Homework 1. Superpower Characteristics and forms of power This is the textbook work that goes with lesson 1. It covers these three lines of the spec.
There are 3 sets of tasks on slides 2,6 and 7. You need to complete ALL of these and will need the textbook scans on pgs 3,4,5,8,9 to do so.
There is then an optional TED talk to watch and some further reading should you want more.
First set of Activities: Use the double sided handout from Hodder Pg 132/133 & Pearson Pg 136 ON SLIDES 4/5.
1. Define 'superpower'
2. Outline the 'global' nature of superpower status.
3. Define 'emerging superpowers' and 'regional powers'?
4. Outline the 4 'pillars of power' that are necessary for superpower status.
5. Glue in your copy of table 3.1 below and add the correct characteristic of superpowers in the correct place.
6. How and when did the UK emerge as a superpower? Has it retained this status?
7. Who is the current primary global economic superpower? Full sentence please. 8. Which country is set to challenge this in the future and why?
9. "China is a long way off challenging the USA's position as the primary global superpower." Use the bullet points from the 2015 Time Magazine article at the bottom of pg 136 to support this claim.

Second set of Activities: Use Pg 1 of the second double sided handout from Pearson pg 138 and Hodder Pg 134
1. What two strategies can a country use to gain or maintain power? Answer in a full sentence.
2. What is meant by 'cultural hegemony'?
3. Use the 'Hard vs Soft' Box to: a) Outline the difference between hard and soft power b) Glue in your copy of 'the spectrum of power' c) Outline why teh use of different types of power is necessary.
4. Outline how the UK, despite no longer being a global superpower, has still managed to exert significant. Refer to History, culture and diplomoacy.
Third set of Activities: Use Pg 2 of the second double sided handout from Pearson 139,138 and Hodder Pg 134.
1. Why are the USA and UK increasingly reliant on soft power to maintain their global influence?
2. What was the main form of power used to maintain power and geopolitical influence from colonial times to the late 20th century?3. How and why has this changed today?4. Give an example of hard power still be important today though.
5. Outline Halford Mackinder's geostrategic location theory
6. Explain how the USA's policy of 'containment' post WW2 is an example geostrategic location theory.
7. Develop Mackinder's theory further with reference to his 'Heartland' idea. Explain how it influenced geostrategic thinking and attempts at hard power in the first half of the 20th century.
