Principal’s Message:Dear Canyon View Families,
I hope that you all had a memorable winter break and a happy New Year! Seeing how excited our children were tobe back at school on Monday was a great experience for the staf , and the sounds of children’s voices and laughteronce again fill our hallways and classrooms.
In light of last month’s tragic events at Sandy Hook Elementary, school districts around the country have beenforced to examine their security measures and procedures to ensure that student safety remains a top priority.CFSD and Canyon View are no exception. Over the last few weeks, I have met with our staf and district leaders todiscuss several security-related topics. As a result of these meetings, we have made some adjustments to ourschool-wide emergency procedures and our daily routines.
Since the beginning of the school year, we have been working closely with the Pima County Sherif 's Departmenton refining our existing emergency plan. We have practiced and fine-tuned our procedures over the past fewmonths and we will be re-evaluating the implementation of our plan in the coming weeks. However, lockdownsand safety procedures are only part of the equation, and we are committed to ensuring that our campus is a safeplace for children, staf members and parents.
Additionally, we also need parents and the public to support our ef orts to keep our campus safe by following ourcurrent guidelines and policies that are in place. Please always make sure that when you arrive on campus thatyou first sign-in at the oce before heading to your destination. It’s important to have your visitor badge visiblefor others to see when you are on campus for any reason. Staf members know to look for CFSD ID badges or visi-tor badges on any adult on campus, and to approach those without proper identification. We appreciate your ef-forts to help ensure student safety.
During the month of December, several classrooms participated in our annual Holiday Project led by our coun-selor, Mrs. Stevens. Through the generosity of our Canyon View community we were able to help five families inneed. This selfless act of giving made a significant impact on these families, and I thank each and every one of you who contributed to this project. As we begin planning for the next school year, we are exploring ways to con-sistently help other families in need throughout the year. Thank you for your generosity, and please stay tuned forways you can help.
On January 14th at 2 p.m. Canyon View will be hosting our second open house for prospective Open Enrollmentfamilies. If you know of any families who are interested in exploring what Canyon View has to of er their children,
please pass this important information along to them. Open Enrollment applications are available online at HY-PERLINK "http://www.cfsd16.org" www.cfsd16.org. As a reminder, current Open Enrollment families must reapplyeach year between December 1st and the end of February.
Finally, January 18th marks the beginning of our annual school-wide readathon. This school-wide event promotesand strengthens students’ love for reading. The funds collected during our readathon help our FFO fund teachergrants, provide classroom improvements, and support special student activities. Information packets will be senthome next week. Please support our young readers and our school!
Have a wonderful weekend!

make Character Count!
Connor C., Robby P.
Student Feature: Canyon View student, Eli C., is a caring 4th grader who donated his cut hair over winter
break to a charity called Locks Of Love. This student showed his character by being generous and caring.
He really wanted to help a good cause, so he waited patiently until his hair grew 10 whole inches!
The question is:
How are you going to make a difference?
Student Interview by Natalie M. and Jason K.
Q: Why did you do this?
Eli: I got the idea from my friend Fletcher whose father died from cancer.
Q: Did people treat you differently with long hair? If so, how?
Eli: Yes. Some people would tease me, but most people were nice.
Q: How did you feel when your hair was getting cut off?
I felt good to do this, but I liked running with long hair. It felt cool. !

Love Our Schools Gala Did you recieve a holiday gift you just can't use or have a duplicate of? Donate it!
Did you know the Catalina Foothills School District Foundation raises 100's of 1000's of dollars each year andthat money goes directly to support teacher positions within our district. 100% money donated by the Founda-tion to the District goes into the "pot" of money used to pay teachers. This means more qualifed teachers andsmaller classes. The entire district benefits and they Foundation needs our help! Each year the Foundation puts on a fun event called the Love Our Schools Gala and each school donates a bas-ket to be used in the incredible silent auction. Canyon Views basket is titled "Gifts and Games". We are ask-ing parents to dig around and find any new duplicate game, toy, puzzle or gift card and donate it to the basket. Donations will be accepted through Wednesday, Jan 23rd at the Canyon View office. Questions? Email JeanPopham at [email protected] And don't forget to attend the Love Our Schools Gala. It is a very fun, festive night with a great dinner, awe-some silent and live auction, casino, live band and more. Tickets can be purchased athttp://www.cfsdfoundation.org When you are at their website check out more information about the Foundationand consider making a direct donation-the money donated does make a difference-it helps give us all of ourfabulous teachers from Kindergarten through High School!
A note from the Health OfficeGood Health Habits Can Help Stop Germs
The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to
get vaccinated each year, but good health habits
like covering your cough and washing your hands
often can help stop the spread of germs and pre-vent respiratory illnesses like the flu. There also
are flu antiviral drugs that can be used to treat and
prevent the flu.Germs are often spread when aperson touches something that is contami-nated with germs and then touches his or hereyes, nose, or mouth.
Practice other good health habits.
Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/habits.h
