Get into careers indentistry with ADOPT at the University of Sheffield

ADOPT is an actionpacked two yearprogramme for Year 12 students whoare interested in acareer in the field of dentistry as adentist, hygienist or therapist. Our aim is to encourage studentsfrom backgrounds that are under-represented in higher education tostudy in university and providesupport and guidance through arange of practical and excitingactivities.

ADOPT students are given avaluable opportunity to engagewith staff and currentundergraduates at the DentalSchool who will be open andhonest about course content,student lifestyle, workload andfuture career pathways.

ABOUT THeSCHeme. WHeReDOeS iTleAD? WHAT We DO.About the scheme – This programme is designed tooffer participants the appropriatesupport to discover whetherdentistry is the right choice forthem. We aim to give individualguidance, an insight into universitylife and academic study, and towork with young people to developtheir knowledge and experience ofcareers in dentistry.

Where does it lead? Students who complete ADOPT will be guaranteed an interview for an appropriate course at the University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry,subject to meeting minimumacademic criteria.

What we do –Throughout their time on ADOPTwe invite students into theUniversity several times per year.They will spend time in the DentalSchool, attend practical workshops,participate in revision sessions, bepartnered with a current dentalundergraduate mentor, receiveinformation and guidance on theUCAS process, volunteer in thecommunity, take part in relevantwork experience and get to meetlike-minded students from all overthe region.

There are two dentistry related courses at the University of Sheffield:the Bachelor of Dental Surgery and the Diploma in Dental Hygiene andDental Therapy. ADOPT welcomesapplicants who are interested in eitheror both routes.

DenTAlHYGiene AnDDenTAlTHeRAPYThe Diploma in Dental Hygiene andDental Therapy is a full-time (27 month)course which is run at Sheffield'sSchool of Clinical Dentistry.

Dental hygienists and therapists areincreasingly important members of thedental team. They carry out essentialtreatment for adults and children. Theyalso have a key role in oral health educationand promotion within the community.

This course is fantastic for students who are interested in the dentalprofession, and working as a professionalpractitioner. The lower entryrequirements mean that this course isaccessible to many students with aninterest in health provision.

DenTAlSURGeRYThe Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS)course is a 5 year degree and onsuccessful completion will enablestudents to qualify as dentists.

A BDS qualification can lead to a variety ofcareer paths, including general dentalpractice, community dental service and thearmed forces. Many of our graduatesbecome hospital or academic consultantswith responsibility for teaching, researchand patient care.
