Motorola’s Medios Multi-Screen Service Management So
here’s been so much discussion of the ability to deliver content to everything from TVs to PCs to mobile devices that one could beforgiven for thinking it’s a ubiquitous service. Not quite.
The commercialization of multi-screen delivery is following a common trend path: Pioneers roll out the service, while everyone elseholds fire, waitin g for the kinks to be ironed out and the business to prove it can generate revenue. And maybe for the costs to come down.
Complicating things a bit, there are several different ways to accomplish delivery, based on a number of variables that include: what kindof equipment a company already has that can be leveraged and where the content being delivered is stored (and with whom). All of that iscompounded by business consideration s;Cablevis ion devised a novel system of delivering content through its video channel,an appro achdesigned to sidestep arguments about distribution rights (it’s worked,so far).
Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable have developed their own multi-screen capabilities, largely in-house.Virgin Media in theU.K.and StarHub in Sing apore have turned to SeaChange to implement and manage multi-screen delivery.Ericsso n recently announced thatChungwa Telecom will be using its multi-screen TV solution starting in December.Swisscom recently demonstrated multi-screen capabilitiesusing equipment from RGB Networks.
There are several implementations of TV Everywhere, which might be considered a subset of multi-screen,inasmuch as subscribers do infact get access to content on multiple screens. The distinc tion (one not universally agreed to) is that it is typically the programmer that initi-ates the delivery of the video,no t the service provider, though the service prov ider does authenticate the customer and ultimately deliversthe content on its broadband network.
Azuki Systems is the power behind HBO’s HBO Go.And Envivio has announced its 4Caster C4 encodin g platform is being used for TV Ev-erywhere services by Belgacom,Orange France and Stofa Denmark.
