happening.
Enrolments for 2014
At this stage our Kinder enrolments for 2014 have
risen to 22 students. At the end of year we will
farewell 15 year 6 students. If you do the simple
math you see our school will grow. At this stage it is
very important that I am aware of any families that
may be considering leaving our wonderful school in
the next six months. I will be seeking another new
demountable building to house the extra class and I
would like to do this early so hopefully it is ready
for the start of the school year. Please contact the
school as a matter of urgency if you know if there
is a chance you may be leaving. Every student counts
when we are talking new buildings.
Our Transition to school program for our new
Kindergarten students will commence at the end of

students within the next fortnight.
Education Week
What a wonderful day everyone had visiting other
schools in our Seacliff Community of Schools Learn
Together Day on Thursday 1 August. We were very
blessed with a glorious day and from all reports it
was a great success. Playing Indigenous Games with
other students was a great way to celebrate
Education Week. Everyone came back to school with
lots of positive stories to tell. There were close to
3000 students from 9 schools moved by buses to 7
schools on the day. Each student also received a
sausage sandwich. At our school I would like to
thank:
the parents who volunteered to help serve
the students – Jen Pope, Jen O’Donnell,
Angie Leckie, Simone Pearsall and Mr Lateo
for his wonderful cooking
Mr Galvin who arranged our games and
activities.
Tom our work experience student for his
artwork.
the Bulli HS students who assisted with the
games and the serving.
Mrs Stalker and Mrs Oldfield for all their
behind the scenes preparation and extra
first aid.
Our student teachers and teachers for all
their extra care to ensure the day was a
success.
It was a real team effort and one I know the
children will remember for a long time. Well done
everyone!
Our Open Afternoon was also a great success with
many parents visiting our school and seeing lessons
in action in all our classrooms. I know many of the
students got great pleasure sharing their work,
especially their technology projects. Thank you to
the many parents that joined us on this special day.
Surf Talks
On Monday 29 July we had our annual Surf Safety
talk from the Wollongong City Lifeguards for Years
2-6. It is an essential part of our PD/Health/PE
syllabus and a timely reminder of how to look after
ourselves when at the beach.
Debating Report
On Wednesday 7 August our debating team-
Kaimana, Tamzin, Isabelle & Emily debated Stanwell
Park PS. The debate - That everyone should become a vegetarian. Congratulations team your
arguments were very convincing opposing this
concept but unfortunately our opposition were able
to rebut well. This week our debate was - Primary school children are becoming too reliant on technology. Our team was Leura, Sid, Mikaela and
Amelie. We were the affirmative team and debated
Scarborough PS. We were in very close competition
but with some great rebutting skills shown we won
the debate. Our students are gaining in confidence
and I know the assistance of parents and community
members is invaluable in preparing each team. Our
aim is to give many students the experience and so
our team changes each debate. Other COS schools
only have the one debating team. The finals will be
held at Bulli High School on Tuesday 10 September
– we will await to see if we get there!

Stranger Danger
With the recent reports of approaches to students
in our local area, we have reminded students of
procedures which they could use if approached.
This is a standard part of our welfare curriculum
and is revised regularly in class. Local schools are
always notified directly by the Principal receiving
the report. Please ensure you discuss actions with
your child to ensure their safety in the event of any
incidences.
PSSA Girls by Ella W
All the girls from Years 3-6 travelled to Woniora
Primary School to play netball. Most of the girls
had not played netball before but that didn’t stop
them having fun.
We have 2 senior teams and 2 junior teams and
every week they play 2 games against students
from other schools. We don’t keep score because
that isn’t the point. The point is learning new skills,
getting fit and having fun meeting and playing
against other students.
PSSA Boys by Dacey
The boys travelled to Thirroul for soccer. We
played games against Austinmer and Stanwell Park.
We list against Stanwell Park 3-2 and won against
Austinmer 4-2. The games were not too
competitive so everyone had a great time.
Garden Session by Lilly S
On Monday all the garden Ambassadors and Aaron
were setting up for Year 3 to come. First we had an
amazing Aaron tour to see what needed to be done.
We had Isabelle, Kaimana and Tamzin on “no dig”
and Kylan planting olives, custard apples and feeding
them. There were many more jobs to be done.
Everyone had a great time with Aaron and the
garden Ambassadors and nothing sums it up without
some freshly picked sugarcane.
Green Connect by Sid
Green Connect visited our school this morning. We
took them on a tour of our garden, worm farms and
recycling.
The Lecturers are going to help us with a number of
things – They will help us do a rubbish audit – this
means that we will have to keep all the rubbish from
a whole day and sort it into categories, for example:
Plastics
Paper
Cardboard etc
They will also suggest ways we can improve some of
our environmental practises. We understand that
some of the lecturers maybe Refugees. Class 3/4
will be working with the lecturers and then
educating the rest of the school.
Coming Events…….. Crunch & Sip
As part of our Live Life Well program we will be
encouraging the children to bring in a small piece of
fresh fruit or vegetable (eg carrot sticks) to eat in
the morning at 10am in the class room. This is to be
fresh fruit or vegetables only – no other food can
be eaten at this time. The children will only be
given a 5 minute timeframe to eat this fruit so
small portions would be preferable.
Unexpected Magic 2013
Our planning is now well underway for our end of
year production of Unexpected Magic. It will be
held on the afternoon of Saturday 30th November
in the school grounds. A back-up date of Saturday
14th December has also been set.
This year the show is having a “Fairground Theme”.
There will be whole school items including
Indigenous Dances, a Flash Mob and a whole school
musical piece. As well there will be opportunities
for individual and group performances featuring
music, visual art, drama, dance and movement.
All aspects of the show are part of our curriculum
so all students will be involved. Some classes have
been selected to develop specific parts of the show.
These classes are being asked to complete surveys
to assist with the planning of the final production.
For example our Year 5/6 class are working on
technology projects and visual arts for the show.
Year 3/4 are also creating visual arts projects. 1/2
and Year 2 are developing their dancing skills for a
special part in the show. As well the whole school
are developing the whole school items such as
dance, singing and music items.
For those students who wish to be part of the
‘Fairground Acts’ which will be small group or
individual items training is scheduled to commence
on Sunday 15th September. Training will be held
each Sunday afternoon up until the show. The

reason this is a Sunday is because our parent
volunteers who are training this section are
available only at this time. Names will be taken
shortly for students who wish to commit to this
section of our performance.
We are all looking forward to the wonderful
learning that will take place and I thank the many
parents that are willingly assisting our students to
develop their performance skills. Please be sure to
mark this date down on your calendars as I am sure
it will be another marvellous afternoon/evening at
Coledale PS.
To assist with the cost of producing a show like this
a number of parents are making marmalade from
local produce. They are seeking donations of clean
glass jars and lids. Please start gathering these and
sending them along to the school.
If other parents wish to help please let Jane in the
office know. As the date gets closer I am sure
there will be many little jobs that will need doing
such as assistance with costuming, backdrops,
promotion, ticket sales etc. so please feel free to
volunteer your services. Many hands make light
work is our motto!
Premier Reading Challenge
Students taking part in the challenge must have
finished reading and entered all their books into
the challenge website by 23rd August.
Children in Kindergarten to Year 2 complete the
challenge in their classrooms and have their details
entered onto the website by their class teachers.
AASC Touch Day – Thursday 22nd August
The kids have been training hard this week in the
lead up to next Thursday’s Gala Day at Dolton Park,
Fairy Meadow. Children will need to wear their
sports uniform and joggers, bring their lunch and
plenty of water to stay hydrated while playing. We
will be leaving school at 9:15 and return at home
time.
We are all looking forward to a great day of fun and
action. We hope the children enjoy the experience.
Drainage of our oval
As most of you are aware we have some major
drainage issues on our soccer field. If anyone has
any experience in how to rectify this problem
please contact Mrs Potter.
iPads are coming!
This week we will be ordering 10 iPads for the
school. These iPads will include cover, screen
protector and stylus. It is expected that these
iPads will be up and running towards the end of
term.
Thank you to the many families that made voluntary
contributions to make this possible.
Literacy and Numeracy Week
A huge thank you to the families who purchased
books from the Book Fair. From the sales we were
able to purchase $448 worth of books for our
library. We have also just spent $1,000 on new
library books from the commission of Book Club.
Children should keep an eye out for these new
books appearing on the shelves for them to borrow.
Book Week will be celebrated during Week 7, in
Literacy & Numeracy Week. The children will be
participating in a variety of literacy and numeracy
activities.
