The Brown Bear, also known as the grizzly and kodiak bear, is one of the most endangered animals in the world. These bears are endangered because they are hunted by poachers for their fur, and because their homes are cut down by humans. In the 1900s there were about 100,000 in the U.S. By the 1970s, the population decreased to about 1000.The U.S government has established protected areas for these species including the brown bear such as Yellowstone National Park.

Where it lives
● The American Black Bear is distributed throughout North America, from places like Canada to Mexico. In the United States they range to 40 states.
● They are restricted to places that are inhabited by humans.● In Canada, black bears still inhabit most of their historic range except for
the intensively farmed areas of the central plains. ● In Mexico, black bears were thought to
have inhabited the mountainous regions of the northern states but are now limited to a few remnant populations.
![Page 74: Endangered Animals of North America: Digital Zoo](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052509/55a602d51a28abc4498b482b/html5/thumbnails/74.jpg)
Endangerment
● The Black Bear is endangered because people cut down their forest’s.
● They run away, and have no place to go. It is estimated that there is only 600,000 Black Bears in North America.
● Six of the eight species of bears are endangered or vulnerable and their numbers are in decline. Bears are confronted with a wide variety of threats, including habitat loss, climate change, and hunting.
![Page 75: Endangered Animals of North America: Digital Zoo](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022052509/55a602d51a28abc4498b482b/html5/thumbnails/75.jpg)
