coe Welcome and conference introduction
Keith horton, coe presidentThe Nordam Group
COE President, Keith Horton, kicks off the COE 2012 Annual PLM Conference & TechniFair by introducing the conference
highlights and discussing the ways COE is helping users get the most out of their DS solutions.
Keynote speaKer: developing the first-ever roadable aircraft: a vehicle engineer’s perspective
ben ZelnickTerrafugia, Inc.
Terrafugia has been developing the Transition Roadable Aircraft in Massachusetts since early 2006. The company’s unique approach
to improving the accessibility to general aviation has continued to gain traction since that time. They’ve gone from a small group of five founders to building and flying their Proof-of-Concept Vehicle in 2009, to currently testing two production prototypes. Production and deliveries will begin in late 2012 for their growing list of approximately one hundred depositors. Terrafugia chose to implement Dassault Systèmes (DS) CATIA software with the composites design workbench (CPD), advanced fiber modeler plug-in and integrated mesher and static solver (FAX) to direct structural design changes between the Proof-of-Concept and the Production Prototypes. Creating both a certified Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) and a street legal car, Terrafugia faces the challenge of adhering to the low gross weight that the FAA requires of a LSA, as well as meeting the Federal automobile crash and safety guidelines. This presentation will discuss how the company utilized these DS
2012 General session & keynote speakers
tools to establish an initial light-weight carbon fiber laminate scheme for the passenger cabin of the Transition Roadable Aircraft to meet the Federal frontal crash standards.
executive presentation and Welcome
al bunshaft, managing directorDassault Systèmes North America
This presentation will feature the vision, strategy, and contribution possible to COE member companies when
engaging the current Dassault Systèmes Product offerings and Solutions. This session will also introduce selected V6 implementations that have significantly increasing value with product lifecycle management throughout those organizations.
executive technology updateetienne droit, ceo, catiaDassault Systèmes
In today’s world, sustainable development is no longer an option. This compelling necessity is driving companies around the globe to
create a constant stream of innovative and inspiring smart products that meet the societal shift we are experiencing. Discover why and how combining the digital mock-up and functional mock-up approaches within the Digital Product Experience is setting a new level of performance for you, as users, to transform and increase your capacity to deliver innovation in a sustainable way. This session will explore how early customers are already implementing these new product development processes through selected use cases. Demonstrating CATIA’s leadership for smart, intuitive, and attractive product creation, it will delve into how CATIA leverages Dassault Systèmes’ Version 6 Experience platform to deliver unique, high value user experiences.

Why move to v6jim strawn Cessna Aircraft
Given the current stability and functionality of CATIA V5, why would a company want to move to V6? The underlying business structure
of multiple PDM systems, CAD Management Systems, Document Management Systems and multiple disconnected systems leads to inefficiencies, multiple data entry and inflexibility when attempting to implement new business models. This presentation will discuss the business drivers that lead to the necessity of implementing V6.
the giZa archives projectal bunshaft, managing director Dassault Systèmes North America
Today, you can digitally model almost anything with lifelike realism – test it, try it, optimize it – all before it exists physically. From sitting in a virtual car to planning traffic flows, from choreographing maintenance operations to planning and enhancing the retail store experience, digital online 3D is transforming the virtual world into a lifelike experience. The Giza Archives project is a partnership between Dassault Systèmes and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, which utilizes historic archaeological data to create real-time, 3D computer models of this information including tombs, temples, and pyramids, complete with animated avatars. This revolutionary combination of old and new technologies is forming a 21st century interface for new avenues of archaeological research, teaching, and even “edu-tourism.” Al Bunshaft will discuss “The Giza Archives Project”, an international collaboration to create a fully immersive, real-time 3D virtual environment of the archaeology of the Giza Plateau, just west of modern Cairo, leveraging technologies from Dassault Systèmes.

process sessionsChoose the education path that best suits your needs as a Dassault Systèmes PLM solutions user.
For your convenience, COE organizes all educational and technical sessions into various community tracks, making it easier for you to customize your learning experience by selecting the curriculum that best meets your needs and interests. Within these tracks are technical sessions relevant to current industry “hot topics” as identified by COE’s Conference Planning Committee, the members of which are all practicing professionals who are “making it work” everyday using Dassault Systèmes PLM solutions.
Descriptions of each “hot topic” and just a few of the many breakout sessions offered at this year’s conference are listed below. Please refer to the conference pages of COE’s Website for session updates and complete details as they become available.

engineering analysis and simulation
Breakout sessions included in the EAS track are focused on the processes, methods, and tools for modeling and synthesis of engineering systems and for engineering analysis and simulation of products. Typical sessions describe end-user scenarios of how realistic simulations are developed to depict a product’s physical behavior including static, dynamic, mechanical, and thermal operating-load environments, as well as the performance of ergonomic studies for a product’s assembly, operation, and maintenance. Techniques that are covered include finite element analysis of structural components, fluid dynamics, kinematics, multi-body dynamics, multi-disciplined optimization of a product’s shape, performance, cost, and knowledge-based engineering as related to the functional performance of a product. Best practices are shared for virtually simulating and optimizing products by accommodating multiple concurrent, and generally conflicting, operational requirements of a product.

information management
The Information Management track relates to how any type of data is stored and utilized in any system by means of processes and/or tools:
• information & data management (idm) - Comprises of data storage and sharing methods and tools such as vaults and PLM systems.
• collaboration (col) - Utilizes data real-time by working and communicating with others from within the same office area to across the world by means of processes and tools.
• data exchange & migration (dem) - Addresses moving data to different locations and migrating data between different CAD and other software systems.
• service after sale (sas) - Relates to customer needs regarding access to pertinent parts of product information, which will then drive a “shelf like” requirement. The goal is enhancing customer satisfaction by providing the right data at the right time, utilizing the most efficient method.
• legacy data (ld) - Involves data retention that could last for many years and the issues or options regarding maintaining the data. Also involves the required systems and processes to access that data or migration of data.
• catalogs & standards (cs) - Addresses how standard parts (or information) in CAD systems is managed, organized, and made accessible to all users across the product lifecycle.

manufacturing
The Manufacturing track will follow your entire manufacturing processes from concurrent product definition to shop floor graphic work instructions. This will allow manufacturers in any industry to virtually define, plan, create, monitor and control all production processes. Our topics focus on solving your challenges, whether it’s an implementation on a large scale or generating, simulating, and optimizing tool paths from various domain experts. We will explore these experiences and technologies using Dassault Systèmes Manufacturing Lifecycle Management (MLM).

test your catia modeling sKills in top gun xxv competition!A traditional COE Annual PLM Conference & TechniFair highlight, TOP GUN is a competition for the “Best of the Best” CATIA engineers and designers to test their skills at developing the most accurate and correctly-structured three dimensional model, in the least amount of time.
The purpose of TOP GUN is to:
• Demonstrate variation in CATIA model quality
• Demonstrate variation in CATIA modeling techniques
• Provide the opportunity for a COE attendee to earn the annual bragging rights as the “Best CATIA Modeler”
This year’s competition will allow competitors to test their skills using V5 and V6. Sign up will be available at the conference. Great prizes are awarded to the winners. See the COE NewsNet Daily or the conference Web page onsite for locations and times. There is no cost to enter.
