Chiefland, florida is a city located in levy County, is known as the “gem of the suwannee valley”. the city is approximately 2.5 hours north of tampa, and about an hour southwest of gaines-ville. this charming small town is home to about 3,000 resi-dents and is known for being a livable city and a great place for families to live.
this area of florida is known as the state’s “nature Coast” due to the abundance of natural beauty, parks, and recreational ac-tivities available. Manatee springs state Park is a short drive from Chiefland and is a major attraction for nature enthusiasts. the park boasts crystal-clear water from a spring flowing di-rectly from the suwannee river and offers a full slate of activi-ties. activities include camping, boating, swimming, and world-renowned manatee watching.
as growth in north florida increased during the last quarter of the twentieth century, Chiefland became a local center for shop-ping. a 202,000 square foot Walmart supercenter was opened in 1995, and increased traffic along us 19/98 support a variety of national fast food franchises plus Best Western and days inn motels. agriculture is still a major factor in the local economy, but there has been a big shift to a service economy. Progress energy florida is moving forward with its plan to build two nucle-ar power plants in southern levy County, costing between $5–7 billion, on the east side of u.s. highway 19, north of inglis.
