From the Pastor’s Column / Noticias del Párroco
As many of you know, the priests of St. Charles Borromeo regularly visit with inmates at the
County Jail here in St. Charles. I want to share with you excerpts from a letter I received:
“Dear Father, my name is ------. I am currently at the St. Charles County Jail. I would like to share with you the exciting news that is taking place here [on our unit]. We have a successful Bible Study two times a day with at least eight people a time, and growing every time someone new gets brought in. We have a prayer circle at night with about 20 people. I have to confess not only did I want to share the news with you but I was also hoping to ask if you could send some more bibles for my unit? There are miracles happening here. I thank God I get to be a part of it. Keep us in your prayers and may God bless you.”
Think about that for a minute. Right now, a few blocks away, there are people in jail who are gathering three times a day for Bible Study and for prayer. If only we ourselves could be so dedicated to growing in faith. These men, despite being in a diffi cult situation, are living their relationship with Jesus in a real and powerful way. And, in doing so, lives are being changed. Imagine if we all lived our relationship with Jesus with the same love that they do.
Our parish provides Bibles and other religious materials to the County Jail. If you want to help, you can make a monetary donation to the parish designated for “Jail Ministry.”
(Please do not donate books or other items; the jail has very specifi c regulations on the types of things they accept.)
Doy gracias a Dios

Today's Gospel reading is the third of three parables in chapter 13 that deal with
the unexpected reversals brought by the Kingdom of God. (The other two parables are about the tiny mustard seed that grows into a large tree and the small amount of yeast that makes a large batch of dough rise.) All three are about the few and the many and the Kingdom of God.
As this parable opens, Luke reminds us that Jesus is making his way to Jerusalem, teaching as he goes. A question from the crowd again gives Jesus the chance to make a prophetic statement. The question about will only a few be saved uses typical Christian language about salvation but also expresses the Jewish concern about whether everyone who calls himself a Jew is actually faithful to the covenant, a concern of the Pharisees.
Jesus answers that they must strive in the time remaining to enter through the narrow door because many will be trying to get in but won't be strong enough. He then moves
to a parable about another door. (The translation says “gate” then “door,” but the same Greek word is used.) Once all those entering the master's house are in and he locks the door, there will be no way for
others to get in.
Unlike the Gospel reading from a few weeks ago where Jesus was teaching about prayer, and we
were told to knock and the door would be opened, in this parable, the master will not open and say he does not know us. People from the north, south, east, and west will take our place inside. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the
prophets will take our place in the Kingdom of God. Those who do not make it through the narrow door will be cast out to where there is wailing and grinding of teeth.
The answer to the question if only a few will be saved is no. In the end, many will be saved, but many who thought they would be saved will not be saved. The parable is a prophetic warning to repentance in order to enter the kingdom.
