Pavilion inspired by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer

Located on the world-famous Ipanema Beach in an impressive 300m2 pavilion, the Heart of Denmark pavilion has been designed as a tent construction composed of four sections of metal profiles covered in white canvas. The four structures are connected by a transparent acrylic cross - a clear reference to the Danish flag - and will be illuminated at night. Its open spaces permit natural light and ventilation to flow and provide spectacular ocean views. In addition, the Heart of Denmark pavilion will also feature an associated 75m2 playground by Danish toy manufacturer LEGO.

Designed by acclaimed Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen Architects, who also designed Copenhagen’s iconic Opera House and the new Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus, the pavilion’s simple, light and bright expression is a reference to Nordic architecture and design and to Denmark’s maritime history. The design was also inspired by Rio de Janeiro’s hilly landscape and pays tribute to Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. They say that the Danes are the happiest people in the world, so come along and join us and find out why!

From Vikings to Bike kings

Often referred to as “a nation of cyclists”, the Danes are known for their urban cycling culture, eco-conscious lifestyle, modern arts and design, and some of the best cuisine the globe has to offer. The urban cycling culture is a prime example of Denmark’s green lifestyle, with hundreds of kilometers of bike lanes and 55 percent of all Copenhageners commuting by bike. This lifestyle is integral to the day-to-day life in Copenhagen and combined with its numerous green spaces and ecological design has made Copenhagen one of the greenest cities in Europe.

Freewheeling fun at the Heart of Denmark pavilion on Ipanema Beach Danish fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen, once said “to travel is to live”. If Andersen had lived today, he might have said “to cycle is to live”. 9 out of 10 Danes own a bike and the bicycle is the preferred mode of transport in Denmark. Visitors to the Heart of Denmark pavilion will get a chance to experience Danish cycling culture first-hand exploring the cool bicycle exhibition in- and outside the pavilion showcasing the latest innovations and trends in bicycle design.

The Bike Café

Combining two of the Danes’ favourite things; bikes and coffee, the Heart of Denmark pavilion’s Bike Café will be serving up sustainable craft-made specialty coffee from a traditional cargo coffee bike. Promoting the simple pleasures of city life, such as coffee drinking and bike riding, the Bike Café baristas will be serving Brazilian coffee from the Southern part of Minas Gerais in biodegradable cups, and 10 % of their sales will be donated to the urban Brazilian bike project Instituto Aromeiazero.

It can be defined as the art of building sanctuary and community, of paying attention to what makes us feel alive. A feeling of belonging to the moment and celebrating the everyday. It’s in the small rituals that comfort us, make us feel at home. It’s sitting around a table sharing a meal, or beside a fire on a cold and rainy night. It’s cosiness and togetherness and one of the reasons why Denmark is often referred to as the happiest country in the world.

The event is free for all and VisitDenmark and partners hope to inspire visitors to the Danish pavilion with plenty of joyful and memorable hygge experiences on Ipanema Beach in Rio 3-21 August.

Green capital Copenhagen reality tour of Denmark

As one of the world’s most environmentally friendly cities, Copenhagen continues to be on the forefront of environmental and sustainable practices. Denmark’s capital was named Europe’s Green Capital for 2014 by the European Environment Commission after receiving the INDEX: Award 2013. The Index award is the world’s largest design award, and Copenhagen earned the recognition for their climate plan which provides a unique, robust and pro-active framework for a massive influx of sustainable design solutions in the future. Denmark’s capital is also a frontrunner when it comes to the environment and plans to become the world’s first CO2 neutral capital by 2025, having developed a lifestyle that puts eco-friendly living and thinking at its core – from the clean waterways and bicycle culture, to eco-friendly hotels, and farm-to-table cuisine.

Green from the Ground Up

Denmark has always been progressive in environmental preservation, and in 1973 it was the first country in the world to implement an environmental law. Ever since, the environment has played a large part in city planning. In fact, Denmark aims to become the world’s first country entirely independent of fossil fuels by 2050. Copenhagen is also

#heartofdenmark | visitdenmark.com/ipanema2016VisitDenmark

the first city in Scandinavia to have a mandatory green roof policy – making vegetation and soil a mandatory obligation in planning new developments. In various respects, Copenhagen is a role model for many of the world’s big cities when it comes to sustainable town development.

Cycling Culture

Another example of Copenhagen’s green and sustainable society is the well-known biking culture which is made accessible with cycle routes covering the city. With over a hundred miles of bike lanes and 45 percent of all Copenhagener’s commuting daily by bike, the Danes are known for their iconic cycling culture. Copenhagen was the first city in the world to be named the official ‘Bike City’ by the International Cycling Union, and there are up to 40,000 cyclists crossing Queen Louise’s Bridge daily. As a visitor to the city, it’s easy to saddle up and cycle with the flow thanks to bike tours led by locals including Bike Mike Tours, Cycling Copenhagen, and GPS-guided excursions with Bike the City.

Renowned Farm-To-Table Dining

The environmental friendly ambitions of the city are also reflected in the farm-to-table dining scene throughout Scandinavia’s gourmet capital. With more than 60% of the land in Denmark cultivated for farming, eating

locally is second nature for the Danes, and delicious locavore cuisine is available at a wide range of eateries across the city. Restaurants like Michelin-starred Noma and Geranium, pioneered the New Nordic movement, which lies in the concept of local, seasonal ingredients. Other gastronomic hotspots like BioM ensure everything is environmentally friendly, from its recycled plastic chairs to organic wall paint and candles, while the organic hot dog stand, Døp, serves organic sausages for fast food without compromising on high quality.

Capital of Sustainable Meetings

Copenhagen is known as the ‘Capital of Sustainable Meetings’, not only due to its impressive range of eco-certified hotels and venues, but also because of the city’s green profile on the whole. The largest convention center in Denmark, Bella Center, has recently invested millions in energy-saving measures and has a massive wind turbine in its backyard, marking a focus for Denmark on wind energy as the most important renewable energy source. The conference centre also has protected green areas right outside the doorstep, and is Green Key certified, a globally recognized label, which started in Denmark, requiring leisure organisations to meet criteria in the areas of policy, action plans, education and communication, as well as the regular environmental demands of a hotel.

A Gastronomic Hotspot Denmark is Scandinavia’s gourmet capital, with this year’s Michelin Guide awarding a total of 26 stars to 22 restaurants across the country - a record number of stars for Denmark and the most for any Scandinavian country. Denmark offers a range of dining experiences from bistros to brasseries to fine dining restaurants such as the cutting-edge noma in Copenhagen, named No. 1 on the San Pellegrino “World’s 50 Best Restaurants” list several times, and Geranium, a 100 percent organic restaurant which has a Bocuse d’Or Gold winning chef in the kitchen. Visitors to the Heart of Denmark pavilion will get their appetite whet and discover why food is such an important part of Danish culture.

The Danish pavilion will be packed with innovative and interactive exhibitions and exciting activities, games, competitions and events showcasing the very best of Danish culture, lifestyle, food and design.

Play, movement and cultural experiences bring people together and serve as a source of innovation and creativity. Meanwhile, hobbies have been proven to boost levels of wellbeing and improving quality of life, and many Danes combine individual passions and pursuits with a feeling of community by doing them as part of a club or association – whether it is singing in a choir or joining a football team. At the Heart of Denmark pavilion, VisitDenmark and partners invite visitors to take part in a variety of games, competitions and fun and interactive events during this summer’s most prestigious sport event.

Building a LEGO® bike brick by brick: 6-7 August 12pm-8pm
