Chocolate Chip
Cookies
Do you know chocolate chip
cookies?
They are a very traditional
American food.
They are very yummy!
Did you know this super yummy treat
was born from a mistake?
YES! Here is the story:
It was a lady called Ruth Graves
Wakefield that invented chocolate
chip cookies.
In 1933, Ruth and her husband had a small hotel called “Toll House Inn”
(you know, “inn” is a small hotel by the
road)
Ruth was a good cook and always
prepared the food for their guests
herself.
One day, she was making one of her favorite cookies
recipes, when she saw she didn’t
have the rightchocolate .
So, she cut a bar of Nestlé’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate into little pieces
And prepared the cookies… Can you guess
what happened?
Ruth didn’t get chocolate cookies.
Instead, she got cookies with
chocolate bits in them.
Ruth decided to serve the cookies anyway, and….
Everybody loved them!
Everyone liked them so much that Ruth published the
recipe in the newspaper.
And they became very popular.
And the Nestlé semi-sweet
chocolate bars became popular,
too.
So Nestlé bought Ruth’s recipe.
Ruth got free chocolate for the
rest of her life.
And Nestlé created the
chocolate chip and published
Ruth’s recipe on the back of their
bags!
And us, well, we get to enjoy today a very
delicious treat.
Did you know that Americans like Chocolate
Chip Cookies so much that they
