To the Residents of Grand Lake Stream Plantation:
The year 2019 was a year of profound loss in our tiny little hamlet of Grand Lake
Stream, as we said a final goodbye to many beloved members of our community,
including (in alphabetical order): Elaine Brown, Joseph Campbell, Vincent
Graceffa, Frank Milicia and Ivana (“Sam”) Newman. They will missed by all and
the Town would like to express its sincere condolences to the families for their loss.
The entire staff at the Town Office would like to posthumously thank Elaine Brown
for all of her tireless efforts and contributions to the Town, the Women to Women
Group and The Historical Society.
On a more positive note, the Grand Lake Stream Folk Art Festival celebrated its
Silver Anniversary (25th) in 2019 and Bill and Cathy Shamel and Sophie Melanson
outdid themselves with their 25th Anniversary Beautification Project. The gorgeous
planters spread throughout the Town were enjoyed by everyone for the entire
summer season. We appreciate all of Bill and Cathy’s hard work in making the Folk
Art Festival a premiere event and destination every summer, as well as their weekly
contributions coordinating practices and rehearsals for our very own famous Grand
Lake Stream Strummin’ Wildcats and weekly yoga sessions. A huge thank you to
Bill and Cathy for all you do!
Another favorite summertime activity is the Grand Lake Stream America Fourth of
July Celebration. Each year we are treated to a family-friendly fun parade filled with
wonderful and creative floats built by our neighbors and friends followed by a
fantastic and delicious picnic lunch of hot dogs, burgers and fries, with strawberry
shortcake for dessert. Our sincere appreciation to all involved who help make the
“Best Celebration by a Dam Site!”
Additionally, the Town would like to recognize and thank Audrey and RJ
Ammerman (and his pole climbing skills!) for their annual “Hanging of the Flags”
throughout the Town, as well as removing the flags at the end of the season. The
flags always signify that the wonderful summer season of GLS has begun!
As a small village, we are grateful to the Grand Lake Stream Fire Department for all
of the work it does in keeping our Town safe. The Department consists solely of
volunteers who spend countless hours of their own time attending requisite training,
which also involves a great deal of travel. Without these selfless volunteers, the
Town would surely be at a loss. Gary Santerre has stepped down as Fire Chief, and
we all thank him for his devoted and expert leadership over the years and wish him
well in his much-deserved retirement! This leads us to welcome Curtis Allen as our
new Fire Chief, and we are fortunate to have another committed and dedicated
firefighter lead our Department into a new decade!
5
The Town once again would like to express its appreciation to the Downeast Lakes
Land Trust (“DLLT”) for all of the fantastic work it does on behalf of the Town,
including the many educational programs it sponsors and the numerous outdoor
activities that are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Additionally, we are
indebted to DLLT for all of its efforts in planning, coordinating and overseeing the
installation of the culvert on Water Street. The Downeast Lakes Land Trust is a very
important part of our community and we sincerely appreciate every individual
involved with the Land Trust and its positive contributions to our Town.
A number of years ago the Pine Tree Store was in danger of a seasonal winter
shutdown, but under the ownership of Les Severance and Brinda Leighton, the Store
has been transformed into a boutique of eclectic gifts and a dining destination for
snowmobilers, ATVers, residents and visitors, as well as suppling all of the requisite
necessities of a true general country store. We are grateful for all of their hard work
and appreciate everything they do to maintain the Store as an integral and important
part of our community.
Our list of thanks would not be complete without expressing our gratitude to Danny
Bailey for the many services he provides to our Town, the foremost being his
outstanding maintenance of our roads and common areas during the winter months.
Our Transfer Station has seen some changes over the past year and we would like to
thank Marie Roberts and Michael Betz for all of their efforts in keeping and
maintaining a smoothly-run Transfer Station. “The Dump” is an integral part of our
small community and we are grateful to these individuals for all of their hard work.
And, lastly, the Town is forever beholden to the Grand Lake Stream Women to
Women and all of the numerous activities it sponsors on behalf of our residents,
including celebratory activities such as our recent Valentine’s Day Potluck Supper,
Town-specific ventures such as the yard sale and the very important and much-
appreciated service it provides of planning, coordinating and working the
[unfortunately many] funeral receptions for past and present residents of GLS. The
Women to Women group is always actively working behind the scenes to help make
our Town the special place we call home.
