CAMP LINCOLN FOR BOYS CAMP LAKE HUBERT FOR GIRLS
The Summer of 2013 has come to a close, and autumn is fully upon us. The squirrels, deer, and other wildlife have seemingly taken over the grounds, and the leaves are quickly changing and covering the fields at camp. Marty and his staff crew are closing up the final pieces of camp, and are repairing as much as they can before the cold and snow set in for the long winter ahead. Here in the Winter Office, we are reminiscing about all of the fun, friends, and,
of course, PG and D that we experienced this summer. Too, we are already planning ways to “shake it up” for this coming summer. Please be on the lookout this winter as we announce new and exciting updates for the camps, including a possible cozy, new home for the chickens at CLH!We hope that you are also reminiscing about camp, as well as thinking about next summer’s adventures. It would appear many of you are! Take a look inside for a list of all the campers that have already signed up for Summer 2014. If you see a friend on the list and wish to know which session they are in, email or call us in the office and we will be glad to help answer your questions. Is your name on the list? Awesome! We are excited to see you return next summer. If it is not on the list, what are you waiting for?! Now is a great time to register for Summer 2014, our 105th Season! Enjoy reading your Fall Railsplitter, and please remember to keep in touch with us and all of your camp friends this winter!

CAMP LINCOLNLINCOLN-LAKEHUBERT.COM800.242.1909
How can I explain an experience that has made such a significant impact on my life? I have been coming to Camp Lincoln for five years and still wish I could come again. Camp Lincoln is not just a summer camp, it is an environment where you can completely let go and be yourself. At camp, everyone learns something new, whether it be something about themselves, or an activity or sport that they try for the very first time.
This summer at Camp Lincoln was, by far, my best. Over the past five years, I have made friends that are unlike any others I have at home, and this year, I was lucky enough to have most of them in my cabin again. Our bonds were strong and I could go to any of them if I needed anything. Another great part about the summer was the Five-Day Boundary Waters Canoe Trip. I went with six of my closest friends and there was never a dull moment. From portaging to paddling, hiking to swatting mosquitos, everything was perfect. When I came back from our
trip, I was selected out of sixty senior division campers to be the Red Team Captain for Color Wars, along with my good friend, Jack Sant for the Blue Team. At Camp Lincoln, Color Wars is one of the best traditions camp has to offer. The entire camp is split into two colors: Red (symbolizing fire, passion, and sensitivity) and Blue (symbolizing tranquility, life, and power). Over the course of two days, the two teams compete in a series of activities and challenges. The winner is determined from a final relay race. Every camp activity and challenge is compiled into a two-hour relay. At the end of the race, the two captains are stationed in the
middle of camp. They have to build a fire that burns through a suspended rope to win Color Wars for their team. When my rope snapped first, I ran to my team as we all celebrated our win. Both my team and Jack’s competed the best way possible, we played hard and fair, one of Camp Lincoln’s main ideals.
My experience at Lincoln this year and every year has been truly wonderful. It is a significant part of my life and has helped shape me into who I am today. When I knew it was my last year at camp as a traditional camper, I wanted to make the best of it and spend as much time with my friends as possible. Coming home, I still keep in contact with them and have even joined my high school’s sailing team from the skills I learned on Lake Hubert. I highly recommend Camp Lincoln to anyone, it is an experience of a lifetime!
MANY thanks to each of the talented and devoted Camp Lake Hubert LTs of 2013! Each LT worked
throughout the summer help to make Camp Lake Hubert a special place for us all. They planned and
coordinated our special days, taught extensively in activities all over camp, and even volunteered
their talents to Camp Friendship Ventures for two days to help create a meaningful camp experience
for people with disabilities. Each of these enthusiastic, young women, mentored by the outstanding
leadership of Lucy Heinrich (Leadership Training Director) and Julie Jursik (Leadership Training
Head Counselor), accomplished extremely noticeable feats. Congratulations to these future leaders
of the new generation!

Camp Lake Hubert Staff Reflection
Camp is great because you do things you never knew you could do. I never could do archery before camp. Now I have my own bow and arrows and can shoot great. You also meet new friends. I met most of my new friends in my cabin this year, but I also met friends during activities. I look forward to camp all summer because it is one of my favorite places to go and I feel free. The freedom I feel comes when I am away from my parents. I miss them, but it is great to try things on my own without their help every step of the way. I hope all the new campers can share my experience at Camp Lake Hubert, the camp for girls.

As a Tripper at Camp Lake Hubert this summer, I
had the privilege of going on a Four-Day, Three-
Night Boundary Waters trip. While the weather
was less than ideal with cold temperatures and
three days of rain, the seven Nutcracker Girls
who participated in the trip helped make it a
memorable experience for all. After a fun filled
drive up to the outfitter in Ely Minnesota, we
loaded up our canoes and were then dropped
off at the portage site to begin canoeing on the
Kawishiwi River. Our initial 180 rod portage
tested the girls’ strength and endurance, and I
was very proud of how they handled this difficult
task of carrying both our gear and four canoes
quite a distance. We had a great canoe ride that
first day and found a campsite that ended up
being our home for the remainder of the trip.
We stayed put for days two and three due to
the weather, but still did plenty of activities
to remind us we were in a beautiful, natural
environment. What I took away from this
trip was that even in adverse conditions,
one can always find the positive side and
create their own good time. I owe my
fond memories of the boundary waters to
my co-trip leader, Aaryka Matte and the
seven campers who did not let a little
rain dampen our fun!

We are very proud to announce this past summer’s Chuck, Fred and Brownie Award Winners at Camp Lincoln. These very special awards are given to the 4 Week Campers in each session that the camp directors feel represent how they as directors want both the current and future campers to act and speak within the Lincoln Community.
Specifically, the Chuck Everett Award is given to the camper who is an active sportsman that epitomizes both excellence and Camp Creed Number 6, “I will play hard and fair.”
The Fred Rogers Award goes to the camper who embodies the Lincoln Camp Creed and enhances the lives of others at camp while making sacrifices in his own.
Finally, the Brownie Cote Award is given to the camper that lives out the 5 Core Values on a daily basis and is a role a model for the people all around camp. As with every year, there were many deserving young men for each of these prestigious awards. Congratulations to this year’s winners!

Camp Lincoln has been, and always will be, more than a camp to me. No words can describe
the place some call home for anywhere from 1-8 weeks during the summer. Describing
camp to peers is an impossible task. Camp is something that has to be experienced, before
you can fully understand the magnitude of qualities that it possesses. Every aspect from
Pioneer to Senior One Cabin makes camp, camp.
The best thing about camp is that everyone is in the same boat. At Camp Lincoln, there
are no set friend groups, no social statuses, and no labels. This produces an environment in
which everyone is looking for friends. Thus, making friends is easy and comfortable. This
summer at Lincoln was my last as a camper, but was my favorite summer. Although I had
old friends coming back, I still ended up making tons of new friends that varied in age.
Each time I go back to Camp Lincoln, I grow as a person individually and socially. Camp
pushes me to strive for excellence whether it is by helping younger kids or going for awards
in the activities. I will forever and always remember my great summers as a camper at
Camp Lincoln. The memories and stories I have at camp are special and lead me to come
back again and again. My many great summers at Camp Lincoln will always be with me.
Congratulations to the eighteen young men that were accepted to and successfully
graduated from Lincoln’s 2013 Level 1 and Level 2 Leadership Training (LT)
Programs. Led by Chris Dempsey, Nick Dunn and André Brewer, the LT 1s
and 2s were challenged to surpass the already high standards expected of them
while also working alongside their fellow campers and staff members both
inside and outside of the cabin. As graduates, they are now better at effectively
communicating to various audiences, are more well-rounded in camp activities
and are dedicated to building on their successes this summer back in their home
communities. We are quite appreciative of the significant amounts of energy,
focus and time that each of you put in to completing the LT Program and wish
you nothing but the best going forward.

My six weeks at Camp Lincoln this past summer were the most challenging and rewarding of my entire life. At the start of the Leadership Training Program, I was shy and would choose to remain behind-the-curtain whenever possible. During my time as a LT 2, I was constantly challenged to become a more vocal and outgoing leader. Whether I was interacting with campers, writing journals, or experiencing the administrative aspects of camp, I was proactively learning leadership skills that I will benefit from for years to come. Before camp, I spent much of my time, at school and in sports, quietly and independently developing my own knowledge and ability. Camp has given me the skills and confidence to become a leader. I now have a greater appreciation for the value of collaboration and the capability to effectively lead whether in the classroom, clubs, athletics, or any other group. Camp Lincoln also let me realize my potential to have a positive impact. Working with campers and helping them develop both activity and life skills showed me the payoff of hard work.
This past summer was profoundly fulfilling and amazingly impactful. Camp Lincoln has given me lifelong friends and memories, and shaped who I am. The Core Values of camp: Community, Excellence, Fun, Personal Growth and Development, and Quality Relationships have been instilled in me and serve as a guide for my life outside of Camp. This past summer, I gained the skills and confidence to achieve success whether I am studying for biology, running cross country, or interviewing with a college admissions officer.

Each summer at camp, I learn to be more
independent and organized. For five
summers, I have taken a plane with my
younger sister from Mexico to Minnesota.
I am better organized because, at camp, I
do not have my mom telling me to clean up
my bedroom or to pick up my dirty clothes
from the floor; and at camp, I have to do
it on my own. This helps me to be a better
person at home because now I’m more
organized with my stuff and time. For
example my locker at school is just like my
cubby at camp. Because, at school, if I’m
not organized, I would not be able to get
my stuff and I would be late for my next
class. At camp, if I do not have an organized
cubby, I cannot get the clothes I need, and
I would maybe lose some of my clothes. That
is how camp this summer helped me to be
a better person at home.
