WelcometotheBonsaiSocietyofSouthernTasmania,thesouthernmostbonsaisocietyinAustralia.Bonsaiisafour-dimensionalartform,havingheight,width,depthandtime.Itallowstheenthusiasttocloselystudytheon-goingdevelopmentofatreethat,inNature,couldachieveaheightof20–30m,butinbonsaimaybeonly30–40cmtall.ThechallengeistoreflecttherealityofNatureonamuchsmallerscale.AlthoughoriginatinginChinaanddevelopedinJapan,interestinbonsaiisnowaglobalphenomenonandsomeoftheverybesttreesandcollectionscanbefoundinotherareasoftheWorld.
MembersoftheSocietyarebonsaienthusiastsinHobartandsurrounds.Theyareabsolutenovicesthroughtotheexperiencedandverytalentedexpert.
Members’treesincludetheclassicbonsai,suchasmaplesandpines,throughtorareexoticsandAustralianand,especially,Tasmaniannativespecies.
MembershipoftheSocietyisopentoallthoseinterestedinbonsai,fromtheenthusiasticbeginnertotheseasonedexpert.Memberscanattendmonthlymeetings,participateinthemanyworkshops,jointree-collectingexcursions,andshowtreesinourexhibitions.Theyreceive11copiesoftheSociety’sNewslettereachyearandhaveaccesstoalargelendinglibraryofbonsaibooksandmagazines.
ThemonthlymeetingsareheldonthethirdTuesdayofthemonth,fromFebruarythroughtoNovemberattheBelleriveCommunityArtsCentre(17CambridgeRoad,Bellerive,7018)startingat7.30pm.PotentialmembersarewelcometoattendasaguestbeforejoiningtheSociety.TheSocietyarrangesvisitstoHobartbyexpertbonsaipractitionersfrominterstateandoverseastorunspecialprogramsformembers.TheSocietyisaffiliatedtotheAssociationofAustralianBonsaiClubs(AABC).OnememberisaDemonstratorundertheAABC’sVisitingTutorProgram.TheBonsaiSocietyofSouthernTasmaniawasdelightedtobeselectedtohostthe29thAustralianNationalBonsaiConventioninHobartinMay2016.
