Please investigate the viability of this venture and report back. The greenhousewe used for this project is still available but it is no longer possible to allowpupils within the school grounds out of school hours. Could we build a simplecontrol system to run the greenhouse automatically?
Dear Headteacher,
As you may remember, in the past St Egbert’s school and the Phoenix Centrehave worked together to raise money to support the Centre’s charitable work inthe local area.
It is several years since we last worked together and in that time our chieffundraiser, Mr Whiteacre, has retired.
I was hoping that we might, once again, develop a project in which the pupils ofSt Egbert’s could take part. I wondered whether it would be possible to restartthe very successful ‘Bedding plant’ activity that the school used to run everyspring.
I cannot supply much fine detail other than that the pupils raised seedlings ofbedding plants in the school greenhouse and advertised them for sale to parentsand friends and the local community. The Phoenix Centre then received theprofits from the venture while the school sustained the costs of materials andseeds. I still have available a list of orders from the last time the project ran. Ifyou agree to support the venture, I can supply this list, if it would help withplanning.
Please let me know if there is anything more you need to know to enable you todecide whether you are able to support our Centre in this venture.

Lesson 1Identifying the elements to consider for the financial modelThe first part of the project will be the financial model. Jot down on the diagram on Pupilresource 4 all those items that will need to be costed in, for example, the seeds. In the next lesson you will create the financial model.
Lesson 2Reviewing the model and suggesting improvementsAnnotate your printouts of the financial model. You should include:
• an explanation of what you have included, and why;• the formulae used;• why you have positioned data in particular cells.Suggest how the model might be developed. Write down at least five questions that themodel could answer.
Lesson 3Annotating the financial modelCollect together all your documentation, from your homework and your planning sheets,relating to the financial model. Annotate any printouts showing development fromprevious versions, giving reasons for the changes, and note any benefits the changes have brought.
Lesson 4Starting to draft the reportUse Pupil resource 11 to draft the start of a report for the headteacher on thegreenhouse element of the project. You should state whether it is feasible and explainwhat will be monitored and what will be controlled in the greenhouse.Remember, this is just your first draft.
Lesson 5Developing the solutionOn your copy of Pupil resource 14, add the information needed to program a slowerfrequency of sampling into the system.On the printout of your flowchart, show the position and content of the symbols used toproduce this effect. Annotate the flowchart to explain why the delay is being added in.
Lesson 6System life cycle for the greenhouse control system Look at the system life cycle at the top of Pupil resource 17. You haveworked through each of the stages there during the recent lessons.Using the right-hand column, record what you did in each stage of thesystem life cycle for the greenhouse control system. Keep thecompleted sheet with your annotated documentation to support yourfinal project report.
Lesson 7Documenting the systemTake the printout of your data entry form and annotate it to showwhat data types have been included. Give a justification for eachdecision, including those where permission would need to be sought. Write a short paragraph to describe the advantages of your systemover a system where all the orders were recorded simply on paper.
Lesson 8Reviewing the publicity materialsAnnotate your design for your advertisement. Note any developmentsyou wish to include, in preparation for the next lesson.It is essential that you bring all of the work you have been annotatingthroughout this project to the next lesson.
