Thursday, July 7 at 8:30PM Tokyo Tramps "Don't be fooled by the look - or name. In 2010 they won the River City Ohio Blues Competition and went on to compete at the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. in February, 2011, The Tokyo Tramps were the runner-up in the 2010 WFNX best local R&B act category and in 2007 they won the WFNX best local blues act category. Friday, July 8 at 9PM Johnny Bluehorn and the Caretakers Johnny Bluehorn has entertained countless fans of music in Boston and the Northeast region for more than twenty-five years. He has since become a double-barreled performer as both a trumpeter and vocalist encompassing a varied range of musical styles, from gritty Memphis R&B to rhythmic New Orleans second-line jazz; from swingin' Kansas City blues to heartfelt '70's soul. During these years he has put his talents to work by performing with a plethora of regional artists who have called upon the Blue Horn to add some special magic to their sound. These artists include the Love Dogs, Diane Blue, Mario Perrett, the Hot Tamale Brass band, Chris Fitz “Sax Gordon” Beadle and many others. A few months ago Johnny Bluehorn launched a new phase in his career by fronting his latest project, Johnny Bluehorn and the Caretakers. Backed by some of the region's best instrumentalists, JBH sings and plays a soulful repertoire of music by a variety of artists, including some original compositions. Saturday, July 9 at 9PM Shirley Lewis She is known as Boston‟s “Regal Queen of the Blues.” One of our favorite performers at Smoken‟ Joe‟s, Shirley Lewis is an award-winning blues artist, member of the Down Home Blues Society and all around legend in the Blues community. Ms. Lewis began her career opening for such artist as BB King and Ike and Tina Turner. For Shirley, singing is like poetry and dance all in one, making people have fun while she is on stage. Shirley always fills the house so be sure to make a reservation early. Thursday, July 14 at 8:30PM “Rosy” Rosenblatt and the 11th Hour Band Richard “Rosy” Rosenblatt is simply one of the finest harp players you will ever hear. After joining Erin Harpe and the Delta Swingers they soon won the Boston Blues Society‟s blues challenge and went on to become semi-finalists in the international Memphis competition last Wednesday. Frequently he can be heard wailing away on J. Geils Band tunes with Danny Klein‟s Full House at stages all across New England. Now, Rosy returns to Smoken‟ Joe‟s with his own band, the 11th Hour Band. Originally formed in the late 70‟s, the 11th Hour Band got together to play at the legendary and now defunct Speakeasy blues club in Cambridge. Now they are back and sounding better than ever. Mark your calendars, this is a do not miss show! Friday, July 15 at 9PM The Love Dogs Eddie Scheer, the amazing musician, singer, songwriter, who hosts the best party in Boston every Tuesday night returns with his own band, the incredible Love Dogs. Simply put, The Love Dogs are one of the most exciting, finest, in-demand bands in New England. This is a band that really has the recipe for the Blues. Take one red-hot horn section - we're talkin' alto, tenor, baritone saxes and trombone - down and dirty. Add liberal amounts of barrelhouse boogie-woogie piano and stinging Fender guitar. Pour over a funky and swinging rhythm section that Blues Review Magazine called "the best in the business", and top it all off with a crazy and charismatic front man with one of the biggest blues voices around. Then, season with a few years on the road tearing up juke joints, festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and Canada on both sides of the Atlantic. Sound tasty? It's a recipe for music and mayhem, for intensity and irreverence. Saturday, July 16 at 9PM Luke Mulholland Band One of our favorite bands. Luke Mulholland is a rare young talent. At age 19, he could easily be considered at once a guitar virtuoso, a prolific songwriter, and a vocalist blessed with a voice that sounds wise beyond his years. His music effortlessly blends the blues, rock and pop together with a

phenomenal guitar style that has earned him the admiration of fans and fellow musicians alike. He regularly opens for Dickey Betts, Bon Jovi, Blue Oyster Cult, John Mayall, and many other major rock acts. Come listen to The Luke Mulholland band perform songs from their sensational new album, Midnight Carnival.

Wednesday, July 20 at 7:30PM On his 40 city tour, from New Orleans, in his only MA appearance – Rockin’ Jake! 5 Time Winner “Best Blues Harmonica” – New Orleans Music Awards! Rockin' Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco with influences from Paul Butterfield, Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Muddy Waters, J. Geils Band, and the Fabulous Thunderbirds. Jake has conjured up this formula that is blowing crowds away from coast to coast. Widely known as a touring juggernaut among his peers, his schedule of over 200 performances per year include clubs, concert venues, and festivals. For more information about the legendary Rockin’ Jake see our feature story later in this newsletter.

Thursday, July 21 starting at 5PM Feestdag – Belgian Independence Celebration with Belgian Beer Tasting and Pairing presented by the PALM Brewing Company! See our feature story and schedule of Feestdag events later in this newsletter. Thursday, July 21 at 8:30PM Dave B & The Hotshots Dave Birkin began his musical career as a member of the legendary Boston/Washington D.C. group “Powerhouse”, sharing the stage with many blues masters of the time including Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, James Cotton, Matt “Guitar” Murphy, and James Montgomery. Together for almost 2 decades, Dave B and the Hot Shots retains three of its original members, Dave Birkin (sax/vocals), Mark Shelford (guitar/vocal) and Ken Steiner (acoustic bass/vocal), performing authentic New Orleans sounds from the late „40s through the mid „60s. Joining them will be Richard Malcolm (Shirley Lewis Band) on drums, and Jim Heffernan on keys. Friday, July 22 at 9M Juke Joint 5 Down home, old school, no-nonsense, house rocking, kickass electric blues… just a few of the words we use to routinely describe the great music from one of our favorite bands, Juke Joint 5. The Juke Joint Five brings together musicians with a commitment to the sounds that lie at the roots of today‟s blues: the voices of Chicago in its heyday; the raw horn-driven jump blues of the forties and fifties; the Sun Studios rockabilly twang; and the kind of Delta blues that still gets people dancing in today‟s Mississippi juke joints. This band is high-octane, electric, unapologetic “old school.” They are:

Gretchen Bostrom (vocals); virtuoso guest guitarist, Derek Toa; Dick “The Poet” Lourie (sax); Jason Adams (bass guitar); and the talented new drummer, Noah Teshu. Saturday, July 23 at 9M Danny Banks and Monster Mike Welch The dynamic duo of Monster Mike Welch and Danny Banks tear it up at Smoken‟ Joe‟s. Mike burst onto the Blues scene at the age of thirteen, when he was publicly given the nickname “Monster Mike” by Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd at the opening of the first House of Blues club. Recent years have found Mike dividing his time between guest stints (on CDs by Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Nick Moss, Johnny Winter and more). Teen drum prodigy, Danny Banks, has “ that mojo and it certainly is working”. Since dazzling a national audience on David Letterman‟s ``Late Show,‟‟ he‟s been busy playing with music luminaries such as the Rick Russell Band, Duke Robillard, James Montgomery, Bruce Bears, and many others. Be sure to listen for some of Danny‟s wonderful, original songs off his second CD, recently released, “Crazy for You.” Thursday, July 28 at 8:30PM The Hubcaps Last January we were treated to a very special night of extraordinary entertainment by the Hubcaps, a band that recently regrouped after having been a very popular band playing at the Plough and Stars in Cambridge during the late 80‟s and early 90‟s. This is a true powerhouse band with their exciting blend of New Orleans Rhythm and Blues, a little Country, a little Rock, and some zydeco mixed in. The members of the Hubcaps include Mickey Bones (drums, vocals, Cajun accordion), Joe Pete (guitar, vocals), and Brian Rost (bass) and Mike Annis (drums). These are four of the original members of the sensational New Orleans zydeco/rock band The Boogaloo Swamis who are four times Boston Music Award winners. The fifth member of the group is a regular at Smoken‟ Joe‟s, the world travelled and award winning sax and clarinet player, Scott Shetler. Add to this a little burlesque humor and you have one outrageously great night of entertainment. Friday, July 29 at 9PM Jose Ramos and No Way Jose! Jose Ramos is one of Boston‟s most exciting and prolific Blues and R&B vocalists, and his No Way Jose! Band is a multi-cultural blend of musicians from all over the world who have been packing the clubs around Boston for over 20 years. Equally at home playing Jazz, Jump Blues, Classic R&B, Swing or Funk, Jose Ramos and the No Way Jose! Band keeps audiences hot, thirsty and on the dance floor all night! This is Jose‟s birthday so it is going to be an especially fun night! To help celebrate, Jose has brought some good friends to keep the music lively. He has invited Tim Foxx Gibson on bass, Joe Davis Jr. on drums, Eric Finland on keys, and the brilliant young harp and guitar master visiting from Italy, Noe Socha. Saturday, July 30 at 9PM Sara Thompson With a voice like Susan Tedeschi, a soul like Janis Joplin and the sultriness of Norah Jones and Alicia Keys, new vocalist Sara Thompson is already making her mark on the local music scene. Known for her passion, vocal and song versatility and powerful 6‟ foot stage presence she performs a mix of blues, blues rock, soul, R&B, pop/country and contemporary rock. Whether performing acoustically as a duo or rocking out with a full electric band, she has never ceased to impress, inspire and all out entertain a crowd of any size.

Sundays at 7PM Geoff Bartley and Friends Geoff Bartley has been called both a prophet and the “Godfather of the Boston Folk Scene”. He plays some mean acoustic blues and smoken‟ bluegrass, too. Each week he is joined by a special guest. Mondays at 7:30PM Bruce Marshall Open Mic Bruce Marshall is a veteran musician of 34 years with national experience. He is a talented song writer, vocalist, guitarist, and he has led his own bands for years in the NE area and nationally as a member of the Toy Caldwell Band. Bruce Marshall brings these collective talents as he hosts our Open Mic night at Smoken‟ Joe‟s. It‟s an evening where seasoned pros and emerging artists share the stage to rock the house with their fiery fortitude. His virtuoso guitar playing crosses the boundaries of Rockabilly, Blues, Jazz and Country music, and he's also a fantastic singer and songwriter. His original tunes tell funny and poignant stories of love, loss and lots and lots of liquor - prepare to be entertained!!

Completing this dynamic group will be our very own queen of the ivory whites, Alizon Lissance. Tuesday, July 26 Big Jack Ward, Travis Colby and “Downtown” Steve Brown No stranger to Smoken‟ Joe‟s and a frequent guest of Eddie‟s Tuesday Night Allstars, Big Jack Ward has a heart as big as his talent. For the last ten years he has been a member of the legendary West Side Chicago Bluesman Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson's band "The Magic Rockers". Travis Colby is a familiar name in the blues scene as not only the keyboardist for blues giant Roomful of Blues but also for his own power trio, the Travis Colby Band. “Downtown” Steve Brown is the drummer and long time friend of Eddie‟s in the Love Dogs.

Probably the best harmonica player in New Orleans ... a clear, sweet tone that gives an infectious sense of lilt. – DownBeat Harmonica hellcat lives up to his moniker. - OffBeat magazine, New Orleans Rockin' Jake has been hailed by many as one of the premier harmonica players in the country. His original sound is a hybrid of second line, swamp funk, blues and zydeco. Originally from the East Coast, the "blues bug" bit at an early age for Jake. He immersed himself in the thriving regional blues scene, which boasted such talents as Roomful of Blues, Ronnie Earl, Duke Robillard and Sugar Ray. Primarily self-taught, Jake briefly studied with Jerry Portnoy, harmonica player for Muddy Waters. In 1990, Jake moved to New Orleans where he began to work with such notable New Orleans mainstays as: blues diva Marva Wright, Mem Shannon, Coco Robicheaux, Little Freddie King, Tommy Ridgley, Eddie Bo and other local legends.

In 1995 he formed the Rockin' Jake Band as an outlet for his original music and his unique swampy sounds. One year later Jake recorded his debut CD, "Let's Go Get 'Em" (on Rabadash Records) which earned him national recognition. In 1999 Jake produced "Badmouth", on Zuluzu records followed by "Full-Time Work" in 2002 on the same label. It included an all-star cast of musicians such as John Gros (Papa Grows Funk), Ron Johnson (Karl Denson's Tiny Universe), Bryan Stoltz (the funky Meters), Ben Ellman and Theryl "Houseman" de Clouet (Galactic). In the spring of 2004 he recorded his band‟s first live cd. Over four days in Key West, Florida at the Green Parrot he and his band record “5 p.m. Breakfast” on Zuluzu records. Jake's work has also been heard on the soundtrack of "The Big Easy" television series, the theme for the "Mike Ditka Show, " and a Miller Beer commercial.

He is a five-time winner of 2004 Off Beat Magazine's coveted “Best of the Beat” award for best harmonica player. Jake is truly a hard working musician with extraordinary talent. He and his band pour out their souls in every performance with high energy and electricity which consistently brings the audience to their feet. In his spare time Jake managed to snare some culinary kudos in New Orleans, taking the trophy for "Best Barbequed Brisket" at the 1999 New Orleans Musicians Barbeque Competition, and launching his own line of signature hot sauce: "Badmouth" (the edible version)..."man it's hot!"...just like the band! Jake also takes time to give back to his New Orleans community with Project Prodigy Music Camp for children as well as the Blues in the Schools programs in New Orleans and other cities in the US.

If you have ever met Smoken‟ Joe Dodd you will know that there are two things he will never compromise on: the quality of the food coming out of his kitchen and the quality of the beer served in his restaurant. At Smoken‟ Joe‟s we are proud of our long association with one of the highest rated beer companies represented in America, the PALM Brewing Company from Belgian. We are partnering with the PALM Brewing Company on July 21st to celebrate Feestdag, Belgium Independence Day. Feestdag commemorates the anniversary of Belgium‟s separation from the Netherlands in 1831, and the formal establishment of the kingdom with the crowning of Leopold I of Saxe-Coburg, who agreed to support the constitution drawn up by the National Congress. In Belgium this is called Feestdag – loosely translates as “Party Day.” At Smoken‟ Joe‟s, Feestdag also translates into party day and here‟s how:

We will be serving three distinct brands from PALM. At a very special discount each beer will be paired with an appetizer, a special entrée, and also a desert. There will also be 2oz. beer flights available at a special discount. PALM Ale will be paired with Smoken‟ Joe‟s famous wings. PALM Ale is an authentic Belgian Amber Ale that is exceptionally fresh, with aromas of toasty malt, a bitter-orange palate and a tartly refreshing finish and it is neither heavy nor bitter. PALM Ale has an alcohol content of 5.4% Alc./Vol. PALM Steenbrugge Tripel will be paired with Joe‟s sinfully delicious smoked ribeye steak. The Steenbrugge Tripel is gold-blond beer with a rounded malt quality, a scented touch of hops, a warm full flavor and a smoked fermentation aroma combined with the subtle Bruges herbal mixture “Gruut”. Steenbrugge Tripel has an alcohol content of 8.7 % Alc./Vol. Kriek Boon will be paired with Smoken‟ Joe‟s divine dark chocolate cake. Kriek Boon is a beer of Spontaneous fermentation, 100% Lambiek beer base, matured in oak vats and “maceration” of real cherries “Krieken” cherries) at least 25% or 250 grams per liter of beer. Boon Kriek is a fresh, sour-sweet, red-colored beer that produces a wonderful head. Kriek Boon has an alcohol content of 4.0% Alc./Vol.

Each pairing with beer will be sold at a $2 discount or $8 less for the complete meal. Three 2 oz beer flights of the Palm beers will be sold for only $5. (A beer flight is a set of small sampling glasses of beer, usually from 2 to 4 oz., for the purpose of tasting. Beers from this set are usually sampled from light to dark. With the explosive growth of fine craft breweries in America, and the enormous variety now available to beer lovers, beer flights are becoming common in many restaurants and bars.) While you are tasting these fine Belgian beers you may want to reflect on exactly why the PALM Brewing Company is world famous: PALM Breweries is Belgium‟s largest independent/family owned brewery which dates back to 1747, with lineage to current owner, Jan Toye. PALM is the only brewery in the world that brews all four fermentation styles: top fermented ales, bottom fermented pils, mixed fermentation sour ale and spontaneously fermented lambics. PALM is Belgium‟s best selling ale. Originally brewed at the beginning of the 1900s, as pilsners and lagers were becoming popular due to the discovery of pasteurization, the Belgian Brewing Guild challenged its brewers to create an ale that was true to Belgian tradition but was lighter and had refreshment. They called this style –Speciale Belge (Belgium Special Ale) –and PALM became the brand synonymous with this style. So come early on the 21st and enjoy some PALM beers and meet with our friend, PALM representative, Bob Couto, and maybe at that time you can ask him why PALM is always spelled with all caps. How would you like to impress (or horrify) your friends this summer by becoming a beer snob? Sound too difficult? A mountain too steep to climb? An impossible dream? Don‟t worry, your friends at the Smoken‟ News will guide you every step of the way. Let‟s continue our discussion on PALM beer. Here‟s some interesting facts sure to impress: In Belgium, every beer has its own glass. This is the same glass used by PALM in Belgium. The brew master has painstakingly chosen this to highlight the aroma and flavor. Notice this glass has a proportionally large ball to hold the bulk of the liquid and then a narrow aperture. The goblet shape allows the beer to breathe and helps to release the flavor while consuming, while maintaining a head.

Now let‟s do some drinking. Like wine, there are some established guidelines for evaluating a new beverage. The Beer Advocate, an extraordinary resource for beer lovers and based in the People‟s Republic of Cambridge, has a number of beer evaluation guidelines. This is one of the simplest ones but still a quite good one. Let‟s get to work! When analyzing a beer, you shouldn‟t just swill it down, burp and say "it's great" or "it's crap." And, even though tasting is an individual art, there are a few steps, which if followed, will take your beer tasting to a blissful new level.

Look:

Take pause and marvel at its greatness before you partake of it. Raise the beer in front of you, but don't hold your beer to direct light as this will dilute its true color. Describe its color, its head and its consistency.

Agitate:

Swirl your beer, gently in the glass. This will pull out aromas, slight nuances,

loosen and stimulate carbonation and test head retention.

Smell: 90-95% of what you experience is through you sense of smell. Breathe thru your nose with two quick sniffs, then with your mouth open, then thru your mouth only (nose and mouth are connected in the experience). Let olfaction guide you. Agitate again if need be, and ensure that you are in an area that has no overpowering aromas. Enjoy its bouquet.

Taste:

Now sip the beer. Resist swallowing immediately. Let it wander and explore your entire palate. Let your taste buds speak. Note the mouthfeel, the consistency of the liquid's body, and breathe out during the process of tasting. This process of exhaling is called "retro-olfaction" and will release retained stimulations at the mucus and mouthfeel level, but at a higher temperature. At times this will be the same as the olfactory process if not different and complimentary. Try to detect any sweetness, salty flavors, acids and general bitterness. Explain what they are, or what they are similar to. Also, try tasting the beer after it warms a bit (just a bit mind you). Really cold beer tends to mask some of the flavors. As a beer warms, its true flavors will pull through, become more pronounced.

B-B-L-T could easily stand for Boston‟s Best Luncheon Treat but it‟s really Joe‟s delicious improvement on the classic Bacon Lettuce and Tomato sandwich. What he has done here is add nearly a half pound of his divinely delicious, mouth watering smoked brisket. The sandwich has lettuce and tomato as well as 4 strips of bacon and has a thin layer of mayo spread across Texas toast. On the side we add French fries and a pickle and the customer gets their choice of one of Joe‟s homemade barbeque sauces. This sandwich has been taste tested- too many times to count- by our very own staff and we guarantee you are going to love this! Thanks, Joe, for yet another inspired treat from your kitchen.

So, I hope your 4th of July rocks. The weather is fine and it is time to enjoy. It promises to be a
