Biodiersity is the ariety o lie on Earth and our existence depends upon it.
The loss o biodiersity and degradation o ecosystems is increasingly a concern or companies because it directlyand indirectly aects their activity.

Companies benet rom the ariety o ecosystems and species and genetic diversity, both in terms o raw material extraction and production and in terms o distribution and marketing o products. Thereore, it is necessary or
business policies to establish a new model that considers biodiversity conservation as an investment or an asset and
not an expense.
The International Conention on Biological Diersity determines the involvement o the business sector in biodiversity conservation, its 2011-2020 Strategic Plan consisting o 5 objectives and 20 Aichi Goals to pursue biodiversity
conservation, the sustainable use o its components and the air and equitable sharing o the benets arising rom
the use o genetic resources (Nagoya Protocol).
As a result o its interest in biodiersity conseration, the Club de Excelencia en Sostenibilidadhas produced thisCatalogue o Good Business Practices in Biodiversity Management, highlighting the good practices being carried
out in the eld by 40 companies rom various sectors operating in Spain.
Thanks to the inolement o the Fundacin Biodiversidad(Biodiversity Foundation), this guide will give publicity
to the good work o many o our businesses in this area, placing biodiversity in the action strategies o the businesssector o our country.

It gives me great satisfaction to present this Catalogue of Good Entrepreneurial Practices in the Management of
Biodiversity, a showcase o several projects being carried out in Spain by 40 companies with operations in various eco
nomic sectors.
This publication was coordinated, under the direction o Iberdrola, by the Club or Excellency in Sustainability. Through
it, we seek to inorm regarding the progress o companies in managing biodiversity, share experiences and stimulate
new initiatives that are critical to the preservation o ora, auna, habitats and the hydro-environment o our planet.
Iberdrola is historically linked to clean energy and environmental protection. We believe that respect or biodi
versity and ecosystems should occupy a central position in entrepreneurial strategies and management, as well as
in public policy. Initiatives such as the Biodiversity Pact endorsed by the Ministry o Agriculture, Nutrition and Envi
ronment through the Biodiversity Foundation are the key to orging sustainable economic development, acilitating
cooperation between companies and public administrations and combining eorts towards improving and preserving
the natural capital o Spain.
Iberdrola has had a Biodiversity Policy in place for several years, through which we articulate our two-old commitment to responsibly addressing the impact on biodiversity resulting rom planning, implementing and operating our
energy inrastructures, along with creating a culture o social awareness in this sphere. It has driven our active partici
pation in developing this Catalogue of Good Practices and our involvement in several very innovative projects. One
example you will fnd in these pages is the Bird Migration Project, which was launched by the Iberdrola Foundation in
cooperation with the Spanish Ornithological Society.
Our Company will continue its leadership in developing strategies or ostering sustainability. Through them, Iberdro
la achieved the highest ranking and was listed as the Global Leader on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index or 2012.
We are constantly mindful of our role in ensuring a future for the planet and determining our legacy or genera
tions to come. It motivates us daily to share our experience with society, oster sustainable initiatives and pave the way
or others.

Introduction
In response to growing international concern about the loss o biodiversity, at the tenth meeting o the Conerence othe Parties (COP-10) o the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Strategic Plan or 2011-2020 was adopted, setting
the objectives Aichi Goals or this period, including the Nagoya Protocol on Benet Access and Sharing.
The loss o biodiersity in Spain ollows the global trend. Considering that Spain is the country with the highest species diversity in Europe and that its territory is home to almost 60% o the habitat types o interest included in European
Directive 92/43/EEC, o May 21 1992, on the conservation o natural habitats and wild auna and fora, this is cause orrefection and calls or urgent action.
Thereore, the State Strategic Plan or Natural Heritage and Biodiersity 2011-2017 and the National Businessand Biodiersity Initiatie are intended to help Spanish companies understand and incorporate the objectives o theConvention on Biological Diversity and the Aichi Goals. Collaboration between the public and private sector is essential
in order or companies to achieve ull business activity in a manner consistent with the protection and conservation o
biodiversity. It is the responsibility o the latter to include in their business strategy the protection o the biodiversity,
ecosystems and environments in which they operate, which may also provide new business opportunities and income
arising rom their conservation and improvement.
This Catalogue o Good Business Practices in Biodiersity Management highlights the good practices being carriedout in the eld by 40 companies rom various business sectors operating in Spain, including SMEs and tertiary sector
organizations and institutions that support and help companies in the development o good practices.
We hae diided good practices in biodiersity into our main sections: Habitats, Fauna, Flora and Aquatic Medium.
In order to guide and acilitate its reading, general inormation is given on each company and business sector, number o employees and, in some cases, contact person, as well as specic inormation relevant to the practice itsel: the
proposed objectives and indicators used, the economic resources used and time spent, the place o implementation and
a detailed description o each practice with the results obtained.

Accinatura proposes that organizations should compensate or the area o land (insquare metres) occupied by their activity by buying and protecting an area o wildlie habitat at least as large in one o the richest, but also most threatened, natural areas on earth(a biodiversity hotspot): the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in Mexico. The objectiveo conserving this biosphere reserve is the creation, along with other NGOs and oundations, o a biological corridor to allow ree migration and dispersal o endangered specieso fora and auna and thereore their conservation and evolution.
The CompensaNatura initiative is part o the corporate responsibility o businesses, being an opportunity or practical action which oers the companies involved a rst responseto perhaps the most basic impact o any organization on biodiversity: land use. As arule, the sealing o land completely, and virtually irreversibly, eliminates the environmentalservices and biodiversity provided by nature in the area concerned under normal conditions, such as agriculture, the planting o trees, a habitat or the indigenous species o thearea, and the circulation o nutrients, substances and water. One square metre o poroussoil, i.e. unoccupied, can hold between 100 and 300 litres o water, an amount which canbe reduced by up to 35% by the sealing o land.
By April 22, 2013, CompensaNatura has already managed to conserve 485,163 m2 otropical orest in Mexico, an area equivalent to about 49 ootball elds, thanks to the involvement o 13 companies and 14 individuals.
The companies already inoled in CompensaNatura are:
Accinatura (945 m2), OneBigRobot (350 m2), La Isla Sostenible (130 m2), BrunoRemou&Associats (490 m2), Tiendas Natura - Natura Selection (14,035 m2), BotanicaSARL (20,702 m2), Xarxa Custdia del Territori (71,142 m2), Euquality Network (142 m2),Abet S.A. achieving its goals. An
example o this is that
ornithologists haveobserved specimens
o species listed as

black-headed duck
As a result o the enironmental impact study o the La Farana Treatment Plant,Aqualogy and Aguas Andinas dened the construction o the La Farana EnvironmentalLake, designed by the Chilean Ornithologists Union.
With a capacity o 50 hm3 in 7-hectare area o the 15 hectares constructed or the conservation o fora and auna in the area, the lake is an articially created swamp, home toa wide diversity o birds in an ecosystem suitable or the lie and development o thesespecies.
This lake was designed with criteria or the conservation o wildlie, particularly waterowl, some o which have been declared in various states o conservation according tolocal legislation.
Around 15 dierent species have been observed in the lake and the number o specimens, which varies seasonally, ranges rom 300 to 700.
The project is achieing its goals. An example o this is that ornithologists have observed specimens o species listed as insuciently known and rare, such as the whitecheeked pintail, the common shoveller and the black-headed duck, among around teen species o waterowl such as the chiloe wigeon, the speckled teal, the red-crestedpochard, the white-tuted grebe, the red-gartered coot, the neotropic cormorant, thewhite-winged coot, the silver teal, the silvery grebe, spot-ranked gallinule, the yellow
billed pintail and the Andean duck. Thus, the lake has become a habitat or waterowl with conservation problems andother birds o the region. Bird breeding processes have also been observed to take placein the lake, which is also visited by other migratory birds, such as the black-necked swan, which use it as a resting place.
The lake is isited annually by students rom the Faculty o Science o the Uniersityo Chile, who analyse the results o the monitoring carried out there, or the analysis andmodelling o water quality and the analysis o the behaviour o the birds that requent it,
thereby providing support or academic training in the areas o modelling and management o ecosystems.
Meanwhile, the results o the monitoring o the lake have allowed collaboration withstudies on bird movements in the Metropolitan Region o Santiago de Chile, whose purpose was to study the movement o birds among the wetlands in the region.

Baleria works
on various
R&D&Innovation
projects aimed at
reducing the uelconsumption o its
vessels and their
emission o pollutants
into the atmosphere.
The objecties o the actiities carried out by Baleria are based on its commitment to theenvironment, on the principle that the world we live in is not and inheritance rom our parentsbut a loan rom our children.
The setting in which the company operates -the sea- is a particularly sensitive medium,as refected in its business strategy and pollution prevention practices. Besides implementing and collaborating in environmental protection activities, Baleria works on variousR&D&Innovation projects aimed at reducing the uel consumption o its vessels and theiremission o pollutants into the atmosphere.
Baleria collaborates with arious organizations, providing human, material and nancialresources or the recovery and protection o autochthonous habitats, fora and auna. In thisregard, the ollowing experiences are worth mentioning:
Coastal clean-up operations in which Baleria, in collaboration with Voluntarios sin Fronteras(Volunteers without Borders) and providing its own volunteers, has cleaned up the coasts oPort de Sant Antoni (Ibiza), Canutells (Menorca), Pollena and Santa Eulalia (Mallorca) andDenia (Alicante), among other locations. In these activities, which have been taking placeor ten years, hundreds o divers have taken part and tonnes o rubbish, such as doors, car
axles, rudders and industrial bins have been collected. This activity is listed in the internationalproject, Clean up the Med.
It collaborates with the Colectivo Ornitolgico Cigea Negra (Black Stork OrnithologicalCollective, COCN) in the Martil wetland (Morocco), where an ecological disaster occurred killing thousands o birds and now aecting mammals, plants, amphibians and the entire naturalhabitat. As many animals as possible, especially birds, are collected and recovered or laterrelease; the animals, water and soil being analysed to nd the causes o the disaster.
Baleria has oered the scientic community the erries operating between the Balearic
Islands and Valencia and its network o volunteers to analyse the causes o the increase in jellysh and other gelatinous organisms in the Mediterranean, in conjunction with the Universityo Alicante and the CSIC (Superior Council o Scientic Research). The increase in this speciesindicates a worsening o pollution in the Mediterranean and its study makes it possible topromote measures to preserve the marine ecosystem.
It also collaborates with ECOIMA (Ecology & Environment Study Association) in bird andcetacean watching on the Barcelona-Mallorca crossing, in order to study the most characteristic biodiversity (particularly cetaceans) throughout the year and prepare a list o species andother data to improve environmental education.
The marine resere o Les Rotes, Denia, hosts the land stewardship week, in whichBaleria volunteers perorm beach cleaning work, replanting with native plants and orestmaintenance. The idea is to take responsibility or the conservation and recovery o an areaor o a species o fora or auna.
This practice o olunteer work and collaboration with NGOs o dierent types and in thedierent territories where the company operates, means that the actions are carried out yearby year and in most cases have been taking place or several years. This ongoing collaboration allows the company to reduce the impact o its activities and share objectives, which insome cases become shared projects.

The initiatie has consisted o the restoration o the El Porcalgravel pit, located in themunicipality o Rivas Vaciamadrid (Madrid, Spain). The use and restoration o the gravel pithas created articial lakes (12 lakes and water tables amounting a total surace o 2,100,000m2) by allowing the aquier to rise to the surace.
Sterile soil has been deposited in the Las Tablas lake to reduce its average depthto just 1 metre. In this way, it is perectly prepared to be naturally colonized by reeds andbulrushes. This system improves the diversity index o the area and creates an area or thenesting, resting and protection o the birds that inhabit the lake. At the same time, in the ElSomormujo lake, a number o coves and islands have been created to increase the overall
length o the shore.
The banks o these bodies o water are spontaneously colonized by white poplar, Lombardy poplar and tamarisk, the most representative trees o the area, which provide shelterto many small birds such as woodpeckers, goldnches and serins, and even bats.
The property has become a wetland o great importance, declared an Integral Reserveor its high ecological value in the protected space o the Community o Madrid, within theSoutheast Regional Park, as well as Priority Habitat at the Habitats Directive.
It is also part o the Site o Community Importance (SCI) o the Plains, Slopes and Moorso Southeast Madrid, with over 35 species o birds protected by the Birds Directive Annexand 30 migratory birds.
During the winter months, over 100,000 black-headed gulls rom northern Europe congregate in the lakes. Every year, birds ringed in Poland, Russia, Belgium, Luxemburg, Hollandand many other countries are collected.
The cormorant, a bird that breeds on sea clis and eeds on sh, also spends the winterhere, approximately 400 individuals being counted.
In the cold months, these lakes are also requented by thousands o waterowl, mainlyshovellers, pochards and tuted ducks and in the breeding season, cinammon teals, mallardsand great crested grebes, a species o great beauty, an excellent diver and with a beautiulcourtship display.
The slopes let by the machines are used as a nesting place by the elusive kingsher, a birdo great interest in that its presence indicates the good health o the area.
There are 17 species o mammals, including the badger and otter, increasingly rare carni
vores in the autonomous region. There are also 147 species o birds, 15 o which are includedin the Regional Catalogue o Endangered Species. As a curiosity, there are regional endemicspecies such as the wasp beetle, Plagionotus marcorum.
This setting has proided a site or the deelopment o, 184 vertebrate species, 15endangered species, 150,000 gulls, 2,000 storks and 4,000 waterowl.

Each mobile unit has
20 hives and each
hive is home to an
average o 40,000
bees, meaning that
800,000 bees are
entering the natural
environment with
each unit.
The practice aims to extend and recoer the mountain ecosystems that are essentialto the conservation o two endangered species: the brown bear and the grouse.
Moreoer, since the beekeeping sector has been in crisis or approximately 25 yearsor various reasons (o which the disappearance o bees is perhaps the most crucial), theidea is to promote and disseminate the important role these insects play in nature and, specically, in the production o ruit which is a basic ood source or many species obirds and animals.
To this end, the productiity o these ecosystems -both woodland and grassland
and areas o intermediate vegetation- is being increased by using mobile pollinationunits, specially designed or this project, which can be transerred to ollow the waveso blossoming in dierent areas and are not vulnerable to predation by bears. Bearingin mind that wild swarms are gradually disappearing, the mobility o these units andseasonal high altitude transhumance with which they are distributed across the territorysignicantly encourage the essential pollinating role o bees. Also worthy o mention isthe high number o bees that are mobilized by this measure, since each mobile unit has20 hives and each hive is home to an average o 40,000 bees, meaning that 800,000 beesare entering the natural environment with each unit.
In each o the rst two years o operation, 10 mobile units have been installed indierent sites in the municipalities o Camaleo, Vega de Libana and Pesaguero, laterbeing transerred to other areas o the Cantabrian Mountains in subsequent years. Thechoice o this region was based on the act that it is a dry and sunny enclave in the middle o the Atlantic mountains, with abundant woodland in the higher parts which arehome to the last surviving Cantabrian bears and grouse.
These areas are considered o interest or these two animal species within the BrownBear Recovery Plan, and have been declared SCIs (Sites o Community Importance)
and SBPAs (Special Bird Protection Areas), in Red Natura 2000, under the CommunityHabitats Directive.

The Global Nature Foundation, in collaboration with companies such as Cepsa, Ence,Herdade do Freixo do Meio, Cooperativa Agraria de Viver, Iberdrola and Red Elctrica deEspaa, has carried out audits (50% o the cost nanced by the LIFE project and 50% bythe Foundation) in which it conducts and analysis o the relationship between the companyand the biodiversity that aects its business, then providing the basis or integrating biodiversity in the environmental management o the company and undertaking actions aimedat the sustainable use o resources and protection o nature. The audit is condential, butthe impacts described and their solutions are discussed openly. The audit assesses, in ac
cordance with the environmental management procedure o the EMAS III and ISO 14001systems, the potential negative impacts o the individual business units, manuacturing acilities, products or processes, and identies potential risks and opportunities. It also usesdiagrams and indicators set out in the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) guide.
Following the implementation o the audits, the companies have developed actionsto improve their business management o biodiversity, both in terms o communicationwith their stakeholders and with specic actions in the ecosystems related to their businessactivity. This has led to an improvement in terms o biodiversity conservation. As a recentexample, Cepsa has nanced a communication and awareness campaign on the conservation o bats in the Canary Islands, which extends the range o environmental actions itcontinuously maintains in the Doana Foundation.
Not only hae the companies ound ways to incorporate or improve biodiversity management in their business, but the audit has also oered them new lines o business usingthe resources associated with their business activity in a sustainable way.
As a result o this, new partnerships hae emerged between the Global Nature Foundation and the companies receiving the audit, or joint participation in environmental projectswith an emphasis on the protection o biodiversity.
The acceptance o the companies to undergo the biodiversity check is, in itsel, a contribution to the development o the general objectives o the LIFE project European Business & Biodiversity Campaign. Moreover, the audit tool is dynamic and the companiesthemselves have contributed to its improvement.

Holcim works actively

quarries are properly
restored, so
that the site regains its
environmental quality
and is returned to the
community in an even
better condition than
it was in originally.
The Jamilena quarry ceased operations in Noember 2008, ater which its restorationprocess started. For many years, this quarry generated economic activity and employmentin the region and now that it has reached the end o its useul lie, it is still o interest to theinhabitants o the region.
This project is in line with Holcims commitment to sustainable development, in accordance with which it works actively to ensure that its quarries are properly restored, sothat the site regains its environmental quality and is returned to the community in an evenbetter condition than it was in originally.
The rehabilitation o a natural enironment is always good news or a region. In the caseo the ormer Jamilena quarry, it is even more so because besides the restoration o theenvironment it has an area developed to attract new industries and jobs and serve as arecreational area or the local community.
This has been possible to achieve this rehabilitation model thanks to the integration oenvironmental, social and economic aspects in the restoration o the two operating areas:the limestone quarry and the marl quarry.
In the area o the marl quarry, part o the mining concession with an area o 4 hectares,
works have been carried out to adapt the quarry yard as a recreational area or the residents o Jamilena. The surrounding banks have been replanted with native species.
Meanwhile, the old limestone quarry has been conditioned or lling with sterile materials rom a construction and demolition waste treatment plant promoted by the JamilenaTown Council, thus providing or the creation o employment. In the surrounding areastree and shrub growth has been enhanced, while the areas o dicult access have beenhydroseeded using native plant seeds, collected as recommended by the UICN. A total oaround 200,000 species have been planted.
The old crushing plant has been rehabilitated to house the Mining and Biodiversity Interpretation Museum. The new museum has been built according to energy sustainabilitycriteria and maintaining an industrial style.
The end result is an area or economic deelopment, education and leisure, or thebenet o the residents o Jamilena and the region, as well as uture generations.
During the implementation o the project, two collaboration agreements were established; one with the UICN to ensure the integration o environmental and social aspects inthe restoration o the quarry, and the other with the Jamilena Town Council or the transer
o the quarry land once restored.
All companies that hae participated in the process o rehabilitation o the quarry arelocated within the area o infuence o the region.

IBERO-REST is a young company that develops new international environmental management techniques, which are encompassed in the methodology known as EcologicalRestoration, whose main objective is to ensure that environmental management servesas a tool capable o creating wealth or society in a sustainable way.
The arm estate is a unique agrosilopastoral system in Europe, home to a greatdiversity o species, where human activity has existed in harmony with the conservation
o the natural environment or generations. However, its commercial viability is compromised when the environment is damaged.
The Biodiersity Audit in which IBERO-REST collaborated with the Global NatureFoundation took place on the La Mula arm estate in Cceres, owned by Herlusa S.L.The aim was to analyse the impact o the companys activity on local biodiversity in orderto seek new business opportunities and increase productivity.
Following the audit, specic improement proposals were developed based on ecosystem restoration techniques, such as the natural regeneration o holm oaks by the encing o land, the creation o a livestock pond and the building o cairns, among others.
These audits are a good tool or environmental conservation, they are specic to eachissue and do not involve a large investment o time or resources or businesses. Theyconclude with specic, easily applicable recommendations aimed at increasing production in a sustainable way.
The project was conducted in collaboration with the Global Nature Foundation. TheGlobal Nature Foundation is a private national non-prot organization o an educational
nature. Its aims are the conservation, protection and management o the environment. The biodiversity audits are encompassed in the campaign Business and Biodiversity, unded by the European Social Fund and the Programa Emplea Verde (Green Jobs Programme). It was developed by the partners o the LIFE project, European Business andBiodiversity Campaign.

The company wants
to encourage this
type o protected
species as they play a
key role in the naturalbalance by regulating
the populations o
micro mammals
and are also
emblematic species
in ecosystems.
This project is designed to benet certain species o protected wildlie: nocturnal anddiurnal birds o prey and occasionally bats. To do this, 500 nesting boxes are being installed in dierent acilities o the Company (evacuation line towers, water treatment
plants, renewable energy acilities, vineyards, etc.).The company wants to encourage this type o protected species as they play a keyrole in the natural balance by regulating the populations o micro mammals and are alsoemblematic species in ecosystems.
The lack o suitable nesting sites is a limiting actor or these species and, as a result, theyare using less suitable and exposed locations, suering a high level o predation.
For the manuacture o these boxes, made with certied wood, ACCIONA has had the
collaboration o the Special Employment Centre o the Prodis Foundation, a non-protinstitution whose purpose is to improve the social and proessional integration o youngpeople with intellectual disabilities.
The assembly process began in July 2012 and, beore starting, ACCIONA gave thegroup a practical training and awareness session to explain the importance o their work inprotecting the environment. Moreover, halway through the assembly process the youngpeople were able to attend a alconry show at the Prodis Foundation Centre to see at rsthand the birds the boxes are intended or.
With this project, the Company contributes to enironmental balance and social progress, osetting their environmental impacts and promoting the integration o peoplewith disabilities.
Today, oer 160 boxes are installed in dierent ACCIONA acilities.
Throughout 2013, more nesting boxes will be installed and monitoring o the nesting inthose already installed will be carried out to veriy the success o the project. The intentionis also to extend the scope o the project to an international level.

Despite the countrys wealth o resh water in the orm o lakes, rivers and underground
reservoirs, the population o Nicaragua has a serious water shortage problem, with anurgent need to develop the necessary inrastructure or the collection and distribution owater.
The SENER International Cooperation volunteer Programme oers SENER sta thepossibility o spending two or three weeks o their holidays in engineering projects tocontribute their engineering, technical or management skills and help with the development o an irrigation project in agricultural areas o Nicaragua under the structure o theCODESPA Foundation.
It is a project or the irrigation o agricultural areas based on the design o a methodological guide or the use o the low-pressure irrigation manual and or the installation oirrigation systems in dierent crops.
The work inoled preparing the spreadsheet and guidelines or use, the end product being a tool or dimensioning the IDEal drip irrigation system (name derived romEquipment Development Techniques), taking into account the data obtained rom theplot where the system is to be implemented, as well as data on soil type, crop and climatezone.
The spreadsheet results are agronomic (plantation water consumption, evapotranspiration, etc.) and hydraulic (rictional pressure losses in the pipe, required pump fow etc.),and there is also a list o the equipment required according to the SDI irrigation system(pipe, grommets etc.) to acilitate the work o the installer and distributor.
In addition to the spreadsheet itsel, a manual explaining its use was produced, describing the ormulation used and the assumptions made or calculation. It also includeda model sheet or data collection and another sheet or testing o the irrigation system, which includes a list o potential causes o system ailure and how they can be solved by
the user.
