Community unites for

Fort McMurrayby Stephen [email protected]

Residents throughout Morinville pitched in last week to assist those evacuated from Fort McMurray by donating to the Red Cross and to some local initiatives, including those conducted by Curves, Sobeys and Bumper to Bumper / Home Hardware.

One social media group decided to take advantage of one of their members 100 Avenue location to gather some immediate necessities for those making their way to safety along the province’s roadways.

“I was born and raised in Fort McMurray, grew up there, spent all my years until I was about 16 or 17 up there,” said Matt Baty, one of the group’s members. “Now to watch it burn down, I’m gutted. There are people up there that are stranded and looking for help, so we as a group - The Morinville Dark Side Free Speech Society Fu**ers, we’ve decided we’re going to do what we can to help out. With my house being right on the main street, we decided it was a prime location to ask people for donations.”

More than 100 donations of food, cash and supplies were received in just a few hours May 4, items that will be taken to assist those on the journey on the road.

“This is going to people that are stuck on the highway,” Baty said.

As donations were being dropped off by members of the social media group as well as passersby, one displaced Fort McMurray resident stopped to ask where he could buy a kitty litter box.

Kelvin Campbell is staying in Morinville with his uncle and said he doesn’t know if his home was destroyed or not.

“You should see [highway] 63; it’s unreal,” Campbell said, adding the highway was wall-to-wall in cars. “Heading to Wandering River, they’re clogged right up. You can’t get in. They got no fuel. They’ve got nothing.”

Campbell lived in Timberlea, among the last to be evacuated, and said it took him six hours to drive to Morinville.

“It was coming right around, and we could see the flames crackling and everything,” Campbell said, showing some images of the fire drawing near to his home, and wondering if it was still there or not.

Firefighters dispatched But as thousands have headed south to seek

shelter in the Capital Region, three Morinville firefighters are joining a contingent from Sturgeon County to head north to assist.

Morinville Fire Chief Brad Boddez said he received an email from Sturgeon County Fire Chief, Pat Mahoney Wednesday afternoon asking for help. “The Provincial Operations Centre requested some support, and so Sturgeon County wanted to put together a group of eight,” boddez said.

“We supplied three this afternoon. Within 90 minutes they had their bags packed, sleeping bags and personal gear. They’re shooting for a three- to five-day support unit there. It’ll depend on the conditions whether or not we have to send

relief crews. We’re praying for some moisture for them.”

Boddez said he received an overwhelming response from his crew.

“It’s short notice. It’s Wednesday. It’s the middle of the week. In that first 15 minutes I had over 15 guys reply,” Boddez said.

The chief was quick to point out that while his crew is ready and willing to assist, Morinville remains the priority.

“With the overwhelming commitment from the guys to go help out, everyone is still very aware

Businesses pitch in

Throughout Morinville businesses donated to the cause and offered a cut of their business for those in need.

Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce President Simon Boersma spoke of the business community’s ability to rally behind supporting those affected and said something would be set up with the Chamber and local banks.

Businesses large and small took to social media to announce what they were planning. Curves Morinville was one of the first, asking those able to help to drop off water, toiletries, over the counter medicines, diapers, pet food, and other items. Champion Petfoods opened their Edmonton office during business hours Wednesday and Thursday to offer free pet food to evacuees. Bumper to Bumper / Home Hardware announced Wednesday that 10 per cent of all sales on May 7 would be donated to the Red Cross initiative. Proshine Cleaners, a home based auto detailing offered to detail cars for $100 and donate the entire amount to assist those in need.

Donations to the Red Cross relief efforts are ongoing. Those wishing to make a donation can do so at https://donate.redcross.ca/ea-action/action?&ea.client.id=1951&ea.campaign.id=50639.

brought his inspirational message and comedic juggling to Morinville Public School May 4 during Education Week, which also coincided with Youth Week.

Isaak said he has performed all over the world and that some of his shows were strictly juggling shows and that others carried an inspirational theme.

New principal coming to townEverybody we’ve talked to are pretty sad to see Mr. Todd Eistetter

leaving Morinville Community High School at the end of this school year. He’s been a great principal for the school and made sure to connect the school with the community and the community with the school. We hear that Mr. Don Hinks has been appointed as the principal of MCHS beginning in August. He is currently the principal of Eleanor Hall School in Clyde. We’re pretty sure he’ll receive a good welcome from the students, staff and everyone else involved at MCHS.

People doing the right thingA big tip of the hat to the residents of Morinville and Sturgeon County

that have stepped up to help Fort McMurray residents who have taken refuge in our community. Though we managed to capture a few stories in our Page 2 feature story this week, there are just too many people and businesses that are are helping those needing help to thank them all.

Community continues to come together for Fort Macby Stephen [email protected]

Sunday marked the fourth day Jodi Damon and her partner Sébastien Comeau set up a truck and trailer in the No Frills parking lot in Morinville to, like so many in the community, do something to assist those evacuated from Fort McMurray.

The couple says they have filled the trailer multiple times, getting the first day’s haul north to those in need through a truck group they belong to - Western Canadian Powerstrokes.

“Our first day went all up north,” Comeau said. “Our second day, the same thing. Yesterday (Saturday) we went to the campground in Morinville. There’s a lot of people there, about 30 to 40 people.”

Comeau went on to say Sunday’s collection would go to assist those who have taken refuge in Legal both in the campground there and in the homes of friends and family that have taken evacuees in. The couple was planning to set up their truck and trailer Monday, taking supplies to

those who have arrived at Sandy Beach. Damon said a sense of putting herself in the

evacuees’ shoes prompted her to take action. “If that were me I would want people to do

the same. I’m just a very giving person,” she said, adding her view that provincial nd federal leaders had done little to nothing to date. “Albertans - we’re getting it done.”

Damon said Thursday was their first day and that she found the experience overwhelming. “All these people coming up to me crying and saying, ‘I have nothing.’ My heart ached for them and I did as much as I could for them.” Comeau said

his experience was similar. Throughout the community, individuals and

businesses have continued to do their part. A group of local mothers held a Mothers’ Day Event Sunday afternoon, and some local businesses have offered to donate a portion of their sales while others have challenged one another to make matching donations. A number of local eateries have offered discounts to Fort McMurray residents and even free meals, as was the case with A&W.

A potluck dinner for evacuees is planned for the Rendez-Vous Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Rock Band show puts students

in the spotlightby Stephen [email protected]

Morinville Public School (MPS) students and a few parents had premium seating for a rock show in Morinville May 5, one with smoke, fog, and professional sound and lighting. The only thing distinguishing this cultural centre event from a touring show was the band was made up of musicians in the school's Rock Band program.

"It was a way to showcase that we take our music seriously here," said MPS teacher Chris Layton. "Music class is good, but Rock Band is a chance for these kids to dig a little deeper, and learn to play an instrument all the way. I've found that if you put a guitar in their hand, they'll actually practice as opposed to giving them a flute and they'll play a little bit. They're a lot more excited to practice songs that they are going to impress their friends with. Playing Beethoven on the flute is all well and good, but they are not going to call up their friends and say, 'Hey! Come and check this out.'"

Layton said the program, which runs as an option for two hours on Tuesday mornings, had such an impact on the musicians that they are inviting one another over to their homes to practice outside of school. Additionally, students doing solos in the show came in on their recess break and after school to get in more practice.

The teacher pushes the students hard with the attitude that the music is done when it is done right. Though sometimes spending a long time on one small section, by the end it is mastered.

For Layton, the value of the effort far surpasses the annual rock show in front of peers. "We need kids to care about music," he said. "It teaches you math. It teaches you rhythm. It teaches you perseverance, which is a big one."

The magic is in seeing the students evolve from looking at sheet music to that moment when it all makes sense. It is then the student finds their groove and the individual pieces fall together.

"The smiles on their faces and the sweat because they're working so hard; there's nothing more exciting," Layton said. "When I was 14 I wanted to be a rock star. I practiced looking cool with my guitar strapped on before I knew how to play the stupid thing. I didn't have anyone teaching me. I had to do it all by ear, and I drove my mom crazy. These kids have an opportunity to learn how to do it when they are young."

The program has about a dozen and a half

students involved, ranging from Grade 5 to Grade 8.

But the afternoon show was not all music from the student's age range. The band performed Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Beatles, and a powerful version of Metallica's Enter Sandman, before closing with Queen's anthem rock classic We Will Rock You.

Layton said the annual show gives students the chance to show that music is important to them. "I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a teenager that isn't into some kind of music," Layton said. "This is a chance for them to go beyond the t-shirt they are wearing. If they can actually play the songs of the bands they like, that's cool."

Business organizations looking for board membersCommunity Futures and Chamber looking to fill vacancies

by Stephen [email protected]

Two regional business organizations are currently looking for volunteers to serve on their boards. Community Futures: Tawatinaw Region in Westlock and The Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce are both seeking some help.

Community FuturesCommunity Futures: Tawatinaw

Region receives its core funding from Western Economic Diversification and has developmental funding as the main focus. The organization funds start-up and expansion businesses who have gone to traditional lenders and not been able to receive funding. The secondary focus is on educating and assisting entrepreneurs with business planning and other one-on-one consultations on marketing, communications, and understanding financial documents.

Kelly Harris-Martin, General Manager of Community Futures Tawatinaw Region, said her organization currently has the need for four members to bring the board to 12.

The Board of Directors is made up of councillors or other people appointed by the various municipalities within the 14-municipality region. All the appointed positions are filled, but they do have four vacant member-at-large positions.

“We’re looking for people that have some experience in entrepreneurship themselves - be that as a family business, family farm or entrepreneurs themselves,” Harris-Martin explained. “If they believe they have something to bring to the table, we’d love to hear from them.”

The time commitment is attending nine to 10 meetings per year, each of which is about two hours, except for the June Annual General Meeting, which is a full day. The Board does not meet in July, August or typically January.

Harris-Martin said the important thing is finding people willing to look

at the type of developmental lending Community Futures does with an open mind. “Community Futures is really about right person right place, right fit,” she said. “We like to give our clients a hand up, not a handout. Somebody that is willing to look at the individual behind an application ad to help us determine if that is a good fit, both for the region as a whole, as well as for this office. Experience in accounting and that sort of thing is not a requirement to be on the Board. At the end of the day, we like our board members to remember that this is an actual board of directors. It’s not a volunteer committee. So a commitment

to attendance is important. We request a two-year commitment just because of the learning curve.”

Call 780-349-2903 for more information.

Morinville & District Chamber of CommerceCloser to home, the Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce is

gearing up for its Annual General Meeting June 1, and looking for business owners who want to help serve the business community.

The Chamber currently has a 12-member board plus municipal liaisons. Current members include President Simon Boersma and directors Grant Cree, Steve Hammond, Phil Hughes, Jeff Lamarche, Matt Meunier, Penny Modien, Kym Moore, Samantha Olson, Charlene Whitfield, and Leigh Newton.

Boersma told about two dozen Chamber members at the May 4 luncheon that he was hoping to get some new board faces to create some succession planing. The Chamber currently has no vice president in place.

“We’re looking for new blood on the board. We’re looking for people that maybe served 15 years ago. We’re looking for people that have a business in our community or in our region,” Boersma said.

Dystopian spoof is Morinville Public’s next production

by Stephen [email protected]

After teaching the community how to survive a zombie apocalypse last year, a cast of 30 Morinville Public School (MPS) students will spoof movies like The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner through the school’s next theatrical production, Dystopia! The Hungry Maze Game of Divergent Death. The play takes place at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre May 24 and 25.

The hour-long play is by Don Zolidis, the same playwright who penned 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse. That production was MPS’s inaugural theatrical show last year.

MPS Drama teacher Chris Layton said the new play makes fun of the recent run of dystopian fiction for young people where the characters “for no apparent reason” join a faction that will determine the course of their lives.

“We’re making fun of it. The kids all love those movies, so we said let’s have some fun with it,” Layton explained. “When I asked if they wanted to do it, they were totally into it.”

Layton said the students enjoy doing comedy plays. As a drama teacher of many years, Layton said he finds the students have more fun when they

are allowed to be goofy.“I like to stick to comedies.

I’ve found when we do the more serious stuff; the creative juices just don’t flow as well,” he said. “If I can say imagine you are in this situation where there are boulders and things flying at you. What would you do? I’ve got kids that are leaping and flipping around the room as opposed to standing there and looking scared.”

Layton said because his actors are having fun with the play, he believes the audience will as well.

The spring production sees Layton’s cast doubling from their first show. Students have been practicing weekly since February when Layton put out his casting call to all students in Grades 5 to 8.

“I put out a call, not even telling them what the title was, and kids came from all over the place,” he said. “Last time we did it so you could only be in the play if you were in the drama option. This [effort] is entirely after school. This is kids doing this on their own time, so we get the kids who really want to do it.”

The production started with a cold read through of the script, allowing Layton to quickly get a sense of who he wanted in the bigger roles.

“I was actually quite surprising. Some of my Grade 5s are some of the most impressive players in this,” Layton said of the auditioning process.

Though the students have been rehearsing every Wednesday after school for an hour, Layton said rehearsals will ramp up to longer periods as the production nears.

“It’s going really well. I’ve got an assistant director - Miss Bilodeau. I’ve always put on the productions all by myself. It’s great to have an extra person to help me. It’s just such a huge help.”

Despite having death in the title, the drama teacher explained the play is family friendly, and those involved are hoping to see the community come out to support the school play with its bigger cast.

“Every year we are hoping to get bigger and better,” Layton said. “The show is about an hour long. It won’t take up your whole evening, but it is an inexpensive way to have a fun night.

“We’d like for this to become a community event. We don’t want this just to be MPS people coming. If you are interested in drama at all, it’s cheap, and it’s fun, and we want to turn this into an annual event. At the end of May every year, we want to have the community together and get as many kids [as possible] there to see the show.”

The play takes place at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre May 24 and 25 with doors opening and 6:30 p.m. and the show starting at 7 p.m. both nights. Tickets for the production are $5 and available at the school and the door. Proceeds from the show will go back into the school’s drama program.

Brochu recipient of Legion 70 year service pin

by Lucie RoyMorinville News Correspondent

The Royal Canadian Legion, as it is known today, came into being in Winnipeg in November 1925. At that time, it was named the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League (BESL) as shown on the hat badge worn by Leo Brochu. Alberta had joined the organization in June 1926. The BESL was dropped from the name in 1961.

As the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Alberta North West Territories Command celebrates its 90 anniversary, the Morinville Legion celebrated 70 years as of February this year. Leo Brochu is the only surviving member of the original charters members of the Morinville Branch.

Legion Comrades Walter Corbett and Danny Clarke presented Leo Brochu with his 70 years of service pin at Aspen May 5.

At the age of 97 Brochu has been a Legion member for 70 of those years. Leo was born and raised in Morinville, joined the military and returned home, helped to form the Legion and remains a loyal member to this day. In 2001 Leo received a letter from Adrienne Clarkson, Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces for his loyal service and in 2005 Leo was presented a Certificate of Merit for sixty years of loyal and dedicated service to the RCL. Leo was also presented with his Life Membership in the last two years.

In 1908, Brochu's father Amedee attended a wedding in Morinville and stayed. With $500 in 1910, he built a carriage shop of his own. The shop was downstairs and the carriages were brought upstairs by the ramp where they were painted. Leo was born September 1918 in Morinville to eighth generation Amedee Brochu of Quebec and Adeline Fortier to a family of two brothers and eight sisters. His parents were married January 1913 at the St. Jean Baptiste Church in Morinville with Father Gauthier blessing their marriage.

Amedee was the Mayor of Morinville from 1921 to 1924. In 1922, Amedee operated the Brochu House and Sign Painting and Woodworking and in 1922 took the Massey Harris Farm Implement Dealership until his retirement in 1958.

Leo said they had living quarters on the top floor and he lived there until he moved into Heritage Lodge in June 2001. The building is still standing today and is located near the corner of 104(Boisvert) Street and 101 (Laval) Avenue not far from the Legion.

Leo joined the military and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the war from 1941-1945 as a chef. He learned this trade at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Leo said he started a Bakery Shop on Main Street in Morinville in 1949 and continued in this business until he retired in 1978.

The early years of the Legion in Morinville started with the Founding Association. Named the Post War Association it was founded at a meeting held at Parish Hall 29 April 1945.

An interim organizational meeting of War Veterans was held at the Massey Harris commercial establishment on 8 Dec.1945 and a committee was elected from those present, which included Mark Saffin, Alex Reid, Percy Logan, P. Conway and Hubert St. Arnault.

At a meeting held in the Parish Hall in April 1946 the total funds of the Post War Association was turned over to the newly formed Morinville Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion British Empire Service League. This ended the era of the Post War Association. The Morinville Branch Organization meeting was held Jan 1946 with Conway elected President and the following chosen as Charter members: Tom MacGuigan, John Hrushka, Leo Brochu, Laurence Brochu, Gilbert Macdonald, Lawrence and Louis Macdonald, T. Conway, Wilfred Beaulieu, Fred Belliveau, Mickey Conway, Hubert St. Arnaud, Mark Saffin and Charles Pelletier.

Bike ride pedals into 25th yearAnnual MCHS trip pays tribute to fallen Morinville resident

MCHS students make their way along the highway during a recent training ride for the upcoming trip to the mountains.

It has been many years since Roger Champagne was gunned down in Las Vegas by a man looking to feed his drug habit. But the Morinville man, well known for his kindness in the community, has never been forgotten by friends, family or the hundreds of Morinville Community High School (MCHS) students who were born some years after the man’s passing. Such is the legacy of Roger Champagne whose memory is honoured each year by MCHS students who take to the mountains for a bike ride that carries his name. For many of those years, the Champagne family has presented a bicycle to a student to take on the annual trip.

Roger Champagne was one of the original people to organize the annual mountain bike trip, and he built a tandem trailer to haul the bikes and supplies to the starting point of the

trip. After the riders had begun their journey, he’d follow the students in his vehicle, offering help and a ride to those who encountered trouble along the way – if he couldn’t fix their bikes himself. Champagne, well regarded for his skills in the kitchen, did much of the cooking on the trips.

Twelve students ranging from Grade 10 to 12, accompanied by some teachers and adults, will participate in the 25th Annual Roger Champagne Memorial Bike Trip from Kootenay National Park to Jasper between May 17 and 21.

MCHS teacher and trip organizer Greg Boutestein said he has taken part in the bike trip since 1997.

“It’s a big year for us. It’s kind of special,” he said, adding they added an extra leg to mark the five-year increment of the trip. “It’s a four-day tour this year. The kids will cycle close to 300 kilometres.”

This year the cyclists will follow the same

220-kilometre route they have used for the past decade, plus an extra day trip to get to that route. They will leave May 17 and start the second day with a 70-km ride on Thursday. The last three days will see the students ride the regular 220-km route.

“They’ll start in Kootenay National Park; then they’ll ride through Kootenay over to border into Banff. From Lake Louis, they will head north to the Ice Fields, which is our normal route.”

Boutestein attributes the quarter century longevity of the trip to its appeal.

“I think it is a really unique opportunity for kids,” he said. “Obviously, John Henderson set up a phenomenal trip all those years ago, and any time a trip extends beyond the life of the school it started in - this is one of the only things [remaining] that started at Primeau when it was the high school. I think John and Roger put something together that was really special and even if the numbers are lower, there is a core

SLAM is a Youth community basketball program for St Albert that has been around since 2001. The program

focuses on development of the youth in this sport through a fun and progressive program. This is NOT an elite club and we have youth of all skill levels. At the

younger years (5-11) the youth are grouped with their peers as much as possible.

Over 90% of volunteer coaches are accredited under the NCCP courses

group that goes. They get hooked and want to go back. It’s to convince kids - as John used to say - to step outside their comfort zone to take a challenge, to take a risk, and kind of scare yourself a bit.”

In addition to the annual Roger Champagne Memorial Bike Trip, the school is planning the 4th Annual Fred Scharmann Memorial Hiking Trip, which takes place in the same vicinity as the bike trip. The hike honours local business owner and Bike Trip supporter Fred Scharmann, who was a long-time support truck driver on the Roger Champagne Memorial Bike Trip before his death.

Boutestein said with the two excursions, the school is seeing some crossover between events. “I’m hoping that will continue over the next few years,” he said. “On the bike trip, we discuss the hiking trip and on the hiking trip we discuss the bike trip as well. Hopefully, you are going to get to get some cross traffic, but really an opportunity like this doesn’t come along a lot.”

The teacher said the trips took a large amount of support from longtime and new volunteers to make it possible and to allow students to make a special journey for about $200.

In preparation for the ride, Boutestein has been organizing Saturday morning training runs. “We require that the kids do four training rides out of six,” he explained. “The kids just have to make sure they are there for four, and we’ll do rides anywhere from 35 to 40 kilometres on the Sturgeon loop. The biggest one we do is a 70-km loop out to Busby Corner in Westlock County, and we come back through Legal. If the kids have done all the training rides plus the bike trip; these kids have ridden an excess of over 500 kilometres.”

Locals earn recognition for free throws

Free throws earned some Morinville and area youth provincial recognition in the Annual Knights of Columbus Alberta - Northwest Territories Free Throw Championship.

Jules Froment took 2nd place in the Girls Aged 12 category, and Hayley Deveau took third spot in the Girls Aged 13 category. Ayakah Paziuk took fourth place in the Girls Aged 10 category and Andrew Seguin placed third in the Boys Aged 13 category.

Breaking the rules

Primeau student Kevin Hessell was one of many to pay $2 for the Break the Rules/Build a School fundraiser held last week at the school. Hessell said his pass allowed him to break a rule every day. Broken rules through the week included having a Kapow pop in class, allowing electronic devices at lunch, wearing hats all day, hanging out in the hall-way, and wearing PJs on Friday.

The school goal is to raise $10,000 to-wards the Pope Francis Elementary School building in the Philippines, a project in part-nership with Development and Peace. The GSACRD goal is to raise $200,000.
