    for teachers providing practical assistance

    andresources,improvinglearningoutcomes

    forstudentswithDownsyndromeandtheir

    classmates.

    Collaboration

    Theapproachtakenisalwayscollaborative;the

    teacheristheexpertintheindividualclassroom,

    whereasDownSyndromeVictoriahasextensive

    expertisesupportingstudentswithDown

    syndrome.Althoughnotwostudentswith

    Downsyndromearealike,therearearangeof

    teachingstrategiesandresourceswhichhave

    proven successful in meeting specific needs. The

    DSISSconsultantworksalongsidetheteacher

    toidentifytheresourcesandstrategiesthatwill

    bestsuittheparticularneedsoftheirstudent,the

    teachingstyleoftheteacher,andthecultureofthe classroom.

    Inclusion

    Lackofpreviousexperiencewithstudents

    withDownsyndromemayhighlightthe

    need for curriculum modifications. Many

    teachersunderstandablyfeelapprehensiveor

    overwhelmedwhenfacedwiththeinclusionof

    achildwithDownsyndromeintheirclassroom.

    However,mostteacherslaterreportthat

    addressing the learning needs of the s tudent

    withDownsyndromeprovedtobeless

    dauntingthantheyhadexpected,andthatin

    doing so other children in the classroom also

    benefited.

    Best Practice

    International research consistently demonstrates

    that the strategies developed and implemented

    toassiststudentswithanintellectualdisability

    benefitabroadrangeoflearnersinthe

    classroom.

    DownSyndromeVictoriaisacommunity

    associationmadeupofpeoplewithDown

    syndrome,theirfamiliesandsupporters.

    DownSyndromeVictoriahasmadetheDown

    SyndromeInclusionSupportServiceaccessible

    toallVictorianschoolsbyassigningastandard

    state-widesubscriptionfee.Theservicereceivesno ongoing government funding and community

    fundraising covers the significant travel and

    accommodation costs involved in delivering the

    servicestate-wide.

    Thisserviceisofmaximumbenefitwhenthe

    familyofthesupportedstudentaremembersof

    DownSyndromeVictoria.
