Fresh political firestorm over Rafale deal: Cong releasespurported audio clip; Jaitley hits back with Bond dialogue

NEW DELHI, Jan 2:

The Congress today releaseda purported audio clip of a GoaMinister on Chief MinisterManohar Parrikar's alleged claimof a file on Rafale deal "lying inhis bedroom", igniting a freshpolitical firestorm as FinanceMinister Arun Jaitley crossedswords with its chief RahulGandhi.

Jaitley also whipped out a dia-logue from a James Bond film toaccuse Gandhi of peddling "lies"and "falsehood" in the Lok Sabhaafter the Congress president madean attempt to play the unverifiedaudio tape purportedly of theMinister Vishwajit Rane tellingan unidentified person regardingthe alleged claim by Parrikar at aCabinet meeting last week.

Launching a blistering attackon the Government, Gandhi tar-geted Narendra Modi saying he"does not have guts" to face ques-

tions in Parliament. He alsoalleged that Parrikar is "black-mailing" the Prime Minister.

The Congress earlier in theday demanded answers fromModi on Parrikar's purportedclaim and asked if this was thereason why a Joint ParliamentaryCommittee (JPC) probe was notbeing ordered.

Congress chief spokespersonRandeep Surjewala came outwith a conversation purportedlybetween Rane and another per-son regarding the alleged claimby Parrikar.

Rane purportedly can beheard saying that during a GoaCabinet meeting last weekParrikar allegedly stated he hadan entire file and all documentsrelating to the Rafale deal lyingin his bedroom, Surjewalaclaimed, playing the conversa-tion for the media outsideParliament.

He quoted Rane as saying,"The Chief Minister made a veryinteresting statement, that I haveall the information of Rafale inmy bedroom....That means he is

holding them to ransom. He saidit is in my bedroom here only inmy flat, each and every documenton Rafale."

However, there was no confir-mation on whether it was thevoice of Rane in the audio.

Parrikar on his part termed theaudio clip as a desperate attemptto fabricate facts after theSupreme Court exposed the "lies"of the opposition party.

No such discussion as cited inthe audio clip ever came up dur-ing the Cabinet or any other meet-ing, said Parrikar, who was thedefence minister when India andFrance signed a deal for the pur-chase of fighter aircraft fromFrance.

Rane termed the audio clip as"doctored" and fake and told BJPpresident Amit Shah that he hasasked the State Government toorder an inquiry into the matter.

Later speaking to reporters,Rahul Gandhi claimed the tape is"authentic" and that there mightbe many such "tapes".

"The Goa Minister is sayingclearly that Parrikar ji said in acabinet meeting that he has acomplete file on Rafale deal withall details and therefore, he can'tbe disturbed. There may be othersuch audio tapes," said theCongress president.

"What Parrikar is essentiallydoing is threatening the PrimeMinister and blackmailing him ina way," Gandhi alleged. "We havebeen raising this for a long time.(PTI)
