Firefighting
History
The first firefighters lived in Ancient Egypt. They had very simple equipment. They used wooden pumps.
a
In 1666, there was a big fire in London called The Great Fire of London. The city was made of wood so the fire destroyed lots of buildings. There was only a small fire brigade in the city and they still used simple equipment to put out fires. After that, businessmen organised the city’s first professional fire brigade. After 1672, they used leather hoses to spray water onto fires. The first fire engines appeared in the 18th century.
c
Today, most towns have got teams of professional fire brigades. Buildings have got fire alarms. They make a loud noise when a fire starts. The firefighters hear the alarm and come to help. Firefighters use powerful, modern hoses to spray water or foam onto fires.
d
In 24 bc, Roman slaves worked as firefighters. They formed special groups called brigades. They didn’t use wooden pumps. They used buckets of water to put out fires. They filled the buckets from a well. They formed a line and passed the buckets from man to man.

Which building …1 looks like a flower?2 looks like a basket?3 looks like a boat?
Fariborz Sahba is an architect in New Delhi, India. He designed the Lotus Temple there. He designed it in the shape of a lotus flower with 27 petals. It’s got nine sides and nine doors. It’s a peaceful, natural design because people go there to pray. The building is made of white marble. It’s a popular tourist destination too.
Frank Gehry is an architect from Canada. He designed the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain. He designed it in the shape of a boat. It’s got shiny sides and lots of curves. It’s a boat design because the building is next to the sea. It’s a museum and people go there to see art. The building is made of glass, metal and stone. It’s got a restaurant too.
Dave Longaberger and a group of architects in the USA designed an office block called the Basket Building in Ohio. They designed it in the shape of a basket with two big handles. It’s a basket design because the people who work there make baskets. The building is made of a metal, called steel. It’s got a theatre on the first floor too.
