Cognitive-taking your mind off what you are doing3 Types of DistractionNationally, driver distraction is a major focus of the U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While all distractions can endanger drivers safety, texting is the most alarming because it involves all three types of distraction. 3In 2009, the state recorded 947 people were using cell phones at the time of a crash.

That would be similar to 3 out of 4 kids sitting around you in Greenville High School.

It Could Happen to You Michigan crash data captures information relative to cell phone use. This was the data collected on 2009 regarding automobile accidents caused by cell phone usage and texting.

4To keep drivers eyes on the road & their hands on the wheel

Recognize the potential dangers when drivers are not fully focused on the road.

Violators will be fined $100 for a first offense and $200 for any additional offenses. Thumbs on the Wheel CampaignThe Office of Highway Safety Planning is launching this program to encourage awareness and compliance of the laws and dangers of texting and driving. Billboards, public service announcements, and posters are publicized in this campaign. The OHSP will use federal traffic safety funds for their campaign aimed to reducing driver distractions.

As with all traffic laws, law enforcement officers will take appropriate action when witnessing the violation of texting while driving.
