Implant Surface
OSSEAN® is Intra-Lock’s biologically active surface treatment. It is designed to activate the body’s natural healing abilities and stimulate bone cell metabolism. This encourages accelerated bone bonding and greater bone-to-implant contact.
Macro Architecture
Multiple implant architectures address a wide variety of clinical applications. Selection of an ideal configuration, thread profile, and abutment can maximize aesthetic and functional success. Biologically and clinically-driven evidence enable designs that enhance initial stability and preserve peri-implant soft and hard tissue.
Delivery System
Drive-Lock™ technology enables the smooth, uninterrupted delivery from sterile package to implant site without the need for an implant mount. Implant delivery and placement is accomplished with an economy of instrumentation and without deformation of the prosthetic interface.
Prosthetic Connection
Intra-Lock’s internal connection utilizes a proprietary, clinically proven ferrule connection. It is designed to create a superior antimicrobial seal by significantly reducing microleakage and micromovement of the abutment. The In-Dex™ feature of the connection is custom engineered for reproducible abutment positioning providing a precise, reliable method for fabricating indirect restorations.
Abutment Design
A full range of adaptable abutment designs provide for prosthetic rehabilitation from removable overdentures to the most complex fixed restorations. All types of treatment planning are accommodated with a spectrum of One-Piece or Two-Piece Abutments. This includes the Flat One® Abutment System for multiple screw retained prosthetics ideal for bridges and bars.

IMPLANT SURFACE
Predictable stability during the early dental implant treatment phase was a significant factor in the development of OSSEAN®.* The surface is designed to activate the body’s natural healing abilities and to induce primary stability during the critical first two weeks after placement.
• Optimal Differential Profilometry
• Calcium Phosphate - “Beyond Nano Size”
• Thick Oxide Layer
• Site-Specific Surface Modification
RoboticallyMicro-Blasted
Each Intra-Lock® implant isRobotically Micro-Blasted in a clean room environment for precise control. Robotic sequencing and differential treatment is utilized to preserve the cutting groove geometry (sharpness) and permit each region of the implant to obtain optimal topography andsurface roughness.*
Multi-PhaseCleaning and Surface Treatment
Additional procedures derived from the semi-conductor industry and refined for biomedical applications ensure an ultra-clean surface. OSSEAN® Surface is exceptionally free from contaminants as confirmed by XPS-ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis).

Micro-Nano Fractal Topography
OSSEAN® Surface structure is engineered to increase host-to-implant biocompatibility and biomechanical response.* It is characterized by having a surface topography that is similar at all levels of magnification, from the surface to the nanoscale level.
The repetitive nature of this surface is defined as one that is “fractal” in nature. As with a set of Russian dolls, the structure when viewed at different levels of magnification has the same basic characteristics.
The surface beyond the nanometric level displays an ideal surface for fibrin attachment. At the micrometric level, the pattern is appropriate for platelet deposition.* Under lower magnification, the pattern shows receptor sites that encour-age the growth of osteoblasts.*
AFM: Atomic Force MicroscopyOSSEAN® Surface profilometry is well characterized with Atomic Force Microscopy, showing explicit details of its complex surface at various levels of observations.* This image shows a surface of 20µm x 20µm.
Calcium Phosphate – Molecular Impregnation
When viewed at a maximum SEM resolution (200,000X), OSSEAN® Surface is free of any particles. However, when examined under Auger X-Ray Spectroscopy, calcium phos-phate molecules (more than a thousand times smaller than nano particles) are revealed. They are present in the Tita-nium oxide layer as molecules (Molecular Impregnation), well beyond the nanometric level. These molecules have a greater binding energy than larger particles of calcium phosphate. In addition to extreme stability, the calcium phosphate retains its bioactive properties.*
AUGER Spectroscopy:An electron beam of 15nanometers diameter is shot at various locations on the Ossean® Surface. The edge, bottom and an intermediate location of the surface all show peaks of Ca and P. They are combined in a Calcium Phosphate chemical molecular state as confirmed by the XPS-ESCA.

As the implant was seated into the bone tissue, these straight or helical cutting edges progressed through the bone with a “snowplowing” effect. They created a bolus of bone chips and fragments that quickly compacted and accumulated. As the implant advanced, the tap portion became clogged and obstructed the cutting area with debris preventing the cutting of new pathways in the bone. The portion of the screw above the tap portion did not benefit anymore from tapping. This resulted in greatly increased seating torque values, (with no increase in primary stability), decreased placement efficiency and occasional over-compression of the bone.
Conventional Tap Design
Multiple design configurations and instrumentation have been employed to tap and prepare bone sites for the optimal insertion of screw-type dental implants. Early designs required bone-tapping instruments to complete the preparation of the osteotomy site. In an effort to provide a simplified and more ergonomic surgical protocol, features of the bone tap were directly incorporated into selected areas of the implant body. Cutting grooves, flutes and/or vents defined these as “Self-Tapping” implants. In reality, these were not “self-tapping implants”, but implants augmented with a tap portion.
Background
BLOSSOM™ is the improved, Patent Pending cutting configuration incorporated into the macro-design of the latest generation of Intra-Lock® Dental Implants.
Unlike traditional tapping design features, BLOSSOM’s™ architecture is unique in that it incorporates at least one cutting surface on each thread, including a spiral groove, which runs in an opposite direction to the threads. BLOSSOM’s™ engineering breakthrough enables the implant to continually slice through the bone with highly increased efficiency, minimal effort and significantly diminished trauma. Instead of a “plowing” effect, the thread literally corkscrews through the bone.
BLOSSOM™ Design (Patent Pending)
BLOSSOM™ cutting design creates fewer and smaller bone chips than those created by classic tap-cutting grooves. BLOSSOM™ also produces pathways for the physiologic distribution of these smaller bone chips rather than collecting and compressing them into either the grooves of the tap or the bottom of the osteotomy site. This Self-Clearing action forms an even pattern of bone particles that encourage osseointegration instead of blocking the efficiency of the tapping action. The elimination of a vent or large cutting area also increases implant-to-bone surface area.
The result is a Self-Tapping and Self-Clearing™ dental implant with reduced insertion torque and increased primary stability.**Data on file. Blossom® is available in selected markets only.

The data on this page describes the insertion torque as the implant progresses into the bone. The first configuration depicts a “no-tap” design, the second one with a standard tapping-groove and the third with the addition of the BLOSSOM™ Self-Tapping and Self-Clearing™ features.
Comparative Analysisof Design Features
Conventional cutting flutes decrease the amount of compressive torque required for seating. However, as the threads become clogged with cut debris, the torque begins to increase exponentially.
Even with a design employing standard efficient cutting flutes, the torque at seven turns records a level of almost 90Ncm.
Classic DT With Cutting Flutes
The same implant thread design with the addition of Blossom records a torque value of approximately 57Ncm at the same seven turns as the two designs shown above. This represents a 54% decrease over the Classic DT Without Cutting Flutes and an 39% decrease over the Classic DT With Cutting Flutes.
The BLOSSOM™ configuration reveals a remarkable difference in both Torque and Efficiency. Note that Torque vs. Number of turns is dramatically improved, and the amount of torque is significantly reduced. Blossoms’ unique design of the threads and channels result in improved synchronicity, harmony and contact.
DT with BLOSSOM™
As the implant is seated, poor efficiency causes the build-up of high compressive forces.
Note that at seven turns this design records a torque force of 118Ncm.

Redefi ningCutting-EdgeTechnology
BLOSSOM™ Design Intra-Lock’s BLOSSOM™ (Patent Pending) Implants are characterized by the introduction of an enhanced new con-fi guration of the conventional tap design. Instead of having a traditional, discreet “self-tapping” portion, BLOSSOM™
implants incorporate at least one cutting surface on each thread and a spiral groove, which runs in the oppositedirection. This type of macro-architecture is designed to improve the dynamics of implant insertion. The multiplecutting surfaces enable the implant to continuously slice through the bone with increased effi ciency and signifi cantlydiminished trauma. The implant corkscrews through the bone. The design also provides pathways for the bone chips to be evenly distributed in a physiologic manner. This Self-Clearing action encourages osseointegration instead of blocking the effi ciency of the tapping action.
Indications and Availability: The BLOSSOM™ Implant is a Self-Tapping and Self-Clearing™ dental implant thatrequires signifi cantly less insertion torque and offers increasedprimary stability. It is available in the CT, DT (4mmØconfi gurations) and 3.4mmØ confi gurations.

STOP PILOT DRILLSIn cases with poor lighting, lack of fiber-optic lighting or inadequate magnification, visualizing the laser marks on pilot drills may be difficult. To aid in overcoming these visibility factors and increase accuracy, Intra-Lock has designed a set of five Ø1.5mm and five Ø2.0 mm Stop Pilot Twist Drills in individual lengths of 8, 10, 11.5, 13 and 15mm. Stop Pilot Twist Drills have a built-in depth limiter! When larger Trispade Drills are introduced, the operator can confirm the accurate depth with tactile sensation and have full assurance of a precise final osteotomy length. These drills perform optimally at approximately 1,500 rpm and have a helicoidal design that enables them to cut very efficiently, beginning at the tip and continuing along their length.

Final Conic (Tapered) Drills
The diameter of the Final Conic Drill is designed to minimize stress generated around the cortical plate and body of the implant. The precise length precludes excessive bone compression at the apex of the implant. Optimum surface contact of bone-to-implant is encouraged by the profile of the Conic Drills. When Intra-Lock’s Final Drills are used in concert with their corresponding implants, the osteotomy site and the implants are in a state of physiologic harmony.

Intra-Lock Straight Abutments are intended for use in single or multi-unitcemented restorations. The abutments have pre-machined margins which simplify abutment preparation and may be additionally prepared to follow gingival contours. It is recommended that the bulk of abutment reduction and preparation be performed outside of the mouth due to risk of heat transfer to the implant.
Abutment impressions may be preformed directly using conventionalcrown and bridge impression techniques. However, for implant-level impressions that allow the laboratory to prepare the abutment and fabricate the restoration, Implant Impression Transfers and Implant Analogs can be found on pages xx and the impression technique can be found on page xx.
Every Straight Two-Piece Abutment is suppliedwith a Retaining Screw (HRS).

A screw-retained metal framework is the foundation for the fi nalrestoration. The functional and cosmetic components consist of composite teeth and any additions that are necessary to compensatefor soft tissue defects. Upon placement, the prosthesis is immedi-ately loaded.
Intra-Lock’s FlatOne® Abutment System is designed for full-mouthrehabilitation cases or clinical situations that require cross-arch splinting. It eliminates the need for parallelism and is ideal for bar cases and screw-retained bridges.
FlatOne® Abutments are characterized by having a fl at occlusal table. The fl at surface mates precisely with FlatOne® CastingCylinders. This ensures that the load of the restoration is supportedby a wide, fl at platform in contrast to conventional two-pieceabutments that rely on a retaining screw for support.
• Eliminates the Need for Parallelism
• Restoration Supported by Wide, Flat Platform
• Does Not Rely on Retaining Screw for Support
• Not a “Screwed-on Denture” Solution
3.5mm
FlatOne® abutments are available in two occlusal tables, a 3.5mm Narrow base and a 5mm Standard base.

In addition, they are available in three different heights, ranging from 1 to 3 millimeters, thus enabling the ideal placement of each abutment and optimum margination of the fi nal restorations.

Prosthetic Retaining Screws
REFERENCE NO. PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONHRS ...........................Retaining Screw HRS2 .........................Clinical Retaining Screw IFARS ........................Flat One® Abutment Retaining ScrewIFARS2 ......................Clinical Flat One® Abutment Retaining Screw
Prosthetic Retaining Screws:Every prosthetic abutment utilizing a retaining screw is supplied with a Retaining Screw (HRS) or a FLAT ONE® Abutment Screw (IFARS). These will continue to be packaged with the abutments as a standard machine surface screw. They can serve as a laboratory screw and clinical try-in screw, if needed.
When the final prosthesis is ready to be delivered, the Clinical Retaining Screw (HRS2) or Clinical Flat Abutment Retaining Screw (IFARS2) can be used. They are supplied in sterile packaging. Torque these Clinical Retaining Screws only ONCE to the recommended value of 30 Ncm.
The Clinical Retaining Screw (HRS2) is characterized by an enhanced microscopic surface refinement rendering a matte black appearance. This proprietary surface structure allows the maximum amount of pre-stress to be applied to these screws when tightening the final restoration. It is an excellent method for avoiding screw loosening and ensuring the ultimate compressive clamping force that holds the components together.

One-Piece Solid Abutment Analogs:The Analogs for the Solid Abutments are designed to precisely replicate the Platform (Prosthetic Interface) of theselected implant. Note the Platform on the Analog matches the Platform on the WidePlatform Implant .
Multiple implant bridges do not generallyrequire indexing or an anti-rotationalfeature, however, for cases requiring amachined solid abutment with an index,
(e.g., single tooth replacement) these abutments and matchinganalogs are easy to use. The abutments are placed using the standard ø1.3mm hex driver. The impression is taken with the “snap” impression coping (IPIC). The analog is then snapped into the IPIC, once captured in the impression.

ReOss® has a multi-pore three-dimensional architecture that creates an environment for new bone growth. The scaffold also provides a hospitable adhesive substrate that serves as a strong physical support for the infusion and growth of bone cells. The entire structure is an intricate, highly interconnected matrix with enhanced hydrophilic properties. Through a patented process utilizing barosynthesis, the biomaterial’s highly porous, synthetic polymer foam is permeated with osteoconductive sub-micron sized particles of HA. ReOss’s bone-like foam scaffold, osteoconductivity, and increased hydrophilic surface provide an environment for the stimulation of bone regeneration.

ReOss® is hydrophilic and configured as a multi-pore three-dimensional scaffold engineered to integrate with the physiochemical state of bone tissue.
Overview of ReOss®: A Resorbable Bone-likeBiocomposite PLGA/HA:Poly (lactic-co-glycolic) acid / Hydroxyapatite
ReOss® is a composite biomaterial comprised of two phases - a PLGA biodegradable polymer and a bioceramic. The polymer provides a structurally stable, porous and biocompatible5,6,7 three-dimensional matrix to which bio-logical fluids can penetrate, and cells can adhere. The HA bioceramic, due to its chemical and structural similarity to the mineral phase of native bone, allows the biocomposite to create a bond with the living host bone.2,11
Sub-Micron-HA ParticlesIn order to improve the bioactivity of the ceramic phase, ReOss® utilizes Sub-Micron-sized particulate Hydroxy-apatite (HA). This particulate size HA shows improved osteointegration and faster degradation times over larger particulate HA, which can impede bone growth because of its slow biodegradation.1,2 Sub-Micron-sized HA also has been reported to augment protein adsorption and cell adhesion, further improving the ability for bone to regenerate.2
Multi-pore Resorbable StructureThe porosity of the polymer matrix of ReOss® also provides an excellent environment to aid in stimulating bone regeneration. Through a patented process involving high-pressure formation of the polymer matrix, ReOss® is replete with both macro and micropores. The micro-poresallow biological fluids and small molecules, which aid in cell growth to perfuse the matrix, enveloping and sustaining the osteogenic cells that attach to the mac-ropores of the scaffolds. As the cells begin to grow and develop, both phases of the biocomposite degrade, leaving behind a stable, natural bone matrix.7,8,9
OsteodynamicsSeveral studies have shown that biodegradable polymer/bioceramic composites can improve bone regeneration as compared with conventional composites by optimizing con-trolled resorption, osteogenesis and osteointegration.1,2,11 By controlling the parameters which determine the character-istics of resorption and osteoinductivity, ReOss® provides a superior vector for the stimulation of new bone growth.
