On September 18 NASA announced that the STS-133 is expected to be the final mission of the Space Shuttle Program. The lunch is programmed for September 2010 and the pilot of the mission will be a former CAP cadet and current Senior member, Eric Boe.

APOLLO 11 - 40 YEARS OF HISTORY IN THE MAKING

The 78th East Iowa Cadet Squadron in route to the moon.
This month the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) was launched on June 18, 2996 at 5:32 p.m. EDT aboard an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has successfully entered orbit around the moon following a nearly five-day journey. Engineers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., confirmed the spacecraft's lunar orbit insertion at 6:27 a.m. EDT on June 23.
Our squadron´s name is in a disk on-board the space ship as a symbolic promise of the future of our cadets and aerospace education program.

Space station module name honors Apollo 11 anniversary
4/15/2009 - WASHINGTON, (AFPN) -- The International Space Station module formerly known as Node 3 has a new name. After more than a million online responses, the node will be called "Tranquility."
The name Tranquility was chosen from thousands of suggestions submitted by participants on NASA's Web site, www.nasa.gov. The "Help Name Node 3" poll asked people to vote for the module's name either by choosing one of four options listed by NASA officials or offering their own suggestion. Tranquility was one of the top 10 suggestions submitted by respondents to the poll, which ended March 20. Read more...

Wilbur Wright and his Flying Machine
You know the amazing story about the Wright brothers and their flying machine, but this is a film clip from Austrian archives showing the Wright Brothers demonstrating their plane in Italy in 1909.
What is fantastic is there was an on-board camera on the Wright plane and the last part of this film shows it. It's crystal clear. If you haven't seen it, you must see this important film. Wilbur Wright is at the controls on both of the flights. Note the turn and bank indicator in the airplane sequence. Check the video by selecting the picture below.

Gray Eagles

Turn up your sound! This is powerful and hard to get through it with dry eyes. This tribute to the Gray Eagles (WWII pilots) was in conjunction with an airshow in Ohio called 'The Final Roundup.' It was the last large gathering of the remaining P-51 Mustangs used during WWII. There were about 120 of the fighters, all of them in flying condition, of course. The flyover seen at the end of the video is composed entirely of P-51s forming the number 51. it was an event that will never be seen again.

On December 21, 1968, Apollo 8 blasted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida and three days later, Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders became the first humans to enter lunar orbit.

Amateur Rocket Regulations
The FAA has released new rules governing amateur rocket flights, and the agency responded directly to AOPA's concerns about temporary flight restrictions (TFRs). In comments filed with the FAA last year, AOPA had asked the agency to clarify language in a proposed update of the rules to ensure that TFRs would not be used to segregate amateur rockets from

Chandrayaan-1 Lunar Arrival
After two weeks of journey India's first unmanned lunar spacecraft Chandrayaan-1 entered the lunar orbit on Saturday (Nov. 08, 2008) evening. It started at 16:50 hrs IST and within 14 minutes, it the entered lunar orbit. It is now 504 km from Moon. ISRO says the most critical operation is successful. With this development, India's moon mission has been declared successful

Maybe, NASA is working in a project that could built a "space elevator". According to NASA:
"A space elevator is essentially a long cable extending from our planet's surface into space with its center of mass at geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), 35,786 km in altitude. Electromagnetic vehicles traveling along the cable could serve as a mass transportation system for moving people, payloads, and power between Earth and space."

On September 28th, the Falcon 1 made history as the first privately developed liquid fueled launch vehicle to achieve earth orbit.

China first space walk
On September 27th, astronaut (taikonaut) and mission commander Zhai Zhigang became the first Chinese astronaut to perform a sapece walk for just under 15 minutes from the Shenzhou VII spacecraft according to the live TV transmission.
There is talk about China going to the moon in the next decade.

Space rescue mission?

This month, two space shuttles will be ready to enter in action. The Atlantis will be launched on October 10 to repair the Hubble telescope. This mission is risky so the shuttle Endeavor was moved also to the space launch for a trip NASA hopes will never make: A RESCUE MISSION! After the Atlantis mission, the Endeavor will be launched on November on a mission to the ISS. The Hubble repair mission was postponed for later.

How? The project is known as Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). "Two satellites will be launched together aboard an ATLAS V rocket by November 23th. The mission is to find safe landing sites for the next moon landings, life sustaining elements, developing new technologies and understand the impact of radiation in humans that will someday inhabitat the moon" (Source: Nasa).
