Bourges, medieval city, capital of France from 1422 to 1436
In 1418, the dauphin Charles, (heir apparent to the throne) was chased out of Paris by the Armagnacs, he moved to Bourges onto his uncle’s land where he finds financial resources, administrative, judicial and military personnel who served faithfully Duke John of Berry.
In 1422, when he became King Charles VII, he made Bourges, the capital of the Kingdom of France, with the Parliament in Poitiers, until the resumption of Paris in 1436.
His meeting with Jacques Cœur which he named the «Big coin» was crucial in the reconquest of his Kingdom and it earned him the nickname of Charles the Victorious.
His son Louis XI, born in Bourges, built in 1463, a University with four faculties: Arts, law, theology, and medicine.
Saint-Etienne Cathedral: Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Monument, the cathedral marks the birth of Gothic art in the southern France.
Place Gordaine and the medieval quarter: The timber-framed houses dating back to the XVth century make this old part of Bourges the most charming district of the town. In the streets of the medieval quarter, old shops and antique dealers help to preserve the original aspect.
Bourges, a beautiful historic city

Bourges marshlandThe marshlands offer a breath of fresh air and a great place to stroll.
The flourishing vegetal growing industry that existed here in the 19th century has now declined, but the labyrinth of 1500 gardens and meandering streams continues to surprise visitors with its quaint and quiet charm.
Verrerie CastleThe Castle originated in 1422. That year, King Charles VII gives the County of Aubigny to Jean Stuart, Earl of Darnley, Constable of Scotland in recognition of his good and loyal service during the Hundred Years War, in the battle against the English.
Wines of the central Loire Valley: Sancerre, Menetou-Salon, Quincy, Reuilly, Coteaux du Giennois, Châteaumeillant and Pouilly-Fumé.
