INTRODUCTION:
National Service Scheme popularly known as NSS was launched in Mahatma Gandhi Centenary
year 1969 and aimed to developing student‟s personality through community service. National
Service Scheme (NSS) is a permanent youth Programme under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and
Sports, Government of India.
2. OBJECTIVE:
The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development through the community service. The
broad objectives of NSS are to:
• Understand the community in which they work.
• Understand themselves in relation to their community.
• Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving
process.
• Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
• Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.
• Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities.
• Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
• Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
• Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
• Practice national integration and social harmony.
3. MOTTO:
The motto or watchword of the NSS is “Not me but you”. It underlines that the welfare of an
individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of society on the whole. This express the
essence of democratic living and upholds the need of selfless service and appreciation of the
other man‟s point of view and also consideration for fellow human beings.
4. SYMBOL:
The symbol of the National Service Scheme has been based on the Giant Rath Wheel of the
world famous Konark Sun Temple of Orissa, India. These giant wheels of the sun temple portray
the cycles of creation, preservation and release and signify the movement in life across time and
space. The design of the symbol, a simplified form of the Sun Chariot wheel primarily depicts
movement. The wheel signifies the progressive cycle of life. It stands for continuity as well as
change and implies the continuous striving of NSS for social transformation and enlistment.

1. Blood donation camp.
A blood donation camp was conducted on 1st July 2018 at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital,
Pune. The NSS Volunteers along with coordinator visited the camp and donated blood
contributing to the noble cause of blood donation for saving lives.
A deed of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

2. Tree Plantation
The Tree Plantation Programme was held at Savitribai Phule Pune University dated on 31st July
2018 at Management Studies Department. Mr.Rajendra Jagtap, Forest Department representative
of Maharashtra, delivered a speech on main aspect of tree plantation over campus. Dr.Nitin
Karmalkar, Vice- Chancellor of Savitribai Phule Pune University, discussed about the
advantages of tree plantation, biodiversity and monoculture process to attract various birds, also
the benefits that this plantation would do to animals and human beings.

3. Hum fit to India fit workshop:
Health is a very important aspect in order to lead a successful life. Hence the students have
attended a workshop conducted by the esteemed SPPU University in order to promote awareness
regarding exercise and health of individuals. During this, students participated in various
activities such as Yoga, lezime etc.
Fitness is not a destination, it‟s a way of life.

4. Cleanliness drive at Kanhegaon
„Cleanliness is next to Godliness‟ as always said, here heading towards a cleaner greener and
disease-free environment at Kanhe station and the surrounding premises.

5.Swatch Bharat Abhiyan
Under the Swatch Bharat Abhiyan , a cleanliness drive was held, the NSS volunteers visited
Talera Hospital, Chinchwad; Sant Moni Baba Old age home and Nachiket Balagram near
Akurdi railway station for cleanliness drive activity. The activity was conducted from
11th
August to15th August 2018. The volunteers enthusiastically participated in the activity,
where they were appreciated for their work. Around 25 students participated in this activity. The
surrounding areas and various departments of the hospital was cleaned.

6. Police Mitra (Ganesh Visarjan)
Under the 'National Service Scheme‟ on 23rd
of September 2018 Police Mitra activity was held at
'Shagun Chowk', Pimpri, on the occasion of Ganesh Visarjan. Assistant Police Inspector Mr.
Patil (Traffic Police Department), Mrs. Gaykar, Mrs. Manjusha Angal instructed and guided the
students to control traffic and crowd of Ganesh Visarjan at the Shagun Chowk. The overall
experience of the volunteers was great and they were also appreciated by the Police Officers. It
was an honor for the volunteers to serve for the people.
The God neither arrives nor leaves, we celebrate to merge into elements.
Co-operation is a higher moral principle than competition.

7. Rally (Swatch Bharat Abhiyan)
Swatch Bharat Abhiyan rally- As a part of NSS week celebration (24th
Sept to 30th
Sept 2018),a
Rally, Streetplay, Patient Counseling and Door to Door Meetings (leaflet distribution and
counseling) were conducted to motivate the students and emphasize the importance of events.
The volunteers organized this activity and the Streetplay and rally was performed in the Campus
of Dr. D.Y.Patil Educational Complex Akurdi, Pune. The door to door interaction was conducted
at Nava Shantiniketan Society to spread awareness about swine flu, dengue like diseases and
precautions to be taken while taking any kind of medications.

8. Streetplay based on Swatch Bharat:
Art is a way to express when other ways abstain.
Inculcating morals and ethics through a thought-provoking street play.
9. Celebration of Gandhi Jayanti:
On occasion of Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, NSS unit of Dr. D.Y. Patil College of Pharmacy
performed the Shramadan Activity at Nachiket Balagram-Akurdi, Pune. The classrooms, stairs
and premises of the Nachiket balgram were cleaned. NSS volunteers attended a speech focusing
on the thoughts of the Gandhiji. This speech enlightened values regarding cleanliness of
surroundings and our duties towards the society in the volunteers.
Furthermore on 3rd
October 2018 in the Dr D. Y. Patil College of Pharmacy, NSS volunteers
organized an Essay and Elocution Competition. The winner for Elocution Competition was Mr.
Tanmay Walunj (F.Y.B. Pharmacy) and Essay Competition was Ms.Manasi Patil (T.Y. B
Pharmacy).

10.National Unity Day Celebration:
On the Occasion of birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, an Elocution and Essay writing
competition was held on the theme National Unity. The essays and drawings were evaluated by

NSS CAMP Personality development through social service
With the permission of NSS Dept, Savitribhai Phule Pune University, Pune, Dr. D. Y.
Patil College of Pharmacy organized seven days winter camp from 24th - 30th of January
2019 at the Kanhe village, Pune. Total twenty five (25 nos.) students were enrolled for this
camp on the basis of undertaking and NSS regular activity. In addition, teaching staff’s and
peons were assigned duties for the safety and security of the NSS volunteers. All NSS
volunteers were divided into various groups and one member from each group was
nominated as group leader for smooth conduct of camp activity.
During this camp, various social activities were carried out in the village as per daily
schedule.

1) Inauguration- The inauguration program of the 7 days NSS camp was conducted in presence of Grampanchayat members, College representatives, villagers and NSS volunteers.

2) Village Survey: NSS volunteers of Dr. D. Y. Patil College of Pharmacy, Akurdi, conducted village survey regarding economical, health status and availability of various resources of the villagers. The various areas covered were Ambevadi, ZillaParishad school area, Grampanchayat area and Buddha Vihar at Kanhegaon and Naigaon. In this village survey, the various aspects analyzed were availability of toilets, availability of Hospital, adhar card, insurance policy, bank accounts, ration card, fuel, benefit of government scholarship, health issues and birth and death ratio. Thus this survey gave us an overview of available facilities in the village. As per Naigaon Survey Analysis (Total 54 houses were covered):
1. Adhar card = 99.9 % 2. Insurance policy= 27.5 % 3. Bank accounts= 79.6 % 4. Ration card = 99.9 % 5. Fuel: a). LPG Cylinder = 70 %, b) wood= 26 %, c) Other source = 4 %. 6. Major Health issue in Naigaon: Diabetes = 12.8 %. 7. Birth rate = 40 % 8. Death rate = 33 %.

3) Swatch Bharat Abhiyan at Kanhegaon A cleanliness drive was organized by the NSS volunteers at the Kanhegaon which included
the areas of Ambevadi, Buddha Vihar,Naigaon, Grampanchayat, ZillaParishad school and
Kanhe railway station. A common rally was also conducted to spread awareness of a clean
surrounding and wastage of water. Street play regarding cleanliness of the surroundings
was also conducted in the premises of the Vitthal Rakhumibai temple.

4) Tree Plantation. Tree Plantation activity was conducted by the volunteers where 26 soil pits were dug and small
saplings of different species were planted in the different area of Kanhegaon. The various plants
which were implanted are Parijatak (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis), Jaswandi
(Hibisciousrosasinesis), Neem (Azadirachta indica) etc.

5) Health Checkup Report – The activity of "Health Checkup” was taken up for the villagers to know their health status. Here
we included measuring of height, weight, blood pressure, detection of blood group, eye checkup
and hemoglobin checkup. Blood donation camp was also a part of this activity were 31 villagers
donated blood.

7) Valedictory Function- It was the wind up day for the NSS camp but before that the volunteers were appreciated for the work done and also were wished for success in future!

8) Extra-activities conducted during camp- During this camp some extra activities were also performed like guest lectures for
the students. Mr. Sagar Kore delivered talk on the topic “Guidance to crack MPSC/UPSC examination” and Mr. Ashish Chimbalkar conducted session on topic “Sarpamitra”.
NSS volunteers conducted lectures regarding awareness of various issue like scholarship exams, higher studies, importance of various documents (eg: ration cards etc), Scope for Pharmacy, Importance of English language, Swatch Bharat Abhiyan, and a few more. Students who were involved were Sanket Korde, Arpita Vellore, Gurunath Pimple, Sanjay Ubale and others.

9) Republic day NSS volunteers were fortunate enough to celebrate the republic day during the camp days. A few students went to the Grampanchayat to celebrate the occasion while the other stayed back and celebrated in the Sevadham itself. Chief Guest, Mr. Nilkant Jagtap, PSI, Kamshet guided the students regarding Cyber Crime and Road Safety issues.
10) Old Age Home visit report-'Shramdaan " is an essential part of camp so, the NSS volunteers went to the Kinara Old Age Home, Ahirwadi to perform Shramdaan activity. Students planted onion plants, cleaned the area, cleared the grass and had quite an interactive session with the senior citizens.
11) In addition to NSS activity, NSS volunteer also participated or involved in various social
activities like Yoga Day, Science Day, International Women‟s Day etc.
