SALMA, BANGLADESH Salma sought the help of a midwife trained by Caritas’ Safe Motherhood Program. Salma was 18, pregnant, in pain and fearful for her own and her unborn child’s life, when she featured in Project Compassion 2013.
She lives with her husband, Masud, in rural Bangladesh, where maternal
and infant mortality rates are
tragically high.
Thankfully, Salma was helped
through her pregnancies by a
Caritas-trained midwife called
Pronoti. The Safe Motherhood
program has now reduced the
area’s maternal and infant
mortality by almost 70 percent.
The Caritas Safe Motherhoods
Program not only trains the
Rural Midwives, but very often
they meet and talk with women to build awareness about women’s health,
nutrition, pregnancy and post pregnancy issues.
Now 24, Salma watches her two children play happily.

This gospel combines the themes that have been emerging during Lent: the goodness and mercy of God and the need for repentance. It is an interesting exercise to concentrate on the woman in this story. She is dragged in by the religious authorities to be used as a ‘thing’ to test Jesus. In this early phase of the encounter, Jesus does not look at the woman or acknowledge her presence but addresses his response to the crowd and to the scribes and Pharisees. It is only after they have left the scene in shame that he turns his attention to the woman and establishes personal contact with her, confirming that she is a human person and not a ‘thing’. The intimacy of his address to her as ‘Woman’ echoes the term he uses in addressing his mother (John 2:4, John 19:26). Jesus neither condemns nor condones. He simply accepts the woman as she is and invites her to a new life. It is acceptance and love that allows repentance and change to occur in others.
REFLECTION
Have you had the experience of being unconditionally
loved and accepted by another?
Who are those people in your life who you love and accept
unconditionally?

Prayer For Rain Almighty and everlasting God, you have given
us this earth to care for and delight in.
Look with mercy on our need for rain for our
parched land. We pray that life-giving rain will
soon fall. We pray for those suffering from the
severity of this drought—people working on the
land, and those in business who depend on
farming and grazing for their livelihoods.
Father, help them to know your love and care,
and to bring their burdens to
you. Guide all those who are
seeking to |provide help and
bring healing in the midst of
so much pain. We ask these things through
Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
