Cooling Inlet Air Improves Turbine OutputChoose Evaporative Cooler or Chiller Coils to Create Higher Mass-Flow Rate

Cooling the turbine inlet air --even by a few degrees -- canincrease power output substan-tially. This is because cooled air isdenser, giving the turbine a highermass-flow rate and resulting inincreased turbine output andefficiency -- even as much as 0.4%per degree Fahrenheit or about0.7% per degree Celsius. (Seegraph on p. 4)

Donaldson offers two well-proveninlet air cooling methods:Evaporative cooling and chillercoils. The chart at right containsguidelines for their application.

Donaldson evaporative coolersand chiller coil systems arecurrently cooling gas turbineengines all over the world, fromSouthern California to SaudiArabia -- in hot & arid climates, hot & humid climates, and inplaces with seasonal heat.

Designs range in size from 25,000cfm to 1,300,000 cfm, and areavailable with choices in mediaefficiency and materials.

    Economical operation Uncomplicated system

Can cool the inlet air regardless of ambient humidity Can be sized for small or large systems Broad range of cooling achievable, down to 45F/7C

    Advantages:

Disadvantages: Cooling efficiency depends on relative humidity of ambient intake air....high humidity can inhibit cooling effect Need source of make-up water

Need source of chilled water Causes slightly higher P than an evap cooler does

    Chiller CoilsEvaporative Cooler

This Donaldson GDX filter system + ChillerCoil filters and cools the air for an AlstomGTX100 gas turbine in the seasonally hot &humid climate of the upper midwest USA.

    Chiller Coil System

    ngertruText Box

  • Donaldson designs the chiller coilsystem as a module that is typicallypositioned downstream of the airfilters. This allows the coils, finsand parts to stay clean enough tofunction well for many years. Onsome systems where thispositioning is impossible orundesirable for some reason, werecommend using pre-filters toensure the cleanliness andfunctionality of the coils.

For maximum turbine perfor-mance, the design temperature ofthe air leaving the cooling systemand entering the turbine is typicallyno less than 45F / 7C. Theambient air temp and the altitudeat the site are the major factorsused in sizing and designing a coilsystem. Cooling agents are usuallyeither water or a water/glycol mix, depending on local ambientconditions. While Donaldsondoesnt supply systems containingammonia, we will work with yoursupplier who does.

How It WorksAs airflow passes through thechilled coils, the air is cooledthrough an indirect heatexchange with the coolingfluid. The air then passesthrough drift eliminatormedia and into the turbine.

The coils are cold andtherefore condensation iscreated. Condensate dropletsare directed downward andcollected in pans, thendirected out of the system.Typically, allcondensation iseliminated this way, butto ensure air dryness, misteliminator panels are in place toremove any stray condensatedroplets.

    (A) Access Module: Provides access so operators cancheck systems functionality andperform repairs should they benecessary. Can be equipped with lights or accesshatches or doors.

    (B) Chiller Coil Section: Chiller coil tubes are typically madeof copper and caged with aluminumfins that economically and effectivelyextend the cooling surface area. Coilcasings are stainless steel for long life. Supply and return manifoldsdistribute incoming water evenly toindividual coil headers so that all

coils cool the airflow to the sametemperature. When moist air is cooled below thewet bulb temperature, condensationforms. Condensate is collected instainless steel drip pans and directedout of the system.

    (C) Drift Panels: A final preventive measure, drifteliminator panels prevent anyremaining condensate droplets fromgoing into the ducting. Moisture removed by the drifteliminator panels is drained into thesump at the bottom of the unit.

  • (3) Mist Eliminator(1) & (2) Cooling Media

    (1) Clean,Warm Air (4) Cooled Air

    to Turbine Inlet

How It Works(1) When the filtered air passes through the saturated evaporative

cooling media, water evaporates off the wet media. This evap-oration is the process that reduces the air temperature.

    (2) Excess water that does not evaporate is directed downward so asnot to be carried along with the cooled air.

    (3) Cooled air then passes through the integral mist eliminator, whereleftover water droplets are removed.

    (4) Clean, cooled air is then directed into the turbine inlet.

We generally recommend that theevaporative cooler module bepositioned downstream of the filtersection. Our new, improved designoffers several advantages:

Easier installation: Because ofour exclusive construction design(patent pending), there is almost nofield welding necessary duringerection. This means faster, simpler, more reliable installation.

Solid structural design (patentpending) minimizes leak-through.

Fewer mechanical and moreelectrical & electronic controlsyield a highly reliable watercontrol system that is much moresensitive and responsive to waterlevel needs.

Low air pressure drop of 0.3-0.4inches w.g., or 0.5-0.6 inches w.g.,depending on your media choice.

Two coats of epoxy on thecarbon steel structural membersprevent corrosion. Pans and othercomponents are made of corrosion-resistant materials.

Hazard Protection Little or no water carryover, thanks to integral drift/misteliminators that prevent dropletsfrom reaching the gas turbine inlet.

Only captive fasteners are useddown-stream of final filtration.

Cooler Inlet Air Means Higher Turbine OutputOptimizing inlet air temperature increases power output,as the graph below illustrates.

The Donaldson chiller coil system beinginstalled will cool the inlet air for a GEFrame 7EA Gas Turbine in the hot, dry desertenvironment near Onaizah, Saudi Arabia.

For exampleFor exampleFor exampleFor exampleFor example, a gas turbine generator with a Donaldson evaporativecooling system installed at a site having an ambient temperature of 100Fand a relative humidity of 30% could deliver up to 7.6% more powerthan a gas turbine without an evaporative cooler. Evaporative coolingtypically can decrease inlet air temperatures by as much as 20 to 30F,depending on the ambient humidity.

The Donaldson evaporative cooler, positioned behind theGDX self-cleaning air filter, reduces inlet air emperaturefor a Siemens Westinghouse 501FC Gas Turbinenear St.Paul, Minnesota, USA.
