Beginning with the 2006 Legislative
Session, a small group of members of the House of Representatives with tribal affiliations began meeting once a month during session for lunch. Today, 18 members from seven tribes comprise the House Native American Caucus. The caucus still meets for lunch, but more than socialize they strategize over upcoming votes and energize their fellow members with discussions about issues vital to Oklahoma’s Indian Country. With the vast economic impact the tribes have on the state budget comes increased influence and visibility for these front-line warriors who champion the Native perspective within the capitol. Like Kelly Haney’s bronze statue atop the dome, they are the new Guardians.
< Newly-elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation Bill John Baker speaks to the Caucus last February.
