The Board of Directors has approved proposed changes to the CCAS Constitution and Bylaws, which will be voted on by those in attendance at the Annual Meeting:

CCAS ConstitutionARTICLEIII-MEMBERSHIPThemembershipofthisorganizationshallconsistofthefollowing:(1)dulyregionally accreditedCollege,Schools,andDivisionsofArtsandSciencesthatgrantthebaccalaureatedegreeand(2)suchinstitutionsororganizationsasmaysubsequentlybeadmittedunderprovisionsoftheBylaws.InstitutionalrepresentativesarethosewhohaveprimaryresponsibilityforoverseeingprogramsandcoursesintheArtsandSciences.

RATIONALE:Theissuehasbeenraisedastoeligibilityofinstitutionsthatmaybeaccreditedbyarecognizednationalbodybutnotbyaregionalaccreditingassociation.TheBoardofDirectorswishestoclarifythattheintentofthiswordingisthatmembersmustbefrominstitu-tionsthatareregionallyaccredited.

10.StandingCommitteeonGenderIssues.AmongitsfunctionsshallbetooverseeandsustaingenderequityinitiativesandtoensurethatgenderequitycontentisinfusedintoCCAS’profes-sional-developmentprograms.

RATIONALE:AspartofitscommitmentintheNationalScienceFoundationADVANCE-PAIDgrant(PromotionInstitutionalTransformationthroughaNationalDean’sOrganization),CCASagreedtoestablishastandingcommitteeongenderissues.Inadditiontothetasksoutlinedintheproposedamendment,thiscommitteewillberesponsibleforproposingpanelsfortheannualmeeting,orga-nizingtheGenderIssuesbreakfast,andattendingtoLGBTQissues.

Those attending the Annual Meeting in Montréal are eligible to cast ballots (one per institution). Ballots are due by 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 4.

New DeansFortydeansandassociatedeansgatheredinSt.LouisthisJulyfortheSeminarforNewDeans.Theseminarfacultyconsistedoftheseminardirector,Paula Lutz (MontanaStateUniv.)andfacilitatorsGersham Nelson (Univ.ofCentralMissouri),David Manderscheid (Univ.ofNebraska,Lincoln),andCarolyn Stefanco (AgnesScottCollege).FormerCCASpresidentP.GeoffreyFeiss(retired)sharedstoriesandadviceon“WhatProvostsExpectofDeans.”IsaacMowoe,Esq.,providedanoverviewoflegalissuesandcaselawthateverynewdeanshouldknow.

Alongwithprovidingseveralsuggestionsforhowtoimprovetheseminar,participantcommentsincluded,“OverallIfeelmoreconfidentandinformedandmoreinspiredtotakeonthejob!”and“Thecombinationofdiscussion,scenarios,details,andoutlineswasgreat!”

Department ChairsForty-twodepartmentchairsattendedthissummer’sthree-dayseminarfordepartmentchairs/headsinSt.Louisfortraininginsuchareasas“managingpeopleandconflict,”“recruitment,retention,anddevelopmentoffaculty,”and“workingwiththedean.”Timothy Johnston(Univ.ofNorthCarolinaatGreensboro)directedtheseminar,withTas-neem Khaleel(MontanaStateUniv.atBozeman)servingasco-director.Experiencedchair-facilitatorsfromRiderUniv.(Jonathan Millen), Univ.ofNorthCarolinaatGreensboro,TheCollegeofWilliam&Mary,andArkansasStateUniv.ledbreakoutsessions.Inthepost-conferenceevaluation,oneattendeewrotethathe/she“hadbeenshownthepaththroughthewoods.”

Bothseminarsincludedtheunderlyingthemeofhowim-plicitbiascanaffectadministrativedecision-makinginanynumberofways.SeveralcasestudieswrittenbyDeanDe-nise Battles(Univ.ofNorthernColorado),PIfortheCCASADVANCE-PAIDgrant,promptedlivelydiscussionsamongparticipants.
