Annual Lincoln-Cushing Camp’s Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington Cemetery honors the Boys in Blue

On this early summer evening, Lincoln-Cushing Camp No. 2 again hosted the annual Memorial Day ceremony at Arling-ton National Cemetery. This is the 147th year that the ceremony has taken place at the Tanner Amphitheatre and the Tomb of the Civil War Unknowns on the date originally set aside by General John A. Logan to honor all those who sacrificed their mortality to save the Union. The ceremony was derived from the 1893 ceremony performed by Grand Army of the Republic Farragut Post, No. 10 and Sons of Veterans Cushing Camp, No. 30, the predecessor of the Lincoln-Cushing Camp.

As in prior years, we were joined by the leadership of the Al-lied Orders to honor the men who bravely fought to preserve the Union. Camp Senior Vice Commander John Higgins, serving as Master of Ceremonies, introduced the distinguished guests on the reviewing platform. Other honored guests included Mr. William Brown, President of the Association of Oldest Inhabitants of the District of Columbia and Catherine Ball, State President DC Society, United States Daugh-ters of 1812.

The ceremony began with welcoming remarks from Memorial Day Coordinator Richard Griffin, PCC. The Gettysburg Blues Color Guard performed the duty of Posting of the Colors before the National Anthem was played by the U.S. Army Brass Band Quintet and Drummer. Camp Commander Brin Lewis then gave the “Commander’s Remarks,” followed by the US Army Brass Quintet playing Hail Columbia, Happy Land. Lincoln-Cushing Camp No. 2 mourns the loss of Brother Wilson Monk and Francis Higgins

Brother Wilson Monk

On June 28 Brother Wilson Monk passed away at his home in Washington, DC. Brother Monk had just joined Lincoln-Cushing earlier this year and scheduled to be

inducted at the September camp meeting.

Brother Monk, or just plan “Monk” as he was known, loved history and jazz. He sat on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Southeast, Washington, DC and

mentored young people in the city. For 10 years he hosted a jazz radio program on WPFW and was referred to as the ”Rhythmic Warrior.”

A ceremony for Brother Monk was held at the American Legion, Post 8 where

Commander Brin Lewis presented his SUVCW certificate and badge to his widow

Francis Higgins

Francis Higgins, the wife of SVC and camp Chaplain John Higgins, recently passed away. We express our sincere condolences to Brother Higgins and his family. Francis was a

beautiful person who was a treasured part of Lincoln-Cushing Camp.

Joel Johnson

It is sad news that Brother Ricardo Johnson lost his nephew, Joel Johnson, Jr., as a result of senseless violence. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Johnson family as well.

AFJROTC Cadet receives the SUVCW ROTC Recognition Award On 19 May, L-C Commander Brin Lewis presented AFROTC Cadet Kimberley Guidel with SUVCW ROTC Recogni-tion Award at the VA-821 AFROTC Cadet Group award night. The award recognizes her for exemplary patriotism and for demonstrating a high degree of academic performance and leadership. “It’s a great honor to salute Cadet Guidel for her out-standing achievements as she prepares to serve her country in the military,” commented Commander Lewis. Lincoln-Cushing Camp issues the award annually at the Arlington Career Center in Arlington, Virginia.

Sarah Eiland is recipient of 2015 Lincoln-Cushing CDR. William B. Cushing Scholarship Sarah Eiland is a member of her high school’s Model United National Club, the Key Club (a community service group), the Hi Q academic competition team, and the Junior Historical Society. She is also a mem-ber of the swim team and served last year as a junior class representative on the Student Government Association. Sarah is also involved in a local youth leadership program: Youth Leadership Mobile, and helped raise over $10,000 to purchase picnic tables for her school.

Sarah has grown up surrounded by Civil War landmarks and enthralled by her father’s ex-tensive knowledge of the war. She’s eager to use her time at the conference to meet other young people who are equally inter-ested in history and to begin to solidify her thoughts about what she wants to study in college.

As she wrote in her application essay, “I spent a night at Fort Gaines a few years ago. Late at night, with no elec-tricity or modern technology it was easy to imagine how it might have felt for the soldiers there. On both sides of my family, I have relatives who fought in the war. It just always has been a part of my life and history that I want to learn more about.”

Brother Ben Hawley spreads Civil War knowledge to Smarts Mill Middle School students Brother Ben Hawley, DSVC, addressed the 6th grade class of Smarts Middle School in Leesburg, VA during their June Civil War Day at Oatlands Plantation. Brother Hawley instructed the students about drilling and the war from the black soldier’s perspective.

Students and teachers seemed to benefit from the experience with one telling Brother Hawley “I didn’t know there were over 200,000 black participants in the Civil War.” After a rewarding day with the students, Brother Hawley stated “I think it is important to share the history of the black soldier with public. We have accepted this as our challenge.”

Congratulations to Brother Hawley for bringing this important part of our his-tory alive for these students. Providing speakers to area schools is one the primary objectives for Lincoln-Cushing Camp in 2015-2016. Thanks to Brother Hawley we’re off to a good start, even before the new school year begins.
