The organic, the metallic and the crystalline: Nature’s own characteristics are exerting their influence on home decor this season, from rock quartz chandeliers and crystal wall art to shimmering, abstract-patterned rugs. We’ ll take one of each—on the rocks, please.

2. ZEPHYR SIDE TABLE Palecek, C498

The devil is in the details in the Zephyr Side Table from the Kirk Nix Collection. Wrapped in charcoal raffia matting with a cerused wood top and accented with brass trim, its particular geometry is what best reflects its mineral-inspired influence.

FINISHING TOUCHES Designer and styling guru Alison Palevsky shares her tips and tricks for styling any project.

lison Palevsky has worn an assortment of stylish hats during her two decades in the design industry: interior designer, gallery-showroom owner, furniture designer. One of this Los Angeles–based Renaissance woman’s

greatest talents is styling — pinpointing the perfect details to complement and complete a room’s design personality. Below, we asked Palevsky to dream up a room using products found at Market.

FAVORITE STYLING RESOURCES?I love Hermès throws, black-and-white vintage photography, fresh-cut flowers (all the same kind of flower) in an old vase, and antique trunks. Books, books and more books, both new and old.

HOW DO YOU BEGIN STYLING A ROOM? I usually pick the most important piece in the room first and shape all the other pieces around it. I call it the “star” of the room. All the other pieces are great backup singers. The focal point of the room should be a conversation-starter and can help begin the story of the room when a guest asks about its origin. In this case, it was the console, because it felt quintessentially midcentury. At first glance, it seems simple, but when you look at the details, they are there in all the right places. Everything else had to work with and around it.

TELL US ABOUT THIS ROOM.This room draws inspiration from the idyllic 1950s but incorporates modern pieces (i.e., the dining table) to make it feel current to today’s lifestyle. The console is made with rich wood, as is the dining chair. The rush seat and back of the dining chair is very typical of the midcentury period, which reinforces the general look of the room. The table is more playful and contemporary, adding some whimsy to the space that’s unexpected.

SHARE SOME FOOLPROOF STYLING TRICKS.Unusual accessories—some new, some old—that layer and age a room are the key to pulling it together. A space should feel like someone uses it and loves it. It should never feel like a decorator came in with a truckful of accessories. When I go in someone’s home, I like to look for clues about who they are, where they have been and are going. If someone has traveled the world, I expect to see the treasures from their travels or books they’ve loved—and, of course, artwork. If a room tells the story of you, it is almost always successful.

HOW DO YOU BLEND HIGH AND LOW?I recommend putting the money into lighting and rugs. You can always tell the difference between the high-end version and the low-end. Today, it’s much easier to find a great reproduction furniture piece versus an original Murano chandelier or real, antique Persian rug.

WHAT’S THE ROLE OF THE STYLIST? You have to use your accessories to add just the right amount of color and texture. The perfect throw or pillow can make an average sofa feel brilliant. And art is a major factor in any home. You don’t have to be wealthy to have an interesting collection.

We asked Palevsky to dream up a 1950s dining room design using products found at Las Vegas Market. Here, she reveals how she gets it

right, down to the last detail.

From his early days designing Madonna’s house to his 10-year run on the AD100 list, Las Vegas Market Design Icon 2017 winner Timothy Corrigan looks back at his legendary career and offers a glimpse at what’s ahead.

INTERIOR ICON

irst, Vladimir Kagan, Juan Montoya, Christopher Guy, Vicente Wolf, Roger Thomas—and now Paris- and Los Angeles–based designer Timothy Corrigan. Corrigan has joined the ranks of industry luminaries as the

winner of this year’s Las Vegas Market Design Icon Award. Now in its 11th year, the award casts a spotlight on interior designers who have made major contributions to the industry throughout their careers. Corrigan, one of just nine designers who have earned a spot on the AD100 every year since 2007, sat down for a few rapid-fire questions on his career highlights… and tells us what’s up next (hint: collections, collections, collections!). WHAT WAS YOUR BIG BREAK?One of my early design projects was working for Madonna on a 1920s Mediterranean-style house in Beverly Hills. It taught me how to handle even the most unusual of client requests and expectations. MAJOR MILESTONES IN YOUR DESIGN CAREER?I still pinch myself that I’ve been so fortunate in my career as an interior designer. I’ve loved speaking at design functions around the world. Developing my first licensed collection of fabrics, trims and furniture for Schumacher; rugs for Patterson Flynn Martin; and china for Royal Limoges. The publication of my first book, An Invitation to Château du Grand-Lucé, was especially rewarding. And being honored by Las Vegas Market with the Design Icon Award is a major milestone! BEST COMPLIMENT YOU’VE RECEIVED?Deborah Needleman, the former editor of T: The New York Times Magazine, wrote this about my design style: “Most principles of good design are truly universal, not size or income-dependent… Comfort doesn’t have to mean paper plates and sweatpants. It can be elegant, and something we can achieve no matter where we make our home.”

THREE FAVORITE PIECES IN YOUR HOME?A small silver and vermeil box with enamel and porcelain that was given by Empress Elisabeth of Austria to her niece, my great-great grandmother; an unfinished portrait by Carolus-Duran that hangs in my living room; and a pair of Wave Chairs that I designed for Schumacher—not only are they beautiful, but they are ergonomically designed and are the most comfortable chairs you’ll ever sit on! PERSONAL DESIGN HEROES? Jean-Charles Moreux and Carlos de Beistegui. Moreux was an amazing renaissance man—a designer, architect, furniture designer, interior designer and landscape architect. Beistegui was one of the great tastemakers and collectors of the 20th century. FAVORITE CLIENTS?That’s like asking a mother to choose a favorite child! I have been fortunate to have many wonderful clients, whether they are celebrities, royals, corporate leaders or stay-at-home moms. MOST EXCITING PART ABOUT WORKING IN DESIGN?We’re in an age in which people expect high-end products to be more complexly created and with greater design detail—frankly, just more special. We need to bring a level of customization that cannot simply be purchased from a website. I love the challenge that this presents. As a designer today, you need to be sourcing product from all over the world. WHAT’S NEXT?In addition to my new licensed collections for THG Paris and Samuel & Sons, I’m developing a broad collection of wallpaper patterns for Fromental and a furniture collection for Moissonnier, a French heritage company, its first introduction to the U.S. market. If time allows, I’m hoping to start working on a new book.

orget the blinding neon, the sketchy after-hours spots and the stripper poles. Las Vegas offers far more than what the

producers of The Hangover might have you believe. The heart and soul of the city and its environs are a treasure trove of jaw-dropping natural landscapes and divine architecture that are sure to inspire. Curious designers just need to know where to look. Editor at Large quizzed Roger Thomas, this town’s de facto mayor of design, for his take on the scene beyond the scene. The multiyear AD100 honoree, known for his work on the area’s most iconic hotels—Wynn, Encore, Bellagio—is also a native son: Though born in Salt Lake City, Thomas grew up in Las Vegas. (Fun fact: His father was the CEO of the Bank of Las Vegas.) The designer is well versed in the city’s design culture, its creative hotbeds and its most common misconceptions. What’s the biggest fallacy? That Vegas design “is based on glitz, glamour and usually quite fake,” says Thomas. “With some of the world’s greatest design minds participating

in Las Vegas over the past 10 years, the opposite is true! It is a unique opportunity to see some of the most innovative, theatrical and also tasteful design, created by some of the world’s most talented participants.” Who better than Thomas to escort designers through Las Vegas’s most inspiring spots? Here, he’s picked some of his favorite points of inspiration.

ROGER’S HIT LIST1. SEVEN MAGIC MOUNTAINSSeven Day-Glo boulders, the creation of Swiss-born NYC artist Ugo Rondinone, sit about 10 miles south of the intersection of St. Rose Parkway and Las Vegas Boulevard. The public art installation, which features totems measuring between 30 and 35 feet high, delivers a colorful counterpoint to the mountain range and desert landscape from which it rises. sevenmagicmountains.com

2. SYMPHONY PARKBuilt on a brownfield that was formerly home to a Union Pacific rail yard, Symphony Park’s 60-plus-acre site in downtown Las Vegas is now a veritable study in sustainability and the sole project in the state to be accepted into a national green neighborhood pilot program. Two of Thomas’s must-sees are the fantastical, Frank Gehry–designed Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health and the Smith Center for the Performing Arts, designed by David M. Schwarz Architects, Inc. and home to the Nevada Ballet Theatre and Las Vegas Philharmonic. symphonypark.com

3. VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARKWith its ancient trees, eroded sandstone and Native American petroglyphs dating back 3,000 years, Nevada’s oldest state park, Valley of Fire, which sits in the Mojave Desert about 60 miles north of Las Vegas, is rife with organic inspiration.parks.nv.gov/parks/valley-of-fire-state-park

4. HOOVER DAMHoover Dam, named by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the country’s Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders, is just 35 miles southeast of Las Vegas, at the Nevada–Arizona border. At 726 feet, it’s the tallest concrete dam in the western hemisphere, providing water and hydroelectric power to Nevada, Arizona and California. Insider’s tip: Come in the late afternoon and stay until after sunset to see this National Historic Landmark all lit up. It’s a sight that rivals the brightest lights on the Strip. usbr.gov/lc/hooverdam

5. THE RED ROCK LOOPFind Nevada’s signature sandstone cliffs, Mother Nature–designed rock sculptures and sprawling horizons just 20 minutes beyond the city along the Red Rock Loop, a scenic drive that winds through the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. A variety of hikes, climbs, bike rides and educational programs abound here too. redrockcanyonlv.org
