Attention students and families! The Canyon View Elementary School Character Counts Campaign is still going on. The way we are showing Character Counts at Canyon View is

through bracelets. For the month of December, this student-led campaign is about the 6 Pil-lars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. Teachers have been handing out bracelets and it is time for us to pay it forward. We are pay-

ing it forward to other students who display great character! That’s right, students noticing other students. Our purpose is to create a kid-friendly, character-friendly environment. We

want to make sure all students follow the traits and demonstrate good character!

Like it says on our bracelets, “Character Counts! Everywhere all the time!”

Notification of Pest Control

State Law (House Bill 2135, Chapter 102) requires the school district to notify parents, legal guardians, and employees 48 hours prior to pest/weed control treatments.

In accordance with these requirements, Essential Pest, vendor for pesticide treatment, will visit our school once month to inspect building exteriors, kitchen areas, and restrooms, and to perform pest control treatments of those areas, as required. Our current pest control program does not include pesticide applications inside classrooms. Such applications are performed only if infestation occurs. Essential Pest will treat Canyon View on the third Tuesday of each month.

Additional information may be obtained from the Environmental Health and Safety Office at the district office at 299-6446.

Canyon View Elementary School Readathon

FFO Winter Fundraiser Friday, January 18 – Friday, February 1

Readathon Bookstore: Thursday, February 7 – Friday, February 8 What is the Readathon? The Readathon is our FFO’s winter fundraiser that is run completely by Canyon View volunteers and students. Students get pledges from family and friends for every hour they spend reading or listening to books. As a special incentive, students earn free books that they select from our Readathon Bookstore. Everyone benefits from the Readathon. Students earn free books and foster a love of reading. Teachers receive books for their classroom libraries. Canyon View Family Faculty Organization (FFO) earns dollars for teacher grants, classroom improvements, computers, student activities and so much more. The Canyon View Student Advisory Board (SAB) receives funds for their programs and activities. Parents strengthen their student’s education through a fun program that rewards reading. How can you help? To make this program a stellar success, please sponsor your child’s reading with a generous pledge. If every student raises $50, our goal will be in our sights—of course, if you can give more, that’s even better. Look for your pledge packet coming home on Friday, January 18. In addition, please donate gently used children’s books to the FFO Readathon Bookstore. Your student can bring them to the school office or to any classroom. All of the funds raised will benefit the Canyon View FFO and the Canyon View SAB. Gifts are tax-deductible. All donations stay at Canyon View! If you have any questions, please call Julie Farbarik, Readathon Chair at 664-4545 or email [email protected].

Use your 2012 Arizona school tax

credit to help a child get more out of school.

Arizona law (ARS 43-1089.01) allows taxpayers to receive a tax credit of up to $200 (single filer) or $400 (joint filers) if they contribute to extracurricular fee-based programs in public schools. A tax credit is a full refund of what you owe in state taxes, dollar-for-dollar.

Here’s how it works: Just send a donation to the Catalina Foothills School District, earmarked for support of one of our many qualifying fee-based extracurricular activities. (See below.) We will send you a receipt for your records. Then, when you fill out your 2012 Arizona state taxes, you can subtract your donation – up to $400 – from what you owe in taxes.

Please consult with your school to see if a particular activity qualifies. Note: Your dollars cannot be designated for an individual student.

Arizona Tax Credit in the Foothills

The Catalina Foothills School District is a wonderful school community! It is impressive to see a community with such a commitment to educational excellence and support of the schools here in the Foothills. CFSD would not be the district it is today without the community that surrounds and supports it! The success of our schools' extracurricular programs is tied to the generous contributions of community members who divert some of their state tax funds to the CFSD programs of their choice! How does it Work? Any Arizona taxpayer has the opportunity to give to Catalina Foothills School District instead of paying it in taxes. The donation must be earmarked for support of one of our many qualifying fee-based, extracurricular activities. We'll send the donor a receipt for their records. Then, when the taxpayer fills out their 2012 Arizona state taxes, they can subtract the amount of the donation, up to $400 (joint filers) and $200 (individuals), from what is owed in state taxes. This is not just a tax deduction…it is a tax credit that reduces the amount of taxes owed to the state, dollar-for-dollar. For more information about how this credit will work for your individual tax situation, contact your tax advisor. How are these Dollars Spent? Tax Credit dollars are spent to support fee-based, extra-curricular offerings. However, regular communication between Mr. Henikman and Community Schools, leads to a beneficial partnerships that also helps support the needs at Canyon View, as dollars are spent to serve a joint purpose. What is the Tax Credit Goal at Canyon View? We are aiming for $30,000…that is only 150 individuals at $200 each! Where Can I Donate? You can donate online (http://www.cfsd16.org/public/_community/donate.aspx) with your credit card or fill out the 2012 Tax Credit Form, which can be mailed to Murphey Administration Center, 2101 E River Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85718 or dropped off in person at any CFSD school, by December 31, 2012. Please make checks payable to Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) and note the program to which you'd like to contribute on the check. What have we purchased at Canyon View with tax credit dollars? Here are some of the joint projects that Community Schools and past Canyon View principals have completed/purchased within the last 2 years, as well as projects underway or yet to come with Mr. Henikman:

• Lego Robotics team registrations and equipment used by CV students and Community Schools
