TEAM MEMBERSHIP
Being a member of a football team involves some requirements: "Dues." The "dues" that everyoneshould expect to pay is your best effort. This applies to both players and coaches. It involvesphysical preparation in theoff-season, the development of th e fundamentals of football, positiontechniques, mastery of your assignments, and knowledge of the game. As a player you have twosets of tools available to you: your physical tools and your mind. Develop both.We all have roles and functions as members of the team. We have to know what we can expect ofeach other.Players can expect of the coaching staff:
1. Codified system of play that can be learned and will be consistent as it is learned.(Learn the system for the season, change specifics per game).
2. Assignments that are achievable - ask players to do things that good skills canaccomplish.
3. Effective utilization of the talents of the individual players. (Construct and adjust thesystem to do this).
4. Cause and effect: What to do.How to do it.Match techniques and assignments
5. Positive and consistent correction - teach constantly; don't gloss over mistakes. Neverbe demeaning in manner.
6. Teach to achieve comprehension and understanding - use the players' minds.7. Availability - coaches will find time for any extra instruction any player needs and asks
for.Coaches can expect of the players:
1. Development of football fundamentals2. Development of position techniques3. Development of strength and conditioning
. L ; '4. Personal study and preparation - achieve comprehension of the system.5. Acknowledge correction6. Practice fast - develop quick execution mentally and physically
Players and Coaches: Best effort every game day - come to work with an attitude. There is only result and we all share it, good or bad. It is a team effort.

MEAN GREEN DEFENSE PERFORMANCE
Football is a team game. The quality of the team is more than just the sumof'elevenplayers. All eleven playing the call with good discipline make the sum greater than thetotal of 11 individual talents. This creates "overlap," which means that everyone-does hisjob so thoroughly that there is always more than one man making a play.>
Success follows:'1. Defeating the first block2. Fulfilling responsibilities3. Making adjustments4. Execution of techniques
Basic Performance Values1. Make contact with techniques that maximize your efforts2. Finish every play3. Apply self-discipline4. Fulfill mental preparations5. Eliminate "Bad Downs" and "Bad Days" - don't accept them
Basic Attitude Values1. Believe in success - ifs earned2. Develop winning habits day by day, snap by snap3. Mental toughness means performance under pressure4. Allow no "unearned" scores.
Mental Preparation involves several things:1. Relate your responsibility to your technique - your job helps youunderstand how you want to play.
2. Relate your responsibility to those of your teammates - this allows formore positive and aggressive play.
3. Develop a mental picture of yourself actually playing the game.4. Achieve an understanding of the offense - how they execute and why.5. Know what you have to get done and what you might also get done-
play through your priorities.Practice Policies
1. When defensive teams are interchanging to the place your positioncoach wants you.2. Pay attention: Know the defense called.3. No fighting, hassling or profanity.4. No player gets on another player if he makes a mistake.5. Keep helmet on at all times.6. No trash talk, do your job and get back in the huddle .

NO HUDDLE
AUdefensive personnel must be alert for a "no huddle" situation. Our defensive right tackle has theassgnment of recognizing this and must check it after every play.' .As soon as a "no huddle"occurs, we simply make the 'call "mayday"- "mayday". Be sure it is madeloudly and dearly. The linbackers must determlnestrenqht as soon as possible and call it out. They(llinbackers) must be ready with proper defensive calfs basedonour game plan and make thecal!as quickly as possible. They must be certaineveryone on the defensive unit has heard the call. It isbest to look at the players as you make thecal!.
must repeat calls as often as needed to be certain we are accurate an9,that everyone hasived the propper call. ....
The sequence for making a "mayday" call is as follows:\
1. "mayday"-"mayday" (Right Tackle)2. Left- left (Linebackers)3. 931 Pirate Black (Mike LB)931 Pirate Black4. Defense can be called prior to strength call if possible.
Our general rules for a no huddle situation (mayday) are as follows:1. Be quick to recoginze the "no huddle".2. Know we cannot substitute players in these situations3. Make aUcalls loud and clear.4. Always be prepared to take signals from the sideline.

"STOP THE CLOCK"is the one time the defense will use a "time-out" to stop the clock in asituation where we must getball back for our offense. I t is very important that We are perfect inour execution of this plan.general cutoffs will be the last two minutes of each half. Here are the rules we will go by:I. Defensive coach will initiate the "Stop the Clock" procedure.
II. Only linebackers wiHsignal "time-out" on the field of play.III. Any member of the defensive squad could go from the sideline to nearestofficlal in direction of ballto signal "time-alit".
IV. Mike and Will linebackers wil l start to sideline when any time out occurs to confer with defensivecoach. A. Ifeoach has no pertinent information, he will signal to have Mike and Will stay inhuddle.
V.General Rules of Play:A. Never give up a first down as it is like a touchdown in a "Stop the Clock" situation.B. If close; tackle the ball to go out of bounds to stop clock without having to use"time-out" .C. Never call "time-out" if clock has been stopped for another reason.1. Incomplete Pass2. Ball carrier out of bounds3. PenaltyD. Be alert for a long cadence or a late count from the offense. (Trying to draw youoffsides to get a first down).E. If forced to make defensive calfs from a "no huddle" use best run defense.F. Understand most teams will try and run the ball in this situation.
n most cases we will have 3 timeouts to use in "Stop the Clock". If we play good defense and arein stopping the clock it is possible to get the ball back and use up very little time.t would be super if we were able to conserve a "time-out" or two for the offense. This would be possiblewe forced them to go out of bounds or throw an incomplete pass.
procedure could be the difference between winning or losing.

"TWO MINUTE DRILL"
We will use the term" Two Minute o riII"to initiate defensive reaction to this situation. I t is most oftenin the last two minutes of the half and the last two minute's of the game. This period defiers from a "Stop the Glock" situation in these ways:
r . Never gamble or take a chance to make a big play and give up a touchdown.II. First downs are of some importance if afield goal will beat us.III. If close; play ball carrier to keep him inbounds (We want the dock to run).IV. Be ready for "No Huddle"~ Be certain you have defense.V. Be ready for quick cadences..Vl, Remember, we-cannot substitute any players when the offense does not huddle.VII. If the offense fails to advance ball, we may use a "time-out" to get our offense the ball (end offirst half only).GENERAL RULES OF PLAY
l. We will maintain our narmal game plan in making defensive calls.II. We will play aggressively and not wait until the offense makes a mistake.III. Utilize" 2 minute game plan on no huddle".IV. We must be ready for a "Geronimo" situation (last play of the game or half).
basic phitosophy is that we are going to stay after them with our game pian for "pass" situation.hich means wil l will use both zone and man defenses. We wil l not sit back and let the offenseove the ball..

"SuddenChanae"
The score is 7-7 in the fourth quarter, and westopped our opponents on our own 28 yard line. We have just sat down on the bench; we feeland relieved. We have just stopped tham after a long drive. Wef;ansure use the rest. As ourteam starts to drive the ball out from the 28 yard line, afumble on the first playaccours andopponent has the ball on our 24 yardiine! THIS IS THE SUDDEN CHANGE SITUATION!
The feeling of the two teams at this point:Our opponents:. What a great break.. We have them on the ropes now.Their defense will be tired .. Let's hit them quickly. Our defense did a great job getting the ball back for us.
'\
1. What a lousy break.2. They have us in a big hole now.3. I am tired; I don't know whether lean hold out again.4. Boy, I hope someone comes up with a big play. Our offense sure put us in a hole. How coud they do that?you see why it takes a great defense to overcome a succen change situation.opponents will be mentally up, and unless we prepare ourselves,we will not
Always huddle up before you go back into the game.Gain control of your thoughts and get yourself ready to play defense again.Realize that you must get yourself and your teammates up mentally.Go all out to make the big play. Now is the test of our defense. Accept the challenge. When we stop them now, we will have an even greater psychological advantage.
HE SUDDEN CHANGE IS QURSI!! We can do an excellent job in this area i f we are mentallyready for it!!

As most of you know, there is a fine line between GOOD and GREAT!
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GREAT LINEBACKER
\ The following points, if read, digested and practiced, will make the difference:1. Know the defense - your responsibility.
2. Read and key the big picture.3 . Proper footwork - first step.
4.Locate the "balt."5 . Attack the LOS to your fill.
6 . Inside leverage on the ball (inside out).7. Anticipate the blockers - know who can hurt you.8. Backside Linebacker must whip the Center
9. Somehow, someway, get to the ball.10. Be a sure tackler.11.Use your hands.12.Attack blockers.
13. Be a football player - not a robot.

PLAYER
On defense, when we say, "Be a Player', we are talking about making plays, even in tough situations. In today'sfootbaJl, we will see multiple formations withdifferent methods of shifting, motioning players, and adjustments to numerouslooks. We will also see different offensive philosophies.foptons schemes, powerfootball, trick plays, west-coastpasslnq attack, east-coast passing game, etc.).Also, with rule changes in the last decade, which allow offenses to use theirhands (hold) and more restrictions on defenders use of hands, we have beenplaced at a slight disadvantage.
A 'Player' will find a way to get the job done. A 'Player' will use qualities that allgood defensive players have used to overcome obstacles placed in front of them:
> - Enthusiasm > - Determination > - Relentlessness> - Team Work : ; . . Being Coachable > - Desire> - Work Ethic : ; . - Instinct > - Effort> - Aggressiveness > - Speed > - Commitment> - Toughness > - Intelligence Attitude> - Mental > - Strength > - ConfidencePreparation > - Explosion> - Heart > - Leadership
THESE ARE THE QUALITIES THAT MAKEA 'PLAYER' ON DEFENSE!

LINEBACKER DROP TECHNIQUE & RESPONSIA8LlTY
A. Vision Points: We want to be in position to actually see the Receiver into his route. This is about 2.or 3 steps into the linebacker drop. The "angle" of drop will bedependent in part on the Receiver's route or path.
B. Driving to Aiming Paints: linebackers will have very specific aiming paints for eachcoverage. This will vary somewhat with some coverage, Aiming points indicate theinitial angle and drop points.
C. OraD Technique: Back pedal to hole (Black) and tite hook (Red). Gross over run to,wide hook (Wide Red), curl (Blue), flat (White). Once we have reached our depth, thelinebacker wHfshuffle, looking to his responsibil ity Receiver, To adjust depth, slidewithout crossing over. Look to either direction for a threat.
1. Head on Swivel: In any drop, the phase "Head on a swivel" may be used meaningonce vision is discovered, the defender must look back to QB and/or 2ndkey todiscover where the ball is to be thrown or who to cover. Then the Linebacker maybe asked to once again find the threat.
