World War 2
Saturday 10th November 10.30am Ringwood Cemetery
A short service of Remembrance, lead by the British Legion and
Councillors, when Poppy Crosses are laid on the graves of
service personnel whose last resting place is in Ringwood.
All Welcome.
With the agreement and support of the Town Council and to mark the Centenary the Remembrance Day service will be held in Ringwood Market Square beginning at 10am.
A marquee and seating will be provided. The Salvation Army band will provide the music and the service will be ecumenical and open to everyone. At 10.30am a procession will leave the Market Square to arrive at War Memorial in good time for the Maroon at 11am signalling start of National 2 Minutes Silence - the Last Post and Reveille will be sounded, after which there will be the opportunity to lay wreaths and tributes. There will be a return procession to the market square for those who wish to join in. Those who do not wish to process to the War Memorial will be able to stay in the Market Square where the last post and silence will be kept and after the reveille the Bells of the Parish Church will be rung.
Lest we forget
We who have not suffered the reality of war and don’t enjoy
the eloquence of men such as Wilfred Owen or Rupert Brooke
cannot perhaps express the experiences of the 1914 – 18
conflict as they did.
We can however recognise the sacrifice of the many people
who have given their lives in armed service then and indeed in
all wars. In the Great War 111 mainly young Ringwood men
from a 1914 population much less than half of today’s total
were killed in action. Their family names recorded on the War
Memorial can still often be heard in and around Ringwood and
their descendants along with the rest of us can be proud of
their history.
This programme is designed to celebrate their memory with
an excellent collage of entertaining, informative and evocative
events which I know the people of Ringwood will
wholeheartedly support.
Funds raised will ensure completion of the wonderful
Memorial Lantern which will be a daily reminder of the
gratitude we owe to the memory of all those men and women
who gave their lives for our benefit.
Do come along and enjoy one, another or perhaps all of these
shows – I look forward to seeing you there and of course at
the Remembrance Day service and parade at the Market Place
on Sunday 11 November.’
best wishes to all
Tony Ring
Town Mayor.

Ringwood Centenary Lantern Appeal
Objective
To mark the Centenary of the end of WW1 with a permanent
Memorial Lantern, uniquely designed to fit the Town Gateway
Building. It will be lit each day that a member of the armed forces
from our community has died, in past and future conflicts, serving
our country.
In 1914 WW1 started.
In 2014 a lantern (a spare from those used in the high street at
Christmas) was placed on the outside of the Gateway building.
By the end of the war in 1918, 111 Ringwood people had
been killed in active service (53 died in WW2)
In 2018 this unique lantern will recognise their sacrifice.
Fundraising:
£5,000 was needed to complete this project, with all of this being
raised via the generosity of the local community. Over £3,000
has been raised and a further £1,000 has been pledged. The
Lantern is now being made. Please can you help us to meet the
target by making any contribution possible, either at the Gateway
Centre, via BACS, Cheque or cash or via
www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ringwood-lantern
Thank You
Resume: Keeping Up Appearances Set in the early years of the
Great War the play poignantly examines the devastating effects the
war had on the womenfolk left at home whilst their loved ones were
fighting and dying.
After The Flags and Bands: Through the First World War we follow
four women, through letters and monologues, as their good
companionship helps them cope with the devastating events on the
Western Front.
