    Principals Message:

    Dear Canyon View Families,

On behalf of the Canyon View staff, I want to welcome each and every one of our new and returning families tothe 2013-2014 school year! The classrooms are finally filled with students and the silent hallways of summer arenow filled with students voices and laughter. There are quite a few new names and faces around campus, and the

adults on site are eager to build meaningful relationships with each and every one of our children.

As mentioned in our beginning-of-the-year information, our campus experienced a facelift over the summer.Even though there are a few projects that are near completion, we are ecstatic with the results so far. In the nextfew weeks, the construction should be completed and the end result will surely be amazing!

During the summer construction, a few security improvements were made, with the largest improvement beingour new security office located in the front of the school. During school hours, visitors will now have to check-inthrough the security office in order to gain access to our campus. This extra layer of security will enable us toensure that our campus is safe and that our students can experience an optimal learning environment.

On the topic of student safety, I would like to remind all of our families about some safety procedures we have inplace and we ask for your cooperation in following them. Your childs safety is of the utmost importance to us!

Morning Drop Off:Please do not drop off student before 7:40 a.m. as supervision does not begin until this time.

The morning drop-off line is west of the crosswalk. The first four cars are allowed to have their children unload. If you are further down the line, please patiently wait until you are in the first four drop-off spaces to allow yourchild to unload. We have several adults available each morning to assist children from their cars. Kiss and dis-miss!

Please do not drop your child off at the crosswalk in the parking lot and have him/her cross by him/herself. Thisis not safe, but it also makes the cars that have driven through the line wait as students cross the crosswalk.

Courtyard Pick Up and Drop Off: If you are dropping off or picking up your child in the courtyard, please park either in the in the Canyon View or

Esperero Canyon Middle School parking lot and walk to the courtyard. All security gates will be opened in themorning at 7:30 a.m. and five minutes before the afternoon dismissal time.

Dismissal:When students are dismissed, parents who wish to pick-up their child in the pick-up lane are expected to stay inthe right lane and patiently wait until they reach one of our four loading spaces along the sidewalk. Over the pastweek, we have increased our efficiency in loading students into their cars, and we have reduced the pick-up time10 minutes.

Due to safety concerns, students will not be allowed to walk into the parking lot without an adult. The parking lotis filled with moving vehicles and we do not want any child to be in this environment.

Students should not be picked up in the neighborhood south of Canyon View (unless they are a resident). Theincreased traffic in the neighborhood can create an unsafe situation for our children.

Bus Ridership:The 2013-2014 Open Enrollment Bus Application is now available on the district website: HYPERLINK"http://www.cfsd16.org/" \t "_blank" www.cfsd16.org under Parent Info, Transportation. A separate applicationmust be submitted for each student. Families who apply by August 30th will receive notification in mid-September regarding their bus application status.

    Curriculum Nights:

    August 27 Kinder, 1st, 2nd Grade and SpecialistsSession 1: 6 p.m. in MPR, 6:20-7 p.m. in classroomsSession 2: 7 p.m. in MPR, 7:20-8 p.m. in classroomsSpecialists will be available in the Art Room from 6-8 p.m.

    August 28 3rd, 4th, 5th grade and SpecialistsSession 1: 6 p.m. in MPR, 6:20-7 p.m. in classroomsSession 2: 7 p.m. in MPR, 7:20-8 p.m. in classroomsSpecialists will be available in the Art room from 6-8 p.m.

We want to invite all parents to attend our Curriculum Nights. Similar to last year, we have combined three gradelevels for each curriculum night to cut down on the number of evenings you may need to attend. CurriculumNights are for families to come to school to hear specific information pertaining to your childs classroom. This isan evening for you to fully understand what your childs day is like at school and what you can expect regardingthe curriculum. The schedule for Curriculum Night is as follows:

Each evening will be separated into two sessions (Session 1 & Session 2). Which session parents choose to attenddepends entirely on their needs and time constraints. Parents in Session 1 should report to the MPR at 6:00 p.m.for a brief introduction and overview given by the Principal and FFO President. Around 6:20 p.m., Session 1 par-ents will be dismissed and should head to their childs classroom until 7 p.m. After meeting with their childsclassroom teacher, Session 1 parents can then visit with the specialist teachers in the Art Room before headinghome or heading to a Session 2 classroom.

Parents in Session 2 have the option to meet with the specialist teachers anytime between 6-7 p.m. in the ArtRoom before heading over to the MPR at 7 p.m. Once the brief introduction and overview is completed in the

MPR, Session 2 parents will then be dismissed to their childs classroom until 8 p.m.

Curriculum Night is a wonderful evening for teachers to interact with parents and begin that critical home-schoolpartnership. We hope you will all plan to attend your childs evening! If you are unable to attend, please contactyour childs teacher so that she/he may send home any pertinent information. It is important for teachers to have astrong working relationship with the families of our students.

    Have a wonderful weekend!Rob HenikmanPrincipal

    Canyon View Milers Club

    We Run for FUN!

Canyon View Milers Club is a fun, voluntary activity for students in 1st through 5th

grade during lunch recess on Mondays starting September 2nd. This club is about having fun

while running or walking. It is not about being the fastest, but about being part of an

organization that recognizes and enjoys the benefits of physical activity.

How does it work?! Our PE teacher Ms. Gallagher, along with parent volunteers will set up the course along

the outside of the big field (Esperero track until October). As the students complete one

lap he/she receives a hole punch on their milers card from one of the volunteers.Students will be able to run/walk for about 15-20 minutes during their recess. Students

will NOT be timed based on miles completed.

Ms. Gallagher will keep a running total throughout the year on miles/laps earned so thestudents can see what they have accomplished.

There will be a raffle at the end of each recess for students to have an opportunity toearn a small prize for participating that day.

Why Participate?! Running and walking are both healthy and fun! Exercise has been linked to improved academic performance, classroom behavior, and

self-esteem. Students will be recognized for their accomplishments on the PE bulletin board. For

every 5 miles a student completes they will get a small toe token to keep as well as asneaker on the bulletin board with their name and how many total miles they have

    completed!

Parents are required to sign and turn in the permission slip before students are allowed

to participate in this club. Signed slips should be delivered to Ms. Gallagher. Volunteers willbe necessary to keep this club running. Recess for Grades 1-3 (11:50-12:20) and Grades 4-5

(12:20-12:50). Parents who volunteer will be sent an email for available dates using Signup

Genius! Small prizes/donations for the raffle are also greatly appreciated. If you have any questions/comments about Milers Club please send an email to Ms. Gallagherat [email protected]
