ow in its fifth year, the DOC NOW Documentary Media Festival celebrates the work of Ngraduating students from Ryerson University's
Master of Fine Arts program. With thirty-one participating artists working in film, photography and new media, this year's addition continues to challenge the meaning and methods of documentary.
Included in the program is Larisa Kurzemnieks’ photography exhibit, This Way to the Beach, at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto, Ontario. For the past two years, Kurzemnieks has travelled to Wasaga Beach with her camera, continuing in her family's tradition of vacationing up north each season. Fascinated by Wasaga's vibrant past, and future potential, Kurzemnieks attempts to “bring awareness to the significant resources contained within the town by helping audiences see, remember and imagine the history and social changes that have unfolded in this iconic tourist town.”
Photographs of the beachfront, the adjacent built environment and the seasonally travelled pedestrian mall make up the series, and are presented as both a photo book and photo-based installation. The exhibit runs from June 19 – July 2 at 1214 Queen Street West, from 12 – 5pm daily. Kurzemnieks would like to thank Bing Jowett, Joe Bickerstaff, the Beach Booster Group, and the Archives of Wasaga Beach for their guidance and support. For more information, visi t : www.docnow.ca.
