FUEL RECOMMENDATION

You must use unleaded petrol with anoctane number (RON) of 87 or higher. Yourvehicle is fitted with a restrictor in the fuelfiller pipe which will not allow the use oflarge nozzle used for dispensing leaded fuelat filling station. A label is also attached onrear quarter glass and near the fuel fillerpipe of your vehicle that states:“UNLEADED FUEL ONLY” and “ONLYUNLEADED PETROL”.

Petrol/Methanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and methanol(wood alcohol) are also commerciallyavailable in some areas. DO NOT USEfuels containing more than 5% methanolunder any circumstances. Fuel systemdamage or vehicle performance problemsresulting from the use of such fuels are notthe responsibility of MARUTI and may notbe covered under Warranty.

Fuels containing 5% or less methanol maybe suitable for use in your vehicle if theycontain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.

NOTE:If you are not satisfied with the driveabilityor fuel economy of your vehicle when youare using a petrol/alcohol blend, you shouldswitch back to unleaded petrol containing noalcohol.

Be careful not to spill fuel containingalcohol while refuelling. Fuelscontaining alcohol can cause paintdamage, which is not covered underWarranty.

Use of leaded fuel in vehicle equippedwith catalytic converter is prohibited,because lead deactivates the pollutantreducing components of catalyticconverter and may result in permanentdamage to catalytic converter.

Petrol/Ethanol BlendsBlends of unleaded petrol and ethanol (grainalcohol), also known as gasohol, arecommercially available in some areas.Blends of this type may be used in yourvehicle if they are no more than 10%ethanol. Make sure this petrol-ethanol blendhas octane ratings no lower than thoserecommended for petrol.

Your vehicle comes with a pair of identicalkeys. Keep the spare key in a safe place.One key can open all of the locks on thevehicle.

The key identification number is stamped ona metal tag provided with the keys. Keepthe tag in a safe place. If you lose yourkeys, you will need this number to havenew keys made. Write the number downand keep it in a safe accessible place awayfrom the vehicle.

The fuel tank has an air space toallow for fuel expansion in hotweather. If you continue to add fuelafter the filler nozzle has automaticallyshut off or an initial blowback occurs,the air chamber will become full.Exposure to heat when fully fuelled inthis manner will result in leakage dueto fuel expansion. To prevent suchfuel leakage, stop filling after the fillernozzle has automatically shut off, orwhen using an alternative nonautomatic system, initial ventblowback occurs.

DOOR LOCKS

To lock a front door from outside thevehicle:a) Insert the key fully and turn the top of

the key toward the front of the vehicle,or

b) Push in the lock lever and hold the doorhandle up as you close the door.

To unlock a front door from outside thevehicle, insert the key fully and turn the topof the key toward the rear of the vehicle.

To lock a rear door from outside the vehicle,push in the lock lever and close the door.

If the red mark is visible on the rear sideof the door lock lever, the door is unlocked.

To lock a door from inside the vehicle, pushin the lock lever. Pull out the lock lever tounlock the door.

Always lock all doors when driving.Locking the door prevents occupantsfrom being thrown from the vehicle inthe event of an accident. It also helpsprevent unintentional opening of thedoors.

Child-Proof Locks (if equipped)As illustrated, a child-proof lock is providedfor both rear doors. When the lock lever isdown, position 1, the child proof lock isactivated, and when up, in position 2 thechild-proof lock is deactivated, when thechild-proof lock is activated, the rear doorcannot be opened from the inside even ifthe inside door lock is unlocked but can beopened from the outside.

Be sure to place the child-proof lockin the locked position wheneverchildren are seated in the rear.

Do not use the key to lift up the lid,or the key may break off in the lock.

HatchbackTo unlock insert the key and turn itclockwise. You can also unlock thehatchback by pulling the release leverlocated on the outboard side of the driver’sseat.

Always make sure that the hatchbackis closed and latched securely.Completely closing it helps keepexhaust gases from entering the car.Completely closing the hatchback lidalso helps prevent occupants frombeing thrown from the vehicle in theevent of an accident.

Central door locking system (if equipped)You can lock and unlock all the side doorssimultaneously by using the key in thedriver’s door lock. You can also lock orunlock all the side doors by moving thedriver’s door lock lever rearward or forward.

NOTE:• Use of key in the front passenger’s door

lock, locks or unlocks the frontpassenger's door only.

• Moving the lock lever on the passenger’sdoors, locks or unlocks the passenger’sdoor only.

• Be sure to hold the door handle upwhen you close a locked front door, orthe door will not remain locked.

Raise or lower the door windows by turningthe handle located on the door panel.

Electric window controls (if equipped)The driver’s door has switches 2 & 3 tooperate the driver’s window and frontpassenger’s window respectively.

The front passenger’s door only has aswitch 4 to operate the front passenger’swindow. The electric windows can only beoperated when the ignition switch is in the“ON” position.

TYPE-1To close a window, push the top part of theswitch and to open the window push therear part of the switch.

The driver’s window has an “auto-down”feature (if equipped) for added convenience(at toll booths or drive-through restaurants,for example). This means you can open thewindow without holding the window switchin the “Down” position. Press down thedriver’s window switch completely andrelease it. To stop the window before itreaches the bottom, push the switch briefly.

Since the electric windows consumesa large amount of electricity, the sameshould not be used excessively withengine in “OFF” condition.

Be sure there are no hands or otherobstructions in the path of the driver’swindow when you activate the “auto-up” feature.

The driver’s door also has a lock button 1for the front passenger’s window. When youpush in the lock button, the frontpassenger’s window can not be raised orlowered by operating the switch 4. Torestore normal operation, release the lockbutton by depressing it again.

You should always push in the lockbutton when there are children in thevehicle. Children can be seriouslyinjured if they get part of their bodycaught by the window duringoperation.

Outside Rearview MirrorsAdjust the outside rearview mirrors (with thehelp of control lever, if equipped) so youcan just see the side of your vehicle in themirrors.

Be careful when judging the size ordistance of a vehicle or other objectseen in the side convex mirror (ifequipped). Be aware that objects looksmaller and appear farther away thanwhen seen in a flat mirror.

Adjusting SeatbacksThe seatbacks can be adjusted to differentangles. To adjust the seatback angle, pullup the lever on the outboard side of theseat, move the seatback to the desiredposition, and release the lever to lock theseatback in place.

Seatbacks should always be in anupright position when driving, or seatbelt effectiveness may be reduced.Seat belts are designed to offermaximum protection when seatbacksare in the fully upright position.

Adjusting Seat PositionThe adjustment lever for each front seat islocated under the front of the seat, on theinboard side. To adjust the seat position,pull up on the adjustment lever and slidethe seat forward or rearward. Afteradjustment, try to move the seat forwardand rearward to ensure that it is securelylatched.

To avoid excessive seat belt slack,which reduces the effectiveness of theseat belts as a safety device, makesure that the seats are adjusted beforethe seat belts are fastened.

Wear Your Seat Belts at All Times.

The vehicle is provided with two automaticretracting type seat belts.

To fasten the seat belt, pull the buckletongue attached to the seat belt across yourbody and slide it into the buckle catch sloton the opposite side until you hear a “click”.

head restraints removed.• Do not attempt to adjust the head

restraint while driving.

Head restraints are designed to help reducethe risk of neck injuries in the case of anaccident. Adjust the head restraint to theposition which places the top of the headrestraint closest to the top or your ears.

There are two height positions for the headrestraints. To raise the head restraint, pullupward on the restraint until it clicks. Tolower the restraint, push down on therestraint while holding in the lock lever. Ifa head restraint must be removed (forcleaning, replacement, etc.), push in the locklever and pull the head restraint all the wayout.

To Adjust the Belt

• Automatic retracting typePull the shoulder portion of the beltupwards through the tongue plate.

The length of the diagonal shoulder strapadjusts itself to allow freedom of movement.The seat belt has an emergency lockingretractor (ELR), which is designed to lockthe seat belt only during a sudden stop orimpact.

No modifications or additions of anysort should be made to the seat beltor its operating mechanism.

To reduce the risk of sliding under the beltduring a collision, position the lap portion ofthe belt across your lap as low on your hipsas possible and adjust the belt to a snugfit using the proper method described below.Make sure that the belt is not twisted.

• Make sure that each seat belt buckleis inserted into the proper bucklecatch.

• Do not wear your seat belt overhard or breakable objects in yourpockets or on your clothing. If anaccident occurs, objects such asglasses, pens, etc. under the seatbelt can cause injury.

• Never use the same seat belt onmore than one occupant and neverattach a seat belt over an infant orchild being held on an occupant’slap. Such seat belt use could causeserious injury in the event of anaccident.

• Pregnant women should use seatbelts, although specific recommen-dations about restraint use shouldbe made by the woman’s medicaladvisor.

• Periodically inspect seat beltassemblies for excessive wear and

damage. Seat belts should bereplaced if webbing becomes frayed,contaminated, or damaged in anyway. It is essential to replace theentire seat belt assembly after it hasbeen stressed in an impact, even ifdamage to the assembly is notobvious.

• Infants and small children shouldnever be transported unless theyare properly restrained. Restraintsystems for infants and smallchildren can be purchased locallyand should be used. Make sure thatthe system you purchase meetsapplicable safety standards. Readand follow all the directionsprovided by the manufacturer.

• Avoid contamination of seat beltwebbing by polishes, oils,chemicals, and particularly batteryacid. Cleaning may safely be carriedout using mild soap and water.

• For children, if the shoulder beltirritates the neck or face, move thechild closer to the center of thevehicle.

ˇ̌̌̌̌ˇ̌̌̌̌Be sure to inspect all seat beltassemblies after any collision. Anyseat belt assembly which was in useduring a collision (other than a veryminor one) should be replaced, evenif damage to the assembly is notobvious. Any seat belt assemblywhich was not in use during acollision should be replaced if it doesnot function properly or is damagedin any way.

• Never allow persons to ride in thecargo area of a vehicle. In the eventof an accident, there is a muchgreater risk of injury for personswho are not riding in a seat withtheir seat belt securely fastened.

• Seat belts should always beadjusted so the lap portion of thebelt is worn low across the pelvis,not across the waist. Shoulderstraps should be worn on theoutside shoulder only, and neverunder the arm. Seat belts shouldnever be worn with the strapstwisted and should be adjusted

IGNITION SWITCH

The ignition switch has the following fourpositions:

• Do not use any locally made key.• Should you require duplicate key,

place your order with MARUTIdealer only.

LOCKThis is the normal parking position. It is theonly position in which the key can beremoved.

The “LOCK” position locks the ignition, andprevents normal use of the steering wheelafter the key is removed.

To release the steering lock, fully insert thekey and turn it clockwise to one of the otherpositions. If you have trouble turning thekey to unlock the steering, try turning thesteering wheel slightly to the right or leftwhile turning the key.

To avoid possible injury, do notoperate controls by reaching throughthe steering wheel.

• Do not use the starter motor formore than 15 seconds at a time. Ifthe engine does not start; wait 15seconds before trying again. If theengine does not start after severalattempts, check the fuel and ignitionsystems or consult your MARUTIdealer.

• Do not leave the ignition switch inthe “ON” position if the engine isnot running as the battery willdischarge.

LIGHTING/TURN SIGNALCONTROL LEVER


ACCAccessories such as the radio can operate,but the engine is off.

ONThis is the normal operating position. Allelectrical systems are on.

STARTThis is the position for starting the engineusing the starter motor. The key should bereleased from this position as soon as theengine starts.

• Never remove the ignition key whilethe vehicle is moving. The steeringwheel will lock and you will not beable to steer the vehicle.

• Do not leave children alone in aparked vehicle. Unattended childrencould cause accidental movement ofthe vehicle, which could result insevere personal injury.

• Always remove the key when parkedto prevent unintentional operation ofthe vehicle and to improve security.

This control lever is located on the outboardside of the steering column. Operate thelever as described below.

Lighting OperationTo turn the lights on or off, twist the knobon the end of the lever. There are threepositions: in the “OFF” position all lights areoff; in the middle position the front parkinglights, tail-lights, registration plate light, andinstrument lights are on, but the headlightsare off; in the third position the headlightscome on in addition to the other lights.

With the headlights on, push the leverforward to switch to the high beams (mainbeams) or pull the lever toward you toswitch to the low beams. When the highbeams (main beams) are on, a light on theinstrument panel will come on. To flash thehigh beams (main beams) pull the leverslightly towards you and release it.


Turn Signal OperationWith the ignition switch in the “ON” position,move the lever up or down to activate theleft or right turn signals.

Normal Turn SignalMove the lever clockwise until it clicks tosignal a right turn or anticlockwise to signala left turn. When the turn is completed, thesignal will cancel and the lever will returnto its normal position.

Lane Change SignalSome times, such as when changing lanes,the steering wheel is not turned far enoughto cancel the turn signal. For convenience,you can flash the turn signal by moving thelever part way and holding it there. Thelever will return to its normal position whenyou release it.

HAZARD WARNING SWITCH WINDSCREEN WIPER ANDWASHER LEVER

Windscreen WipersTo turn the windscreen wipers on, move thelever down to one of the three operatingpositions. In the “INT” position (if equipped),the wipers operate intermittently. The “INT”position is very convenient for driving in mistor light rain. In the “LO” position, the wipersoperate at a steady low speed. In the “HI”position, the wipers operate at a steady highspeed. To turn off the wipers, move thelever back to the “OFF” position.

Push down the hazard warning switch toactivate the hazard warning lights. All fourturn signal lights and both turn signalindicators will flash simultaneously. To turnoff the lights, push the switch again.

Use the hazard warning lights to warn othertraffic during emergency parking or whenyour vehicle could otherwise become atraffic hazard.

Windscreen WasherTo spray windscreen washer fluid, pull thelever toward you. The windscreen wipers willautomatically turn on at low speed if theyare not already on and the “INT” positionis equipped.

• To prevent windscreen icing in coldweather, turn on the defroster toheat the windscreen before andduring windscreen washer use.

• Do not use radiator antifreeze in thewindscreen washer reservoir. It canseverely impair visibility whensprayed on the windscreen, and canalso damage your vehicle’s paint.

HORN

To help prevent damage to thewindscreen wiper and washer systemcomponents, you should take thefollowing precautions:• Do not continue to hold in the lever

when there is no windscreen washerfluid being sprayed or the washermotor can be damaged.

• Do not attempt to remove dirt froma dry windscreen with the wipers oryou can damage the windscreen andthe wiper blades. Always wet thewindscreen with washer fluid beforeoperating the wipers.

• Clear ice or packed snow from thewiper blades before using thewipers.

• Check the washer fluid levelregularly. Check it often when theweather is bad.

• Only fill the washer fluid reservoir3/4 full during cold weather to allowroom for expansion if thetemperature falls low enough tofreeze the solution.

Press the center piece of the steering wheelto sound the horn. The horn will sound withthe ignition switch in any position.

WARNING AND INDICATOR LIGHTS

Brake fluid level warning lightThis light operates under two conditions: 1)when the ignition switch is turned to the“START” position, or 2) when the fluid in thebrake fluid reservoir falls below the specifiedlevel. This light may also be used as aparking Brake indicator light. The lightshould go out after starting the engine andfully releasing the parking brake. If the lightdoes not go off or comes on whilst you aredriving, it may mean that there is somethingwrong with the vehicle’s braking system. Ifthis happens, you should:

1) Pull off the road and stop carefully.

Remember that stopping distance maybe longer, you may have to pushharder on the pedal, and the pedalmay go down farther than normal.

2) Test the brakes by carefully starting andstopping at the side of the road.

3) If you determine that it is safe, drivecarefully at low speed to the nearestdealer for repairs.

or4) Have the vehicle towed to the nearest

dealer for repairs.

If any of the following conditionsoccur, you should immediately askyour MARUTI dealer to inspect thebrake system.• If the brake fluid level warning light

does not go out after the enginehas been started and the parkingbrake has been fully released.

• If the brake fluid level warning lightdoes not come on when the ignitionswitch is turned to the “START”position.

• If the brake fluid level warning lightcomes on at any time during vehicleoperation.

NOTE:Because the disc brake system is selfadjusting, the fluid level will drop as thebrake pads become worn.Replenishing the brake fluid reservoir isconsidered normal periodic maintenance.

Parking brake indicator lightThis light comes on when the parking brakeis not fully released and the ignition switchis in the “ON” position.

Oil Pressure LightThis light comes on when the ignition switchis turned on, and goes out when the engineis started. The light will come on and remainon if there is insufficient oil pressure. If thelight comes on when driving, pull off theroad as soon as you can and stop theengine. Check the oil level and add oil ifnecessary (see pages 9-7 and 9-8). If thereis enough oil, the lubrication system shouldbe inspected by your MARUTI dealer beforeyou drive the vehicle again.

• If you operate the engine with thislight on, severe engine damage canresult.

• Do not rely on the Oil PressureLight to indicate the need to add oil.Be sure to periodically check theengine oil level (see pages 9-7 and9-8).

Charging LightThis light comes on when the ignition switchis turned on, and goes out when the engineis started. The light will come on and remainon if there is something wrong with thebattery charging system. If the light comeson when the engine is running, the chargingsystem should be inspected immediately byyour MARUTI dealer.

Do not continue driving long with thecharging light ON as this will drain thebattery 'dead'.

“Malfunction Indicator” LightYour vehicle has a computer-controlledemission control system. A “MalfunctionIndicator” light is provided on the instrumentpanel to indicate when it is necessary tohave the emission control system serviced.The “Malfunction Indicator” light comes onwhen the ignition switch is turned to “ON”and goes out when the engine is started.

If the “Malfunction Indicator” light comes onwhen the engine is running, there is aproblem with the emission control system.Take the vehicle to your MARUTI dealer tohave the problem corrected.

Continuing to drive the vehicle whenthe “Malfunction Indicator” light is oncan cause permanent damage to thevehicle’s emission control system, andcan affect fuel economy anddriveability.

The speedometer indicates vehicle speed inkm/h. The odometer records the totaldistance the vehicle has been driven. Thetripmeter can be used to measure thedistance travelled on short trips or betweenfuel stops. You can reset the tripmeter tozero by pushing the reset knob.

Keep track of your odometer readingand check the maintenance scheduleregularly for required services.Increased wear or damage to certainparts can result from failure toperform required services at theproper mileage intervals and yourwarranty rights may be affected.

When the ignition switch is on, this gaugeindicates the engine coolant temperature.Under normal driving conditions, theindicator should stay within the normal,acceptable temperature range between “H”and “C”. Continuing to drive the vehicle whenengine overheating is indicated, canresult in severe engine damage.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM(if equipped)

The air conditioning system can be used toprovide cooling and dehumidifying, asdescribed below. To turn on the airconditioning system, push in the A/C buttonand move the fan switch to a position otherthan “OFF”. An indicator light will come onwhen the air conditioning system is on. Toturn off the air conditioning system, pushthe A/C button again.

During operation of the air conditioner, youmay notice slight changes in engine speed.These changes are normal, the system isdesigned so that the compressor turns onor off to maintain the desired temperature.Less operation of the compressor results inbetter fuel economy.

PARKING BRAKE LEVER

• Never drive your vehicle with theparking brake on: rear brakeeffectiveness can be reduced fromover heating, brake life may beshortened, or permanent brakedamage may result.

• If the parking brake does not holdthe vehicle securely or does notfully release, have your vehicleinspected immediately by anauthorized MARUTI dealer.

Always apply the parking brake fullybefore leaving your vehicle or it maymove, causing injury or damage.When parking, make sure the gearshift lever for manual transmission isleft in first gear or reverse and thegear shift lever for automatictransmission vehicles is in “P”(PARK). Remember, even though thetransmission is in gear, you mustalways apply the parking brake fully.

The parking brake lever is located betweenthe seats. To apply the parking brake, holdthe brake pedal down and pull the parkingbrake lever all the way up. To release theparking brake, hold the brake pedal down,pull up slightly on the parking brake lever,push the button on the end of the lever withyour thumb, and lower the lever to itsoriginal position.

For automatic transmission vehicles, alwaysapply the parking brake before moving thegear shift lever to the “P” (PARK) position.If you park on an incline and shift into “P”before applying the parking brake, theweight of the vehicle may make it difficultto shift out of “P” when you are ready todrive the vehicle.

When preparing to drive the vehicle, movethe gearshift lever out of the “P” positionbefore releasing the parking brake.

The gear change pattern is shown in theillustration. For details on how to use thetransmission, refer to USING THETRANSMISSION in the OPERATING YOURVEHICLE section (See page 7-4).

The fuel filler cap is located on the left rearside of the vehicle. The fuel filler lid can beunlocked by pulling up the opener leverlocated on the outboard side of the driver’sseat and locked by simply closing the lid.

Remove the fuel filler cap slowly. Thefuel may be under pressure and mayspray out, causing injury.

Petrol is extremely flammable. Do notsmoke when refuelling, and make surethere are no open flames or sparks inthe area.

FOLDING REAR SEAT

The rear seat of your vehicle can be foldedforward to provide additional luggage space.

To lower the seatback, pull up the lockknobs (1 and 2) simultaneously and foldforward the seatback. To raise the seatback,lift it up and push back until it locks intoplace.

When returning a rear seat to thenormal position, make sure thatmovement of the seatback isunobstructed and the seatback issecurely latched.

The sun visors can be pulled down to blockglare coming through the wind screen, orthey can be unhooked and turned to theside to block glare coming through the sidewindow.

This light switch has three positions whichfunction as described below:

1 The light comes on and stays onregardless of whether the door is openor closed.

2 The light comes on when the door isopened.

2) Push the under-bonnet release leversideways with your finger, as shown inthe illustration. While pushing the lever,lift up the bonnet.

To remove the jack, turn its shaftcounterclockwise and pull the jack out of thestorage bracket. To stow the jack, place itin the storage bracket and turn the shaftclockwise until the jack is securely held inplace.

Starting a Cold/Warm Engine

For Electronic fuel injection models• With your foot off the accelerator pedal,

crank the engine by turning the ignitionkey to “START”. Release the key whenthe engine starts.

• If the engine does not start after 15seconds of cranking, wait about 15seconds, then press down theaccelerator pedal to 1/3 of its travel andtry cranking the engine again. Releasethe key and accelerator pedal when theengine starts.

• If the engine still does not start, tryholding the accelerator pedal all the wayto the floor while cranking. This shouldclear the engine if it is flooded.

Manual Transmission

Starting offTo start off, depress and maintain pressureupon the clutch pedal and change into 1stgear. After releasing the parking brake,gradually release the clutch. When you heara change in the engine’s sound (speed),gently apply pressure to the accelerator tokeep the engine sound (speed) constantwhilst continuing to gradually release theclutch.

Gear changingAll forward gears are synchronized, whichprovides for quiet, easy changing. Alwaysdepress the clutch pedal fully beforechanging gears. To help gearshift, the

vehicle is completely stationary.

R (Reverse)Use this position to reverse the vehicle.Make sure that the vehicle is completelystationary before changing into Reverse.

N (Neutral)Use this position for starting the engine ifthe engine stalls and you need to restart itwhile the vehicle is moving. You may alsochange into Neutral and depress the brakepedal to hold the vehicle stationary duringidling.

D (Drive)use this position for the normal forwarddriving. With the selector in “D” range youcan get an automatic downshift (changedown) by pressing the accelerator pedal.The higher the vehicle speed is, the moreyou will need to press the accelerator pedalto get a downshift. This will give youincreased acceleration for overtaking.

2 (Low 2)Use this position to provide extra powerwhen climbing hills, or to provide enginebraking when going down hills. Do notchange into Low 2 at speeds greater than97 km/h.

L (Low 1)Use this position to provide maximum powerwhen climbing steep hills or driving throughdeep snow or mud, or to provide maximumengine braking when going down steep hills.Do not change into Low 1 at speeds greaterthan 53 km/h.

Be sure to take the followingprecautions to help avoid damage tothe automatic transmission:• Make sure that the vehicle is

completely stationary beforechanging into “P” or “R”.

• Do not change from “P” or “N” to“R”, “D”, “2”, or “L” when theengine is running above idle speed.

• Do not rev the engine with thetransmission in a drive position(“R”, “D”, “2”, or “L”) and the frontwheels not moving.

• Do not use the accelerator to holdthe vehicle on a hill. Use thevehicle’s brakes.

• Do not change into Low 2 at speedsgreater than 97 km/h.

BRAKING

The distance needed to bring any vehicleto a halt increases with the speed of thevehicle. The braking distance needed, forexample, at 60 km/h will be approximately4 times greater than the braking distanceneeded at 20 km/h. Start to brake thevehicle when there is plenty of distancebetween your vehicle and the stopping point,and slow down gradually.

If water gets into the brake drums,brake performance may become poorand unpredictable. After drivingthrough water or washing theunderside of the vehicle, test thebrakes while driving at a slow speedto see if they have maintained theirnormal effectiveness. If the brakes areless effective than normal, dry themby repeatedly applying the brakeswhile driving slowly until the brakeshave regained their normaleffectiveness.

Do not switch off the engine whilevehicle is in motion, for example,while driving down a hill as this willcause loss of vacuum assistanceleading to reduction of brakingefficiency substantially.

If servo assistance is lost due to a stalledengine or other failures, the system is stillfully operational on reserve power and youcan bring the vehicle to a complete stop bypressing the brake pedal once and holdingit down. The reserve power is partly usedup each time you depress the brake pedal.Apply smooth and constant pressure to thepedal. Do not pump the pedal.

Even without reserve power in thebrake system, you can still stop thevehicle by pressing the brake pedalharder than normally required.However, the stopping distance maybe longer.

On loose surface where the wheelscan easily loose traction (such asgravel, etc.), the stopping distancerequired for your vehicle may begreater than for a comparable vehiclewith a conventional brake system.Allow for extra stopping distancewhen driving on loose surfaces.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER(if equipped)

The purpose of the catalytic converterinstalled on your vehicle is to convertexhaust pollutants to harmless water vapour,carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Use of leadedfuel in vehicles equipped with catalyticconverters is prohibited, because leaddeactivates the pollutant-reducingcomponents of the catalyst system.

It is very important to keep the engineproperly tuned. Engine misfiring, which canresult from an improperly tuned engine, maycause overheating of the catalyst. This mayresult in permanent heat damage to thecatalyst and other vehicle components.

To minimize the possibility of catalystor other vehicle damage:• Maintain the engine in the proper

operating condition.• In the event of an engine

malfunction, particularly oneinvolving engine misfire or otherapparent loss of performance, havethe vehicle serviced promptly.

• Do not turn off the engine orinterrupt the ignition when thetransmission is in gear and thevehicle is in motion.

• Do not try to start the engine bypushing or towing the vehicle, orcoasting down a hill.

• Do not idle the engine with anyspark plug wires disconnected orremoved, such as during diagnostictesting.

• Do not idle the vehicle forprolonged periods if idling seemsrough or there are othermalfunctions.

• Do not allow the fuel tank to getnear the empty level.

IMPROVING FUEL ECONOMY

The following instructions will help youimprove fuel economy.

Avoid excessive idling:If you are to wait for more than a minutewhile you are parked, stop the engine andstart it again later. When warming up a coldengine, allow the engine to idle until thetemperature gauge pointer comes up to the“C” position. In this position, the engine issufficiently warm for starting off.

Avoid “fast” starts:Fast starts away from lights or stop signswill consume fuel unnecessarily and shortenengine life. Start off slowly.

Avoid unnecessary stops:Avoid unnecessary deceleration andstopping. Try to maintain a slow, steadyspeed whenever possible. Slowing downand then accelerating again uses more fuel.

Keep a steady cruising speed:Keep as constant a speed as road andtraffic conditions will permit.

Keep the air cleaner clean:A dirty air cleaner will cause the carburationsystem to supply too much fuel to theengine for the amount of air being supplied.The result is waste of fuel due to incompletecombustion.

Keep weight to a minimum:The heavier the load, the more fuel thevehicle consumes. Take out any luggage orcargo when it is not necessary.

Keep tyre pressures correct:Under-inflation of the tyres can waste fueldue to increased running resistance of thetyres. Keep your tyres inflated to the correctpressure shown on the label on the driver’sside door or door lock pillar.

TRAILER TOWING

Your MARUTI was originally designed tocarry people and a normal amount of cargo,not to tow a trailer. Maruti does notrecommend you use your vehicle to tow atrailer. Towing a trailer can adversely affecthandling, durability, and fuel economy.

• Wear Your Seat Belts at All Times.The driver and passengers shouldbe properly restrained at all times,using the seatbelts provided. Referto the “SEATBELTS” section forinstructions on proper use of theseat belts.

• Never drive while under theinfluence of alcohol or other drugs.Alcohol and drugs can seriouslyimpair your ability to drive safely,greatly increasing the risk of injuryto yourself and others. You shouldalso avoid driving when you aretired, sick, irritated, or under stress.

HIGH-SPEED DRIVING DRIVING ON HILLS

When driving at a high-speed, pay attentionto the following:

• Stopping distance progressivelyincreases with vehicle speed. Apply thebrakes far enough ahead of the stoppingpoint to allow for the extra stoppingdistance.

• On rainy days, “Aquaplaning” can occur.“Aquaplaning” is the loss of directcontact between the road surface andthe vehicle’s tyres due to a water filmforming between them. Steering orbraking the vehicle while “Aquaplaning”can be very difficult, and loss of controlcan occur. Keep speed down when theroad surface is wet.

• At high speeds, the vehicle may beaffected by side winds. Therefore, reducespeed and be prepared for unexpectedbuffeting, which can occur at the exitsof tunnels, when passing by a cut of ahill, or when being overtaken by largevehicles, etc.

• When climbing steep hills, the car maybegin to slow down and show a lack ofpower. If this happens, you shouldchange to a lower gear so that theengine will again be operating in itsnormal power range. Change rapidly toprevent the car from losing momentum.

• When driving down a hill, the engineshould be used for braking by shifting tonext lower gear (Do this with EITHER anautomatic or manual transmission).

Try not to hold the brake pedal downtoo long or too often while goingdown a steep or long hill. This couldcause the brakes to overheat,resulting in reduced braking efficiency.Failure to take this precaution couldresult in loss of vehicle control.

When descending a down hill, NEVERturn the ignition key to the “OFF”position. Emission control system andautomatic transmission (if equipped)damage may result.

DRIVING ON SLIPPERY ROADS

Remove your foot from the acceleratorwhile changing gear.Do not race the engine. Excessive wheelspin will cause the tyres to dig deeper,making it more difficult to free thevehicle.

2) If your vehicle remains stuck after a fewminutes of rocking, get another vehicleto pull you out.

Do not allow anyone to stand near thevehicle when you are rocking it, anddo not spin the wheels faster than anindicated 40 km/h on the speedometer.Personal injury and/or vehicle damagemay result from spinning the wheelstoo fast.

Do not continue rocking the vehiclefor more than a few minutes.Prolonged rocking can cause engineoverheating or transmission damage.

• Make sure your tyres are in goodcondition and always maintain thespecified tyre pressure. Refer to“TYRES” in the “INSPECTION ANDMAINTENANCE” section for details.

• Do not use tyres other than thosespecified by MARUTI. never usedifferent sizes or types of tyres onthe front and rear wheels. Forinformation regarding the specifiedtyres, refer to the “SPECI-FICATIONS” section.

• Never use oversized tyres or specialshock absorbers and springs toraise (jack up) your vehicle. This willchange the handling characteristics.

• After driving through water, test thebrakes while driving at a slow speedto see if they have maintained theirnormal effectiveness. If the brakesare less effective than normal, drythem by repeatedly applying thebrakes while driving slowly until thebrakes have regained their normaleffectiveness.

Under wet road conditions you should driveat a lower speed than on dry roads due topossible slippage of tyres during braking.When driving on icy, snowcovered, ormuddy roads, reduce your speed and avoidsudden acceleration, abrupt braking, orsharp steering movements.

Snow ChainsIf you must use snow chains to increasetyre traction, observe the followingprecautions:

• Choose a safe place away from trafficto install the chains.

• When installing the chains carefullyfollow the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Install the chains on the front tyres.• With the chains on, drive only at slow

and moderate speeds.

• If Your Vehicle Gets StuckIf your vehicle gets stuck in snow, mud,or sand, follow the directions below:

1) Change back and forth between aforward range (or first gear for manualtransmission) and reverse. This willcreate a rocking motion which may giveyou enough momentum to free thevehicle. Press gently on the acceleratorto keep wheel spin to a minimum.

Braking1. Use the parking brake when parking

your vehicle and shift the gear shift leverinto the first gear or reverse gearposition for the sake of safety.

2. Don’t use handbraking unlessunavoidable. It causes the vehicle to skidand a rearend collision occur. It is

especially dangerous when the tyres areworn, for they allow a larger skid.

Use foot brake in three stages

(1) Warn the vehicle behind you(2) Gradually apply the brake.(3) Bring the vehicle to a halt.

3. When driving on a downhill, try not toapply the brake but use the enginebrake effectively. Overuse of thefootbrake may result in total brakefailure.

4. Avoid reckless high speed driving and tryto drive at a safe speed suitable for theroad conditions while maintaining aconstant speed.

5. The higher the speed, the narrower thedriver’s visual range becomes. In sucha state, it is difficult to anticipate anyhazard and the driver feels muchfatigued.

6. Never do sharp handling during highspeed driving. You will lose your controlover your vehicle.

7. When overtaking or changing the lanewhile driving at a high speed, keep anample vehicle-to-vehicle distance.

Long distance driving1. Be sure to perform safety checks before

starting a trip.

2. Take rest at certain intervals to preventan accident which may occur when youare sleepy or tired.

Night time driving1. Drive more slowly at night than in the

daytime, for the visual range is restrictedat night.

3. Don’t use the high headlight beamunless its use is inevitable. Its dazzlemay blitz the driver of the oncomingvehicle, thus causing an accident.

4. Always keep the window glasses clean.Don’t operate the windshield wiper whenthe windshield glass is dry or the wiperblade and glass may get damaged.

MARGIN FOR SAFETY

It is important to allow yourself a margin forsafety during driving so that you can copewith erroneous or unexpected driving ofother drivers. For that, observe the following.

• Drive at a safe speed.• Maintain a sufficient distance between

your vehicle and the vehicle ahead.• Don’t force yourself to overtake other

When the engine is running, keephands, hair, clothing, tools, etc. awayfrom the fan and drive belt. Eventhough the fan may not be moving, itcan automatically turn on withoutwarning.

Make sure the drive belt tension is correct.If the belt is too loose, insufficient batterycharging, engine overheating, or excessivebelt wear can result. When you press thebelt with your thumb midway between thepulleys, the belt deflection should be withinthe specification below.

ENGINE OIL AND FILTER

Oil Level CheckIt is important to keep the engine oil at thecorrect level for proper lubrication of yourvehicle’s engine. Check the oil level with thevehicle on a level surface. The oil levelindication may be inaccurate if the vehicleis on a slope. The oil level should bechecked either before starting the engine orat least five minutes after stopping theengine.

Pull out the oil dipstick, wipe oil off with aclean cloth, insert the dipstick all the wayinto the engine, then remove it again. Theoil on the stick should be between the upperand lower limits shown on the stick. If theoil level indication is near the lower limit,add enough oil to raise the level to theupper limit.

Specified oilBe sure that the engine oil you use comesunder the API classification of SF, SG orSH. Select the appropriate oil viscosityaccording to the above chart.

RefillingRemove the oil filler cap and pour oil slowlythrough the filler hole to bring the oil levelto the upper limit on the dipstick. Be carefulnot to overfill. Too much oil is almost asbad as too little oil. After refilling, start theengine and allow it to idle for about aminute. Stop the engine, wait for 5 minutesand check the oil level again.

Changing Engine Oil and FilterDrain the engine oil while the engine is stillwarm.1) Remove the oil filler cap.2) Place a drain pan under the drain plug.3) Using the correct spanner remove the

drain plug and drain out the engine oil.

To tighten the oil filter properly, it isimportant to accurately identify theposition at which the filter gasket firstcontacts the mounting surface.

5) Tighten the filter 3/4 turn from the pointof contact with the mounting surface. [orto 1.4 kg-m (10.5 lb-ft)] using an oil filterwrench.

To prevent oil leakage, make sure thatthe oil filter is tight, but do notovertighten it.

Refill with oil and check for leaks.1) Pour oil through the filler hole and install

the filler cap.For the approximate capacity of the oil,refer to the "CAPACITIES" item in the"SPECIFICATIONS" section.

2) Start the engine and look carefully forleaks at the oil filter and drain plug. Runthe engine at various speeds for at least5 minutes.

3) Stop the engine and wait for 5 minutes.Check the oil level again and add oil ifnecessary. Check for leaks again.

When replacing the oil filter, it isrecommended that you use a genuineMARUTI replacement filter.

Oil leaks from around the oil filter ordrain plug indicate incorrectinstallation or gasket damage. If youfind any leaks or are not sure that thefilter has been properly tightened,have the vehicle inspected by yourMARUTI dealer.

Gear oil level checkTo check the gear oil level, use thefollowing procedure:1) Park the vehicle on a level surface with

the parking brake applied.2) Clean casing around oil filler plug to

3) Feel the inside of the hole with yourfinger. If the oil level comes up to thebottom of the plug hole, the oil level iscorrect. If so, reinstall the plug.

4) If the oil level is low, add gear oilthrough the filler plug hole 1 until theoil level reaches the bottom of the fillerhole, then reinstall the plug.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID

To check the fluid level:1) Park your vehicle on level ground.2) Apply the parking brake and then start

the engine in “P” (Park). Let it idle fortwo minutes and keep it running duringthe fluid level check.

3) With your foot on the brake pedal, movethe selector lever through each gear,pausing for about three seconds in eachrange. Then move it back to the “P”(Park) position.

Be sure to depress the brake pedalwhen moving the selector lever, or thevehicle can move suddenly.

4) Remove the dipstick, clean it and pushit back in until the cap seats, Pull outthe dipstick and read the fluid level.

The fluid level should be between thetwo marks in the “HOT” range on thedipstick.

Specified FluidUse an automatic transmission fluidequivalent to DEXRON®-IIE or DEXRON®-III.

Fluid Level Check

Driving with too much or too littlefluid can damage the transmission.

You must check the fluid level with theautomatic transmission fluid at normaloperating temperature.

To warm up the transmission fluid, drive thevehicle or idle the engine until thetemperature gauge indicates normaloperating temperature, then drive for tenmore minutes.

NOTE:Do not check the fluid level if you have justdriven the vehicle for a long time at highspeed, if you have driven in city traffic inhot weather, or if the vehicle has beenpulling a trailer. Wait until the fluid coolsdown (about 30 minutes), or the fluid levelindication will not be correct.

5) Add just enough specified fluid throughthe dipstick hole to fill the transmissionto the proper level. It takes only 0.35litres to raise the level from “LOW HOT”to “FULL HOT”.

After checking or adding oil, be sureto insert the dipstick securely.

Changing OilSince special procedures, materials, andtools are required to change the automatictransmission oil, it is recommended that youtrust this job to your authorized MARUTIdealer.

ENGINE COOLANT

Adding CoolantIf the Coolant level is below the “LOW”mark, more coolant should be added.Remove the reservoir tank cap and addcoolant until the reservoir tank level reachesthe “FULL” mark. Never fill the reservoirtank above the “FULL” mark.

• When adding or replacing coolant,use a high quality ethylene glycolantifreeze and anticorrosion (Non-Amine type) diluted with distilledwater. If the lowest ambienttemperature in your area is expectedto be -15 0C (50F) or above, make theantifreeze concentration of themixture you use at least 30% but nomore than 50%. If -16 0C (30F) orbelow, make the concentration atleast 50%. If the 50% concentrationdoes not provide adequateprotection against freezing, followthe instructions on the antifreezecontainer to obtain the desiredfreezing point.

• When putting the cap on thereservoir tank, line up the arrow onthe cap and the arrow on the tank,or coolant can leak out.

Coolant Level CheckCheck the coolant level at the reservoirtank, not at the radiator. With the enginecool, the coolant level should be betweenthe “FULL” and “LOW” marks.

Coolant ReplacementIf your radiator has a drain plug as shown,perform this job as follows. If not, trust thisjob to your MARUTI dealer as the radiatorlower hose must be disconnected fordraining.1) When the engine is cool, remove the

radiator cap by turning it slowly to theleft until a “stop” is felt. Do not pressdown while turning the cap. Wait untilany pressure is released, then pressdown on the cap and continue turningit anticlockwise.

It is dangerous to remove the radiatorcap when the water temperature ishigh, because scalding fluid andsteam may be blown out underpressure. Wait until the coolanttemperature has lowered beforeremoving the cap.

2) Remove the reservoir tank cap. Removethe reservoir by lifting it up, and drainthe reservoir completely by pouring thecoolant in to a suitable container.

3) Loosen the drain plug attached to thelower part of the radiator and drain thecoolant into a suitable container.

4) Tighten the drain plug on the radiator,fill the radiator with coolant and installthe radiator cap.

5) Refit the reservoir and fill it with thecorrect coolant to the “FULL” line. Refitthe reservoir tank cap, ensuring thearrows are correctly aligned.

The coolant must be replaced with thevehicle on level ground.

WINDSCREEN WASHER FLUID

The air cleaner element should bereplaced every 40,000 km. Morefrequent replacement is necessarywhen you drive under dustyconditions.

Check that there is washer fluid in the tank.Refill it if necessary. Use a good qualitywindscreen washer fluid, diluted with wateras necessary.

Do not use “antifreeze” solution in thewindscreen washer reservoir. This canseverely impair visibility when sprayedon the windscreen, and can alsodamage your vehicle’s paint.

Damage may result if the washermotor is operated whilst the fluid orfluid nozzles are frozen or with nofluid in the washer tank.

• Never use spark plugs with thewrong thread size or length.

When replacing spark plugs, youshould use the brand and typespecified for your vehicle. For thespecified plugs, refer to the“SPECIFICATIONS” section at the endof this book.

You should inspect spark plugs periodicallyfor carbon deposits. When carbonaccumulates on a spark plug, a strong sparkmay not be produced. Remove carbondeposits with a wire or pin and adjust thespark plug gap.

• When disconnecting the spark plugcables, pull on the boot, not on thecable itself. Pulling on the cable candamage it.

Brake PedalCheck if the brake pedal stops at theregular height without "spongy" feeling whenyou depress it. If not, have the brakesystem inspected by your MARUTI dealer.If you doubt the brake pedal for the regularheight, check it as follows:

With the engine running, measure thedistance between the brake pedal and floorwall when the pedal is depressed withapproximately 30 kg (66 lbs) of force. Theminimum distance required is 90 mm (3.5in). Since your vehicle’s brake system isself-adjusting, there is no need for pedaladjustment. If the pedal to floor walldistance as measured above is less than

the minimum distance required, have yourvehicle inspected by your MARUTI dealer.

NOTE:When measuring the distance between thebrake pedal and floor wall, be sure not toinclude any floor covering in themeasurement.

Check the play of the steering wheel bygently turning it from left to right andmeasuring the distance that it moves beforeyou feel slight resistance. The play shouldbe between 0 – 30 mm (0.0 – 1.2 in).

Check that the steering wheel turns easilyand smoothly without rattling by turning itall the way to the right and to the left whiledriving very slowly in an open area. If theamount of free play is outside thespecification or you find anything else to bewrong, an inspection must be performed byyour MARUTI dealer.

1) Measure the air pressure with a tyregauge. Adjust the pressure if necessary.

To avoid harm to yourself or damageto your vehicle or battery, follow thejump starting instructions in theEMERGENCY SERVICE section of thismanual if it is necessary to jump startyour vehicle.

The level of the battery solution must bekept between the “UPPER” and the“LOWER” level lines at all times. If the levelis found to be below the “LOWER” levelline, add distilled water to the “UPPER” levelline. You should periodically check thebattery, battery terminals, and battery hold-down bracket for corrosion. Removecorrosion using a stiff brush and ammoniamixed with water, or baking soda mixed withwater. After removing corrosion, rinse withclean water.

If your vehicle is not going to be driven fora month or longer, disconnect the cablefrom the negative terminal of the battery tohelp prevent discharge.

3) Jack up the vehicle (follow the jackinginstructions in the EMERGENCYSERVICE section in this manual)

4) Remove the wheel nuts and wheel.

5) Install the new wheel and replace thewheel nuts with their cone shaped endfacing the wheel. Tighten each nutsnugly by hand until the wheel issecurely seated on the hub.

6) Lower the jack and fully tighten the nuts[4.0 – 7.0 kg-m (28.9 – 50.5 lb-ft)] in acrisscross fashion with a wrench asshown in the illustration.

BATTERY

Batteries produce flammable hydrogengas. Keep flames and sparks awayfrom the battery or an explosion mayoccur. Never smoke when working inthe vicinity of the battery .

When checking or servicing thebattery, disconnect the negative cable.Be careful not to cause a short circuitby allowing metal objects to contactthe battery posts and the vehicle atthe same time.

BULB REPLACEMENT

• Light bulbs can be hot enough toburn your finger right after beingturned off. This is true especially forhalogen headlight bulbs. Replacethe bulbs after they become coolenough.

• The headlight bulbs are filled withpressurized halogen gas. They canburst and injure you if they are hitor dropped. Handle them carefully.

The oils from your skin may cause ahalogen bulb to overheat and burstwhen the lights are on. Grasp a newbulb with a clean cloth.

Frequent replacement of a bulbindicates the need for an inspection ofthe electrical system. This should becarried out by your MARUTI dealer.

JACKING INSTRUCTIONS

Do not put the jack head on to thelateral rod, or the lateral rod will bedamaged.

6) Continue to raise the jack slowly andsmoothly until the tyre clears the ground.Do not raise the vehicle more thannecessary.

• Use the jack only to change wheels.• Never jack up the vehicle on an

inclined surface.• Never raise the vehicle with the jack

in a location other than the placespecified in the illustration near thewheel to be changed.

• Make sure that the jack is raised atleast 2 inches (51 mm) before itcontacts the vehicle. Use of the jackwhen it is within 2 inches of beingfully collapsed may result in failureof the jack.

1) Park the vehicle securely on hard levelground.

2) Choke the front and rear wheeldiagonally opposite the wheel to bechanged.

3) Switch on the hazard warning flasher ifyour vehicle is in or near traffic.

4) Slacken but do not remove wheel nutson the wheel to be changed.

5) Position the jack vertically and raise thejack by turning the jack handle clockwiseuntil the jack head fits the frontsuspension arm or the rear axle asshown overleaf.

• Never get under the vehicle when itis supported by the jack.

• Never run the engine when thevehicle is supported by the jack andnever allow passengers to remain inthe vehicle.

JUMP STARTING INSTRUCTIONS

• Never attempt to jump start yourvehicle if the battery appears to befrozen. Batteries in this conditionmay explode or rupture if jumpstarting is attempted.

• When making jump leadconnections, be certain that yourhands and the jump leads remainclear from pulleys, belts, or fans.

• Batteries produce flammablehydrogen gas. Keep flames andsparks away from the battery or anexplosion may occur. Never smokewhen working in the vicinity of thebattery.

• If the booster battery you use forjump starting is installed in anothervehicle, make sure the two vehiclesare not touching each other.

• If your battery dischargesrepeatedly, for no apparent reason,have your vehicle inspected by anauthorized MARUTI dealer.

• To avoid harm to yourself ordamage to your vehicle or battery,follow the jump starting instructionsbelow precisely and in order. If youare in doubt, call for qualified roadservice.

Vehicle equipped with electronic fuelinjection system will not start bypushing or towing as the fuel pumpwill not work in this condition. Thisstarting method could also result inpermanent damage to the catalyticconverter. Use jump leads to start avehicle with a weak or flat battery.

When jump starting your vehicle, use thefollowing procedure:1) Use only a 12 volt battery to jump start

your vehicle. Position the good 12Vbattery close to your vehicle so that thejump leads will reach both batteries.When using a battery installed onanother vehicle, DO NOT LET THEVEHICLES TOUCH. Apply the parkingbrakes fully on both vehicles.

2) Turn off all vehicle accessories, exceptthose necessary for safety reasons (forexample, headlights or hazard lights).

3) Make jump lead connections as follows:

a) Connect one end of the first jumplead to the positive (+) terminal of theflat battery.

b) Connect the other end to the positive(+) terminal of the booster battery.

c) Connect one end of the second jumplead to the negative (-) terminal ofthe booster battery.

d) Make the final connection to anunpainted, heavy metal part of theengine of the vehicle with the flatbattery.

Never connect the jump lead directlyto the negative (-) terminal of thedischarged battery, or an explosionmay occur.

4) If the booster battery you are using isfitted to another vehicle, start the engineof the vehicle with the booster battery.Run the engine at moderate speed.

5) Start the engine of the vehicle with theflat battery.

6) Remove the jump leads in the exactreverse order in which you connectedthem.

TOWING

If you need to have your vehicle towed,contact a professional service.

To help avoid damage to your vehicleduring towing, proper equipment andtowing procedures must be used.

Automatic TransmissionYour vehicle may be towed from the frontwith the front wheels lifted, or from the rearwith the rear wheels lifted and a dolly underthe front wheels. Before towing, make surethat the parking brake is released.

Towing your vehicle with the frontwheels on the ground can result indamage to the automatic transmission.

Manual TransmissionWhenever possible, your vehicle should betowed from the front with the front wheelslifted. If the steering and drivetrain are ingood condition, your vehicle may be towedfrom the rear with the rear wheels lifted andthe front wheels on the ground. Beforetowing, make sure the steering is unlockedand the transmission is in neutral.

EMERGENCY REMEDIES

If the Engine OverheatsThe engine could overheat temporarily undersevere driving conditions. If the enginecoolant temperature gauge indicatesoverheating during driving:

1) Turn off the air conditioner, if equipped.

2) Take the vehicle to a safe place andpark.

3) Let the engine run at normal idle speedfor a few minutes until the indicator iswithin the normal, acceptabletemperature range between “H” and “C”.

If you see or hear escaping steam,stop the vehicle in a safe place andimmediately turn off the engine to letit cool. Do not open the bonnet whensteam is present. When the steam canno longer be seen or heard, open thehood to see if the coolant is stillboiling. If it is, you must wait until itstops boiling before you proceed.

If the Starter Does Not Operate:1) Try turning the ignition switch to the

“START” position with the headlightsturned on to determine the batterycondition. If the headlights go excessivelydim or go off, it usually means thateither the battery is flat or the batteryterminal contact is poor. Recharge thebattery or correct battery terminal contactas necessary.

2) If the headlights remain bright, check thefuses. If the reason for failure of thestarter is not obvious, there may be amajor electrical problem. Have thevehicle inspected by your authorizedMARUTI dealer.

If the Engine is FloodedIf the engine is flooded with petrol, it maybe hard to start. If this happens, press theaccelerator pedal all the way to the floorand hold it there while cranking the engine.(Do not operate the starter motor for morethan 5 seconds). Release the accelerator assoon as the engine has started.

If the temperature indication does not comedown to within the normal, acceptablerange:

1) Turn off the engine and check that thewater pump belt and pulleys are notdamaged or slipping. If any abnormalityis found, correct it.

2) Check the coolant level in the reservoir.If it is found to be lower than the “LOW”line, look for leaks at the radiator, waterpump, and radiator and heater hoses. Ifyou locate any leaks that may havecaused the overheating, do not run theengine until these problems have beencorrected.

3) If you do not find a leak, carefully addcoolant to the reservoir and then theradiator, if necessary. (Refer to “ENGINECOOLANT” in the “INSPECTION ANDMAINTENANCE” section.)

It is dangerous to remove the radiatorcap when the water temperature ishigh, because scalding fluid andsteam may be blown out underpressure. The cap should only betaken off when the coolanttemperature has lowered.

In case of vehicle break-down or duringemergency stopping where your vehiclecould become a potential traffic hazard,please keep the warning triangle, providedwith your vehicle, on the pathway (road)behind the vehicle so as to warn theapproaching traffic, at an approximatedistance of 5-15 m, such that reflecting sideof the triangle faces the rear. Pleaseactivate the hazard warning lamps beforealighting the vehicle to keep the warningtriangle.

CORROSION PREVENTION

This information illustrates the necessity ofkeeping your vehicle (particularly theunderbody) as clean and dry as possible.It is equally important to repair any damageto the paint or protective coatings as soonas possible.

How to Help Prevent Corrosion

Wash your vehicle frequentlyThe best way to preserve the finish on yourvehicle and to help avoid corrosion is tokeep it clean with frequent washing.Wash your vehicle regularly during thewinter and immediately after the winter.Keep your vehicle, particularly the underside,as clean and dry as possible.If you frequently drive on salted roads, yourvehicle should be washed at least once amonth during the winter. If you live near theocean, your vehicle should be washed atleast once a month throughout the year.For washing instructions, refer to the“VEHICLE CLEANING” section.

Remove foreign material depositsForeign material such as salts, chemicals,road oil or tar, tree sap, bird droppings andindustrial fall-out may damage the finish ofyour vehicle if it is left on painted surfaces.

Remove these types of deposits as quicklyas possible. If these deposits are difficult towash off, an additional cleaner may berequired. Be sure that any cleaner you useis not harmful to painted surfaces and isspecifically intended for your purposes.Follow the manufacturer’s directions whenusing these special cleaners.

Repair finish damageCarefully examine your vehicle for damageto the painted surfaces. Should you find anychips or scratches in the paint, touch themup immediately to prevent corrosion fromstarting. If the chips or scratches have gonethrough to the bare metal, have a qualifiedbody shop make the repair.

Keep Passenger and luggagecompartments clean.Moisture, dirt or mud can accumulate underthe floor mats and may cause corrosion.Occasionally, check under these mats toensure that this area is clean and dry. Morefrequent checks are necessary if the vehicleis used off road or in wet weather.

Certain cargos such as chemicals, fertilizers,cleaners, salts, etc., are extremely corrosiveby nature. These products should betransported in sealed containers. If a spillor leak does occur, clean and dry the areaimmediately.

It is important to take good care of yourvehicle to protect it from corrosion.Listed below are instructions for how tomaintain your vehicle to prevent corrosion.Please read and follow these instructionscarefully.

Important Information About Corrosion

Common causes of corrosion1) Accumulation of road salt, dirt, moisture,

or chemicals in hard to reach areas ofthe vehicle underbody or frame.

2) Chipping, scratches and any damage totreated or painted metal surfacesresulting from minor accidents orabrasion by stones and gravel.

Environmental conditions whichaccelerate corrosion1) Road salt, dust control chemicals, sea air

or industrial pollution will all acceleratethe corrosion of metal.

2) High humidity will increase the rate ofcorrosion particularly when thetemperature range is just above thefreezing point.

3) Moisture in certain areas of a vehicle foran extended period of time may promotecorrosion even though other bodysections may be completely dry.

Store your vehicle in a dry, well-ventilated area.Do not park your vehicle in a damp, poorlyventilated area. If you often wash yourvehicle in the garage or if you frequentlydrive it in when wet, your garage may bedamp. The high humidity in the garage maycause or accelerate corrosion. A wet vehiclemay corrode even in a heated garage if theventilation is poor.

Do not apply additional undercoatingor rust preventive coating on oraround exhaust system componentssuch as the exhaust pipes, etc. A firecould be started if the undercoatingsubstance becomes overheated.

Cover your vehicleIf you cannot regularly park your vehicle ina garage, we recommend you use a vehiclecover. Years of exposure to midday sun cancause the colours in paint, plastic parts, andfabrics to fade. Covering your vehicle witha high-quality, “breathable” vehicle cover canhelp protect the finish from the harmful UVrays in sunlight, and can reduce the amountof dust and air pollution reaching thesurface.

VEHICLE CLEANING

cleaner for tougher stains. If you use afabric cleaner, carefully follow themanufacturer’s instructions and precautions.

Seat BeltsClean seat belts with a mild soap andwater. Do not use bleach or dye on thebelts. They may weaken the fabric in thebelts.

Vinyl floor matsOrdinary dirt can be removed from vinyl withwater or mild soap. Use a brush to helploosen dirt. After the dirt is loosened, rinsethe mat thoroughly with water and dry it inthe shade.

CarpetsRemove dirt and soil as much as possiblewith a vacuum cleaner. Using a mild soapsolution, rub stained areas with a cleandamp cloth. To remove soap, rub the areasagain with a cloth dampened with water.Repeat this until the stain is removed, oruse a commercial carpet cleaner for tougherstains. If you use a carpet cleaner, carefullyfollow the manufacturer’s instructions andprecautions.

When cleaning the interior or exteriorof the vehicle, NEVER USE flammablesolvents such as lacquer thinners,petrol, benzene or cleaning materialssuch as bleach or strong householddetergents. The materials could causepersonal injury or damage to thevehicle.

Cleaning the Interior

Vinyl upholsteryPrepare a solution of soap or mild detergentmixed with warm water. Apply the solutionto the vinyl with a sponge or soft cloth andlet it soak for a few minutes to loosen dirt.Rub the surface with a clean, damp clothto remove dirt and the soap solution. Ifsome dirt still remains on the surface, repeatthis procedure.

Fabric upholsteryRemove loose dirt with a vacuum cleaner.Using a mild soap solution, rub stainedareas with a clean damp cloth. To removesoap, rub the areas again with a clothdampened with water. Repeat this until thestain is removed, or use a commercial fabric

Cleaning the Exterior

It is important that your vehicle bekept clean and free from dirt. Failureto keep your vehicle clean may resultin fading of the paint or corrosion tovarious parts of the vehicle body.

Washing

• Never attempt to wash and waxyour vehicle with the enginerunning.

• When cleaning the underside of thebody and fender, where there maybe sharp-edged parts, you shouldwear gloves and a longsleeved shirtto protect your hands and armsfrom being cut.

• After washing your vehicle, carefullytest the brakes before driving tomake sure they have maintainedtheir normal effectiveness.

When washing the vehicle, follow theinstructions below:

1) Flush the underside of body and wheelhousings with pressurized water toremove mud and debris. Use plenty ofwater.

When washing the vehicle, avoiddirecting steam or hot water of morethan 80 0C (1760F) on plastic parts.

2) Remove dirt and mud from the bodyexterior with running water. You may usea soft sponge or brush. Do not use hardmaterials which can scratch the paint.

3) Wash the entire exterior with a milddetergent or car wash soap using asponge or soft cloth. The sponge orcloth should be frequently soaked in thesoap solution.

When using a commercial car washproduct, observe the cautionsspecified by the manufacturer. Neveruse strong household detergents orsoaps.

4) Once the dirt has been completelyremoved, rinse off the detergent withrunning water.

5) After rinsing, wipe off the vehicle bodywith a wet chamois or cloth and allowit to dry in the shade.

6) Check carefully for damage to paintedsurfaces. If there is any damage,“Touchup” the damage following theprocedure below:

a) Clean all damaged spots and allowthem to dry.

b) Stir the paint and “touchup” thedamaged spots lightly using a smallbrush.

c) Allow the paint to dry completely.

WaxingAfter washing the vehicle, waxing andpolishing are recommended to furtherprotect and beautify the paint.• Only use waxes and polishes of good

quality.• When using waxes and polishes,

observe the precautions specified by themanufacturers.
