments and roses for each and every female staff were given by male staff. Female staff appreciated the love shown by Izwi Lamadoda i.e. Mens Forum
Everybody was shocked, as no one ever thought of such a surprise. The management ap-preciated the effort, as staff are often not commended for their good work. This action created
A good interpersonal relationship between males and females in the Institution.

CAREER DAY AND CAMP FOR ARV CLINIC ADOLESCENTS
Don McKenzie ARV Clinic cares for around 250 adolescents and young people living with HIV since 2007 . During that time some of them were 12, 13 years of age. There are four different support groups: a total of 70 adolescents form part of two groups that meet alternate months on a Saturdays so as not to be disturbed during school days, for friendship, peer support, medical consultations and medication and to play games and develop life skills. A doctor, nurses and counsellors are closely involved with caring for and mentoring these groups. Two new groups have recently come into being: a group of 15 adolescents with unsuppressed viral loads who meet on a Friday with a dedicated counsellor and with their caregivers to discuss difficulties and a group of 15 young adults who have completed matric who attend a Friday clinic as a group.
Careers day
Two careers days were held during the month of July. Adolescents from Ethembeni clinic were invited on a walk about to different departments in the hospital were the different career opportunities were explained and demonstrated to them and they were told what qualifica-tions are required for each job. They were surprised to learn how many other people, apart from nurses, work in hospitals. Ethembeni staff are grateful to everyone at Don McKenzie who contributed to two very successful days.
CARREER DAY TEENS AT CAMP
ACTIVITIES PERFOMED AT CAMPSITE
Camp
The teen clinic camp was held again this year. 42 young people attended a weekend camp sponsored by Umndeni Care and facilitated by Camp Sizanani. It was wonderful to have two of our own teen clinic attendees return to camp as facilitators. The support they provide and the example they set for the younger teens was inspiring. The camp provided a wonderful opportunity to have fun, dream about the future and set goals, share concerns, build friend-ships and raise questions that cannot be discussed freely at home.
Truth be told
Eight of our teen clinic members performed a play, Truth be Told, written and directed by Nhlanhla Phewa at the Paediatric Pre-conference at the Coastlands Hotel in Umhlanga prior to the International AIDS Conference. Months of sacrifice in time and travel costs culminat-ed in a beautifully and touching performance that highlighted many of the drivers of the HIV epidemic in the community but also spoke of hope and courage. The performance was very well received by local and international pediatricians who attended the workshop and it drew much media attention.
Right to Care training
Staff at Ethembeni attended a two-day workshop in February that was facilitated by Right to Care. Staff received training on their flipster tool for use with adolescent support groups. Since February this tool has been used for life skills discussions at teen clinic on Saturdays. Important topics such a pregnancy and stigma are unpacked in an interesting and interac-tive way .

ACTIVITIES ON THE DAY
On the 20th of April 2016, the mens forum was officially launched at Don McKenzie Hospital. They have invited officials from Head Office to train them on matters related to males in the health sector which is dominated by females and in general. She spoke of gender equity, where females qualify to get senior position over males leading to males being threatened by this situation. She mentioned that men are afraid to talk about the abuse they experienced e.g. sexual, physical abused by females
They were reminded about their responsibilities as the heads of the families. In many cases they used this gift in the wrong ways e.g. being leaders in crime, abuse and domestic violence. Men are meant to be good leaders ,they need to protect their families, to love their families.
Whilst training was in progress they were joined by MEC (Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo) for Health who was secretly invited and honour the invitation. He commended males in the hospital for taking this programme forward. He mentioned that in the health sectors males are always known as people who are displaying bad behavior whereas there are some males who are very useful in their working environment. He made an example of a male nurse who worked extra hours as he would be called to assist in handling psychiatric patient in a certain ward
