17th Annual Golf Benefit is a successful ventureHoffman Homes for Youth held its 17th Annual Golf Benefit on June 9, 2014. 124 golfers took to the Hanover Country Club course to show their support of our program. Once again Computer Aid, Inc. was our platinum sponsor and committed 24 golfers to the field in support of our program. Our Diamond Sponsors included Essis and Sons Carpet 1, Harold Hartlaub and PNC Bank. Hillandale was a gold sponsor. We would like to thank all of our sponsors and golfers for their support. Proceeds from the event, which netted approximately $25,000 will be used to put new roofs on some of our older children's residences. We hope to see everyone at next year's event.

Emmanuel UCC of York plants roots at HHEmmanuel UCC Of York visited our campus to plant some flowers and plants in front of Emmanuel residence. Margaret Sultner organized the crew of ladies and made the front of the residence look beautiful. Those who participated in the planting of the flowers are Libby Loser, Kelly Reimold, Yvonne Wise, Nancy Wise, and Susan Zerbe. On behalf of the girls and staff from Emmanuel residence, we wish to thank all of you for your donation of plants and time to plant them for us.Thanks Emmanuel UCC of York!

Dear Friends,

For the past 40 years, Hoffman Homes and the Lincoln Intermediate Unit (LIU) have worked together to provide educational services to the children in our Residential Treatment Facility. Over those years, the types of children served by Hoffman, and the challenges they present, have changed.

As a result, next school year will be the last for the LIU to provide services to the children in our on-grounds school. We have made the decision to obtain a license to operate a Private Academic School for classrooms certified in Special Education, Autism, and Alternative Education beginning with the 2015-16 school year. Children needing regular education classrooms will continue to attend public school in the Gettysburg Area School District.

We have retained a consultant to help us obtain the license, and plan to hire a Director of Education early in 2015 who will be responsible for hiring and training our teachers, developing curriculum and policies, and working with our consultant on the licensing process.

We are very excited about this change to our program as we see the potential for great benefits to the children in care, as we will be able to more closely integrate the school program with our clinical programs and our use of the Sanctuary Model. We are grateful to the LIU for their many years of service to the children at Hoffman Homes and look forward to working with them next year to make the transition as smooth as possible.

KIDS CORNER

What challenges did you have that brought you to Hoffman Homes?I was aggressive and was in a lot of other placements. When I get mad because of my past, I would curse, kick things and punch others. I would also throw things and destroy property.

How have you changed since your placement at Hoffman Homes?I am using the help and enjoy horse therapy. They teach me how to care for the horses. I also go to school and like community meetings. There is a lot of friendship and support here. I learned some coping skills like speaking to staff about myissues, I've learned to take breaks to calm down, using my stress ball and drawing in my drawing notebook. I love Maizy the dog. Pet therapy has helped me calm down too…I love petting the dog.

Easter Bunny Visits Hoffman Homes

A Bible Study Class is offered at Hoffman Homes for Youth to all the children who wish to attend. Mike Stonesiefer, Vice President of Safety and Facilities Management organizes and teaches the class. The class is not mandatory, but between 20 and 30 children attend the class, which is held weekly in our chapel.

On the evening of May 6th Girl Scout Troop 80975 from Gettysburg visited Hoffman Homes for Youth. They toured our Pet Therapy Program and our Therapeutic Horsemanship Program. They also agreed to help with our box top for education program. Thank you girls for your support!

Mental Health Awareness - Did You Know?Did you know that May is Mental Health Awareness month? Let's all remove the stigma of mental illness from our communities and recognize it to be no different than your physical or spiritual health. Let's reach out to those who need a hand. We are all better when we recognize and treat this illness.

Easter was a joyous time here at Hoffman Homes. Even the Easter Bunny made a surprise visit to the children at Hoffman Homes. The Easter Bunny then conducted an Easter Egg Hunt for all the children on campus on Saturday, April 12th. The children enjoyed searching for eggs and eating the candy that was hidden.

Hoffman Homes is in the process of becoming certified in the Sanctuary Model. This model is a philosophy of trauma-informed care. Sanctuary encourages all HH employees to ask, “what happened to you?” instead of “what's wrong with you?” While we are committed to following and teaching the Seven Commitments of “Sanctuary”, becoming certified is our goal. To the right is one of the many projects the children completed to help them learn and grow.

Their commitment to assisting children is exemplary. Most of all it provides hope which is essential to any healing process."
