Earth and space. The student knows that natural events and human activity can impact Earth systems. The student is expected to:(A) predict and describe how different types of catastrophic events impact ecosystems such as floods, hurricanes, or tornadoes;
Catastrophic Event
• An event such as a hurricane, flood, or tornado that causes a sudden or dramatic change to the Earth’s surface
A
Hurricane
A violent tropical cyclone storm with torrential rains and high winds caused by temperature difference of ocean water and air.
A
salinity
• The amount of dissolved salt in a body of water
A
Storm surge
• An abnormal rise of the sea along a shore, caused primarily by the winds of a storm
A
Tornado
• A violent, spiraling cyclone storm seen as a funnel shaped cloud that causes lots of damage.
A
Mechanical Weathering
• The breaking down of rocks into small particles by physical means. .
Chemical weathering
• The process in which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by chemical reactions.
Erosion
• The movement of small rock particles from one location to another by means of water, ice, or wind.
Deposition
• When particles carried by water, ice, or wind are deposited (dropped) in another location
Watershed
• the land area that drains into a particular lake, river, or ocean.
Runoff
Water that flows over Earth’s surface.
Groundwater
Water that is stored in cracks and pores beneath Earth’s surface.
Surface waterThe water that fills lakes and rivers.
Porosity
The measure of a rock’s ability to hold water.
Water table
The upper limit of the underground region in which the cracks and pores within rocks and sediment are completely filled with water.
Recharge zone
process where water moves downward from surface water to groundwater.

Give two reasons people should leave coastal areas when a warning is issued that a strong hurricane will strike land.P
A - Severe Weather Foldable pages 215 and FL12
- Use pages 214 – 216 for research- Follow the instructions for the foldable
in the book
C - Write 3 test questions that your partner can answer using your foldable.
E - Write a summary of what you did today in class and what you learned.
10.17.13 Write to Learn HurricanesWe will predict and describe how catastrophic events impact ecosystems by completing a KWL chart while we watch a video.
